1985 Omni GLH on Craigslist
By Brian Lohnes
BangShift.com
The 1985 Dodge Omni GLH Turbo was a neat little car that managed to trade blows with the European offerings of the day and with a little work, could shame the overweight and underpowered pony cars of the mid-’80s.
The GLH could be had in turbo and non-turbo versions. This one is a rarer turbo model and came equipped with a 146hp 2.2L four banger. It made 170 ft/lbs of torque at 3,600 RPM and was matched with a five-speed transmission. 6,500 of the cars were made, and it is not known how many were turbocharged and how many were naturally aspirated.
This particular car appears to be in decent shape with respect to the body but the motor is ill and needs to be pulled apart due to a lack of compression. Sounds like a perfect excuse to build an anvil of an engine and hit the drags.

Well it could outrun them because Camaros had 305s which is the worst Gm engine ever built and only put out about 180Hp and Mustangs just blow.

That Omni didn’t just outrun the emerging “performance Mustangs”, but it even outran the original GT350. Of course, there was 20 yrs of tech between the two, but either way, Carrol always finds a way to out do himself.

How could that little 4,000lb 4 banger @ 145HP actually outrun an 80′s IROC-Z or V6 midgetstang?

This may be the only Shelby most of us will ever be able to afford, but it’s still a Shelby and I love it. Being the owner of the later produced Shelby/Lotus influenced Spirit R/T, I can vouch that these cars are no joke, and contrary to popular belief, it was Dodge, not Honda that opened up the sport compact market, and the GLH was just the first of many Hi-Po turbo 4-bangers. And, even better, they’re so easy to modify. These cars love boost like you wouldn’t believe.
