HMX Rear Suspension Rebuild Begins

By Dan Strohl

Hemmings

As mentioned last time, my next big project on the HMX is eliminating that taildragger stance thanks to a rebuilt front suspension (with stiffer AMX springs) and an old, busted, saggybaggy rear suspension (with softer Spirit GT springs). So with a complete set of rear bushings in hand, along with new shocks and the Spirit AMX’s rear springs, I have my work cut out for me. Continue reading at Hemmings

DartAttak

By Ron Honig

WaytooFurious

There were a lot of cool cars at the Meguiar’s MotorEx show on Saturday. Being a Mopar fan I was immediately drawn to DartAttak. It’s not actually a Dart, but an Aussie Valiant which has been converted to look like a Dart. It has a 383 which has been stroked to 451 cubes and it weighs 3750LBS.  The thing that I really loved about this car is that it is street legal! When I saw it from a distance I assumed you would only ever see it on the track. More pics after the jump.

What's Next: Kinetic Energy Harnessing Speed Bumps at the Burger King Drive Thru

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

No, I’m not making this up. A Burger King in New Jersey plans to install kinetic energy harnessing speed bumps in their drive thru to help power appliances in the restaurant. The whole thing is pretty silly, and Tree Hugger had a field day with it:

Where do I start? With the carbon footprint of drive-in restaurants, to the idling while waiting for the burger, to the carbon footprint of raising meat and making hamburgers? The installation of this at a burger joint is laughable. The energy it will generate is negligible, and It probably will take twenty years to recover the energy in it’s manufacture.

But hey, if it makes you feel better about your burger, go for it. Drive toward that car ahead of you in the line but don’t put on your brakes; just aim for those little plates in the road and hope that they slow you down in time. Trust the technology.

Stupid Mutual Exclusivity Of The Day: Audi A8L Option Packages

By Sam Barer

Sound Classics

Back in the good old days of automobile purchase decisions, a buyer had a long list of options from which to choose. Seldom were any said options (aside from picking one engine over another) mutually exclusive.

When there was a case of mutual exclusivity, at least it made sense. I mean, c’mon, do you really need air conditioning with that selection of the high-compression solid-lifter race-spec L88 427-cubic inch engine on this ’67 Corvette you’re ordering, sir?

Vanity Plates at Meguiar's Motorex

By Ron Honig

WaytooFurious

One of the things that really surprised me about the show on Saturday was the number of vanity plates. Katherine would have been in vanity plate heaven. My favourite was Gidiup, on a Mustang of course. More pics after the jump. Sorry about the photos being fuzzy but my camera was playing up on the day.

Driver Ghost-Rides on Victory Lap, Fails

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

Winning a race promotes all kinds of pointless celebratory activities. And while wasting perfectly good champagne by spraying it off the podium is harmless enough, ghost-riding the winning whip is significantly riskier. This looks like a great way to piss off the crew who build you a winning car. Congrats on the win/fail, driver!

Half Million Dollar Mustang on eBay!

By Chris Borrelli

Chris Borrelli

“NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART OR SHORT ON FUNDS…”, was the very first line in the description, and pretty much says it all. A 1969 BOSS 429 Mustang listed oneBay at $505,000. The original owner is selling it with a little over 22,000 on the odometer. Is it too much, or maybe even too little of a price? See for yourself!

Hot Rod Mars Landers

By Fireball Tim

Movie Car Design Master

So, in the evenings before dinner, I like to check and update my Netflix. Jostle things around, delete, add, wonder why I picked certain things at all. And most of it is just lame. I must have been on drugs when I picked them. (Caffeine mostly…)

But sometimes I like to randomly snag movies that I never had a chance to see or even remember coming out. And this is one of them. A great IMAX film about 2 Hot Rod Landers (Spirit and Opportunity) that headed to Mars. Unbelievable CG work makes you wonder why anything in film should be bad) Created by Frank Marshall, the film depicts two of the most incredibly designed JPL Rovers that truly feature the strength of the human spirit.

Rally Crash: Why the Hell Would You Park There?

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

Even as someone who’s never been overly concerned about where I park my cars—motorcycles are a different story—the stupidity on display here is mind-bending. Seriously, who the hell thinks it’s a good idea to park their car on the edge of a rally course? Standing there is stupid enough, but at least you can count on your reflexes to give you a fighting chance if a driver looses it. It’s tough to tell exactly how many cars were damaged in the first crash, but it’s safe to say some major human carnage was avoided when a second driver plows into the mess. At one point, there are a dozen people in the road trying to move the crippled machine, and from what I can tell, they all got clear. The guy off to the right is one lucky dude…

Jet-X, The 1972 Plymouth GTX that Mopar Never Built

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

Here’s a car from the cover of the October 2009 Mopar Action magazine, and one that’s being debuted at Chryslers at Carlisle, July 10-12, just as this is being posted at BangShift.com. It’s Gary and Pam Beineke’s brand new creation, Jet-X. This is the 1972 Plymouth GTX that Chrysler never built, it has 440 Six Pack power, and if you are a serious Mopar fan, you’ll really respect both the story and execution behind this car.
