Bob Lutz is Stepping Up!

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

Back in February, Bob Lutz announced he would step down from his position as “Vice Chairman and Senior Advisor.” Given the dude is 77, and has a collection of wicked cars and a personal fighter plane to play with,  it was hard to fault him for his decision. But everyone around the office was stoked to learn that he’s changed his mind, and will continue to serve the General. Good to see you’re not going anywhere Bob—now go kick some ass! Kid Sits on Hood of SRT-8 Jeep During Burnout

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

So what’s a teenager to do when his parents leave the McMansion and head off to the links? Why not sit on the hood of the SRT-8 Jeep while the driver does burnouts? Of course! Now, I wouldn’t have posted this if I didn’t think it was funny, and it’s not like I didn’t do things just as juvenile or dangerous when I was a kid. But if my blogging this clip gets homeboy grounded, I wouldn’t be upset.

Italian Hertz Locations Renting the Elise and Exige

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

So is Hertz officially the coolest rental car company ever? It already rents Corvettes, and went as far as to have special edition Shelby GT-500 Mustangs produced specifically for its fleet. And now it’s Italian outposts are going to let people off the lot behind the wheel of an Elise or Exige? What? It’s like the company doesn’t understand what people do with rental cars. Obviously, it’d be cooler if these pocket rockets were going to be available stateside, but since either of these British roadsters would be welcome in my dream garage, I’ll forgive them. Read the fully press release after the jump. Hertz via Jalopnik.

Crash of the Week: Hilarious Four-Wheeler Mishap

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

One of the my daily tasks is to pick the videos for the StreetFire Shows—Drag of the Week, 4×4 Nation, Bikini Contest, etc—and on Thursdays we feature Crash of the Week. To be honest, selecting these videos is some of the easiest work I do, because all it entails is finding something that fits the bill and running with it. There’s also the satisfaction of knowing that I’m getting paid to watch car videos, which I find quite satisfying. Anyway, while I was going through the approval queue, I found this hilarious four-wheeler wreck, and while I laughed my ass off, I also came away impressed with the rider’s tenacity. From what I can tell, he was basically unhurt, and came away from this mishap with a great video to show his buddies. Watch this week’s pick below, and head over to the Crash of the Week page to check out some other awesome wrecks.

Caption Contest: This Week's Winner!

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

Way back in the day, I actually used to deliver mattresses and furniture, and it was easily the most physically demanding job I’ve had. Ever. Of course, I drove a truck that had enough space for ten or so stops, so I never had to resort to anything like this to secure my load. But even though I’ve heard variations on this joke, like, ten thousand times, it was kind of funny to hear it with the sexual connotation removed. So this week’s winner is leojmcca, who came up with; “I’m not sure if I like this mattress, let me take it for a test drive.” Congrats man. Tune in tomorrow for the next installment of our Caption Contest—the official sponsor of summer!

The End of Drifting or a New Beginning?

By John Naderi

StreetFire.net

This weekend I am stoked to brave the desert heat, stomach the $1.99 All You Can Eat Buffet and resist the temptations of the blackjack table and champagne room to watch those Formula Drifters tear up the tarmac of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. If we don’t have to pawn the cameras to cover the costs of our hedonistic delights we should have our coverage on StreetFire by early next week.

Are you down with drifting? If so, are you down with Ken Gushi’s tC? No doubt it’s an ill communicator with the Beams motor and RWD conversion, but is a car like this good or bad for drifting? As a drift fan I tend to prefer cars like Ross Petty’s S15 to say, Tanner’s tC. But that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate a Frankenstein’d build either. I’m torn, what do you think about this new crop of drift cars? I can’t worry about it now, I’m off to a Vegas strip club, er I mean, the Vegas strip, er the racetrack outside of Vegas. Focus, I need to focus.

What Big Movies Are Coming?

By Fireball Tim

Movie Car Design Master

Well, whatever they are, there better be some awesome cars in ‘em. Here’s a short list. And if I have anything to do with them, I’ll be laying the car SMACKDOWN. Oh, and since I AM doing some of them now that I think of it, expect serious automotive damage coolness.

IRON MAN 2, JUSTICE LEAGUE, GREEN HORNET, PITCH BLACK 3, Jackie Chan’s KUNG FU KID, MEN IN BLACK 3, GHOSTBUSTERS 3… shall I go on? Um, ok. James Cameron’s AVATAR, GREEN LANTERN, THE FLASH, Robert Rodriguez’s PREDATORS. Yea, all small budget movies. Cheapies, like Transformers.

When are they coming out? I’ll let you know, give you links to trailers and do the inside scoop thing. You can also check my personal blog. Subscribe there if you want to get all personal, yo. Also working on my own TV show, so you’ll get a chance to see me act like an idiot on TV, too. What’s THAT show? Ahh, that is a secret. But if you watched Monster Garage and Street Tuner Challenge, then you know that I’m in to causin’ trouble. (It was really all Jesse’s fault.) There’s also two shows coming at the end of this year on Discovery. “World’s Most Expensive Rides” and a special somethin’ or other.

But for now, check out this hot trailer from my buddy David Twohy. THE PERFECT GETAWAY.

A Sign From Above?

By Katherine Helmetag

Atomicalex

Just shoot me. I hopped into the Rabbit after my lunch errand yesterday and I heard a “plink” sound from the back end as I released the ebrake. Increased rolling resistance and a newly non-functioning ebrake cable meant I was not going anywhere fast. I babied the car home after work, and pulled the driver’s side rear spindle apart to find that the self-adjusting wedge on the drum brake mechanism had fallen and basically stuck the brakes on. Rear drums aren’t really that efficient, so it wasn’t a major crime to drive home on it, but what a pain in the butt. Now I either have to find a brake shoe to replace the fried one with, or finally get around to installing that rear disc conversion I started building last fall.
