Pics from the Goodwood Festival of Speed

By Speedhunters

Car Culture At Large

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is not only about cars up the Hill or manufacturers’ stands trying to entice potential customers. In a most agreeable setting on the lawns of Goodwood House there is also the Cartier Style et Luxe Concours d’Elegance. There are a number of categories all vying for the vote of various celebrity judges plus the honour of ‘Best in Show’. Themes for this year included “Alfresco Exotica”, “Serious Wedge”, “100 Years of Bugatti”… Continue reading over at Speedhunters.

If you’re an old-motorcycle nut, you might know who Ernst Neumann-Neander (AKA N2) is. His beyond-innovative Neander bikes, with their box-section alloy frames and pivoting forks, were both gorgeous and fast.

N2 also experimented with three- and four-wheelers. Modern Mechanix readers may recall his carving three wheeler, featured last fall. After Neander bikes went out of business, he got interested in small, lightweight cars. Continue reading at Hemmings

Drag Cars at Meguiar's MotorEx 2009

By Ron Honig

WaytooFurious

I was absolutely blown away by the number of drag cars at Meguiar’s MotorEx on Saturday. The one that I really liked looked like it might have been a Suzuki Mighty Boy in a former life. I also liked the Lamborghini drag car, the story behind it is quite poignant. The gentleman that built the Lambo died early in life, so to keep his memory alive his father has maintained and kept the car running. More pics after the jump.

Auto Interiors 101: the Beginning

By Mike Musto

RideLust.com

Over the next few weeks I will be doing a recurring blog on a the art of redoing automobile interiors, as I think this is a subject that is rarely covered. As most of you know my Charger is my warhorse. It’s big, brash, in your face and performs better than most muscle cars that are still roaming the streets. I drive this car everywhere, to the track, the store and even sometimes an occasional trip across the country. This car has seen and done it all. But doing all this fun stuff tends to eventually take its toll, and for this reason some refurbishing is required.

Klamath Kruise

By David Belau

For a small town car show, there’s a lot of gems at this one. I’m highlighting a few of my favorites from this year’s show. The first is this 1934 Desoto Airflow owned by Butch and Cathy Steele out of Grants Pass, OR. When was the last time you saw an Airflow? This one is simply off the hook. It’s powered by a blown Hemi and it’s far from stock. In my opinion, this was best of show.

Robert S. McNamara and the Ford Falcon

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Robert S. McNamara, who died last week, was most famous for overseeing the buildup of U.S. forces in Vietnam as the Defense secretary under Kennedy and Johnson. But did you know he was also largely responsible for the Ford Falcon? Check out this article over at the New York Times

Good Night, Las Vegas! There Will Be No Encore

By John Naderi

StreetFire.net

Formula Drift Las Vegas is in the books. And here are a few random observations:

Las Vegas drift fans never seem to wait for the final results. Maybe because the event doesn’t end until midnight.

The fans may not care who won but there were more of them this year than last.

I’ve been a reporting on drifting in one form or another steadily since 2001 beginning in Japan and I still don’t understand the judging parameters.

It seems a V8 is the key ingredient to increasing entry speeds and tire smoke (duh!).

Chris Forsberg beat out Tyler McQuarrie for Third place and Tanner Foust beat Ryuji Miki in the finals.

We’ll have a complete video on StreetFire.net next week.

Formula Drift Vegas: Goin’ Big and Crappin’ Out

By John Naderi

StreetFire.net

Triple digit temps and a new course configuration lit up the drivers at the fourth round of the 2009 Formula Drift series at Las Vegas. So far this season has been a real wild child. The odds of two-time defending champion Tanner Foust three-peating are greater than getting Megan Fox to wash my car. Here in Vegas Rhys Millen could not even score high enough to qualify. Another shocking DNQ was current points leader Darren McNamara whose Saturn Sky expired it’s V8 engine during practice. In an effort to keep him in the points Falken unceremoniously unseated Calvin Wan from his S15 but DMac couldn’t put a solid qualifying run together. The Falken crew did manage to score a big win after they somehow managed to tape JR Gittin’s Mustang back together in quick fashion after he hit the wall hard in practice. JR rode the wrinkled Ford to a 19th qualifying spot. Take a jump with me to see more from Las Vegas.

Bullrun 2009 has Begun!

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

Last year, I covered the Bullrun, and I have to say its one of the coolest—and most intense—things I’ve ever done.  After I got home, I felt like I’d been hit on the head with a hammer, and it took me a solid week until I felt normal again. But damn, it was a blast. This morning, Kim Kardashian dropped the the green flag in NYC to start Bullrun 2009, and as soon as I start seeing videos hitting StreetFire, I’ll be posting them to the blog. Until then you can follow the rally via Twitter. Stay tuned.
