T buckets a Plenty at Motorex 2009

By Ron Honig

WaytooFurious

The hot rodding scene is like any other car scene, where various trends seem to come and go out of fashion at regular intervals. The one thing that struck me at the Meguiar’s show on Saturday was the number of T buckets on display. I might be mistaken but it looks like interest in T buckets is taking off again. More pics after the jump.

Wheeler Dealers Tackle a Jaguar XJS

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

Before I started doing admin for StreetFire, I’d never watched Wheeler Dealers, where two blokes take an old classic, spruce it up, and try to turn a profit. While I’m not the kind of dude that wants to flip cars for money, I do like how they go through every acquisition to fix mechanical and cosmetic problems on the cheap. It’s basically what you do when you bring home a new ride, and getting to watch these guys do it with cool old iron is just fun. This segment deals with Jag’s XJS—a car I totally want to do the 350 conversion on—but Ultra86 has posted a a bunch of others. Head over to StreetFire to check out shows dealing with the Audi Quattro, VW Beetle and Triumph Spitfire.

LeMons New England: Spinning Our Way to a 22nd Place First Day Finish!

By Jim Brennan

UDMan

Well, it was an adventure, entering the oldest car yet to compete in any 24 Hours of LeMons event. What was even more amazing was the fact that this 46 year old car, which was sitting in a Vermont Field for over a decade, was one of the most reliable machines on the track. When the race ended on Sunday, our team circled that Stafford Motor Speedway 813 times, placing 23rd overall, with the best lap time of 36.602 seconds, compared to the overall winner (The Kielbasa Kids Honda Civic) who’s best lap time was 31.011 seconds.

Volt Integration Continues at Hamtramck

By Katherine Helmetag

Atomicalex

I just heard from inside of the plant that things are going well. Sheet metal is ready to install and the holders that carry the cars on the conveyor have been delivered. This is all ahead of schedule, so the conveyor guys are working hard to get ahead of schedule, too. It looks like an on-time launch is not only in the works, but that we may see cars rolling off the line early. This is good news for GM, which is also re-tooling Lordstown for the Cruze. I hear that that is going well, too.

Robbie Maddison Back Flips London's Tower Bridge

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

If you’ve ever been stuck at a drawbridge—like the super-irritating one right in front of CarDomain HQ—you’ve thought about jumping across. But it takes a bad-ass individual to actually give it a go, and Robbie Maddison is just that type of individual. London’s iconic London Bridge is obviously a sweet target for such a stunt, and while the gap here isn’t all that wide, the combination of back flip, burly incline and heavy railing presence make this maneuver look pretty sketch. Yikes.

Caption Contest: This Week's Winner!

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

First off, we’re sorry about how the comments system got all wacky about assigning people their member ID this week. In case you were unaware, computers sometimes screw things up. Fortunately, I didn’t have to try and determine a winner based on those weird number signatures, because __nes__ nailed this shot with the very first comment. Now, I’m not saying there weren’t a bunch of good entries, but “So after I get the stitches removed, is there going to be a big scar?” totally killed it. Congrats, man! Tune in tomorrow for the next installment of our fire-roasted Caption Contest!

Big Block Thursdays Tonight on Speed

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

It might be kind of hip to hate TV, and there tons of people who’ll tell you that the only reason they have cable is because it’s super cheap when bundled with internet. They are lying. Personally, I love television, and since I also love cars, I wind up watching a lot of Speed. Anyway, tonight they’re kicking off Big Block Thursdays, where Pinks All Out, Jacked and Wrecked will run back-to-back. I haven’t actually seen Jacked, but I like the idea of tracking down stolen rides Cops-style, so I imagine it’ll be pretty cool. And since I’m already a fan of Pinks and Wrecked, Big Block Thursdays should prove pretty entertaining. While this would make perfect “hangover TV”—think Saturday mornings at 10—everything starts tonight with Pinks at 8PM. If you’re home, check it out.

Home Brewed Enginuity

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

eah, we know it’s really spelled “ingenuity,” but here at BangShift.com we are coining a new phrase. Enginuity refers to the creative utilization of automotive parts in the pursuit of fun. Examples: Nitrous on your lawn mower, home built car-engine powered go karts, Chevette jumping, etc. We list all of these examples, because they are things we saw while perusing StreetFire and YouTube in search of a video for this week. We found too many cool ones to list, but the examples we have below will make you laugh, and want to get your friends and some spare parts together. My suggestion would be to start with some sort of list of available parts, and then start hitting the pizza and beer. After the scheming, you’re going to need some steel, a welder, and the Ford tool. (That’s a hammer for you “other make” guys.) Check out these two below, and then post links to your favorite examples of “Enginuity” in the BangShift.com Forums.

Stealth Bomber

Car Culture At Large

Would you be willing to part with your car and send it to a shop on the other side of the world? The story gets even better, because the owner of this R34 had never even met the car builder, he only knew him by reputation…. but after some phone conversations, a deal was struck and this R34 was to be shipped across the planet for some very special modifications.

The British owner imported the car back in 2003 from Japan and had it shipped to the UK. After some exterior modifications, he wanted to do something special to the engine and checked around in the UK Skyline tuning scene, but didn’t find what he was looking for. So he got in contact with Rob from New Zealand outfit R.I.P.S; known internationally as one of the best Skyline engine builders going. Continue reading at Speedhunters
