This is the stupidest thing ever! Y target even the car industry!?!!?! Y don’t these tree huggers n government point the environment problems at other places like these chimneys rolling around everywhere that consume so much gas n pollute more then some factories…there called big rigs, & buses!! Tractors, & buses r not monitored, they need the cash for clunkers!! This is not at all going 2 help the economy. Jus think about all those people that drive these still useable cars that in there eyes are clunkers which there just old cars, what makes them think in the first place they could even afford the new cars? That’s y there driving old cars in the first place!! These same cars will be on used car lots a year from now cause they couldn’t afford it in the first place.Us putting up the money for a stupid ass program is insane!! That doesn’t create jobs, it adds 2 the snowball effect. Funny how they own part of a few car makers n this is what they come up with? By the way congress..smooth move on putting chemicals in the air by the dumbest way of “disposing” the engine. JASPER engine rebuilders you gotta help us out!!!

I’ve watched quite a few videos on Youtube and yeah, like some people here, I’m kinda mad. I’m Canadian and this doesn’t even have to do with Canada. But the things the chemical smoke would do to the atmosphere? I’m not saying Obama is stupid for coming up with this, but they definately should of thought of different ways of disposing engines. From not having oil in the engine and that glass liquid stuff, killing the engine & making the exhaust spew smoke, who knows what it’s doing to the environment. Half of the cars they put down for Cash for Clunkers are in almost showroom condition anyway, why should they be destroyed? This is absolutely terrible, along with the people that give up their cars to this fate. Unless they absolutely had to. If I’ve offended anyone, it wasn’t intentional, I was just kind of venting.

So,here’s my take on cash for clunkers and the whole green car hype.Well,what is the government going to do once they destroy all these vehicles?Nothing,that’s what.All they are doing is creating a bigger mess for the environment.Seizing these motors is just plane stupid.Where is all this stuff supposed to go?How about the auto corporations limit their production numbers and stop making more than they sell?Maybe that would be a little better for the companies.The reason people aren’t buying newer cars is because they can’t afford it,the economy is horrible right now.Obama has spent more on the budget instead of trying to repair it.Also,the whole green car hype is ridiculous.They aren’t any better for the environment.The batteries in the hybrids and electric cars are worse for the environment then the exhaust put out by a big block V8,the chemicals used in those batteries are far more harmful than gas fumes,and not to mention more expensive to manufacture.They also make more waste than most vehicles once you send one to the junkyard.Even worse,a lot of these places participating in the cash for clunkers program are doing this same thing to classic pre-75 auto’s which were supposed to be exempt from this program,many of those vehicle whose parts and motors could be sold to restore other old vehicles,therefore recirculating money in to the near dead auto industry.

cash for clunkers is the biggest crock of shit i have ever heard of. there is no way in hell that i would trade in my 80 toyota corolla for a new car. my car runs great gets 40mpgs. and it has pleanty of power. destroying cars that still run good needs to be a crime. obama need to go to hell. Isn’t it the consumer’s choice whether or not he/she has a gas guzzler? You might be sick of filling up your 12mpg V8 and want to get some 60mpg plastic car that runs on Caesar salads but someone else might not give a damn and will buy it off you.

It’s a bad idea and I personally don’t see ANYTHING good coming out of it and think there are much bigger fish to fry. It’s just another sign that America’s country and culture are steadily going down the drain…

that is sum bullshit. those auroras is sum nice cars. the only reason y that car didnt get good gas mileage is becuz tha bitches that owned it probably didnt take care of it. they probably didnt change tha oil, spark plugs, or air filter. probably drove tha car fast as hell all tha damn time 4 no reason. IF U DONT TAKE CARE OF UR CAR OF COURSE ITS GONNA GET BAD MILEAGE NO MATTER WUT YEAR IT IS. hell sum v8s get jus as good mileage or better than sum v6 engines or even 4 cylinders. tha number of cylinders dont dictate how good or bad a car gets in mileage. taking care of it does. wuts tha point of getting a car that gets say 25 miles to tha gallon when tha owner has no intention of taking care of tha new car, no matter tha number of cylinders. they couldve kept they “clunker” and sold it to sum one who will take care of it. i know that sum of these cars really r clunkers, they either have 2 many miles on it, actually do get really bad gas mileage or is beat up on tha outside and/or inside. plus i can see if u bought a used car thinking it got good mieage but has been a headache since u bought it. then i can see y u would trade it in. i seen some 1 get rid of a 94-96 chevy impala ss and tha car was in good condition. i know it was. i almost shitted on myself. this aurora seems 2 b one of those good cars thats gonna b destroyed 4 no reason. engine started and seemed to sound very good even wit that shit n it. sad. very sad.

Ok so I get the idea of making the world a better place but what happens when all the “Clnkers” are gone and some one who does’t have alot of money or good credit needs a car. I work for Ford and I have seen alot of people get turned down because of there credit. There is talk of getting all “old” cars off the road (so my 1984 GMC S-15)(or my 1998 Ford Escort) then what am I left with my 2005 Dodge Caravan (paid $9950.00)any car older than 1999 the want off the road so I lose my first Truck and my daily driver. I can’t replace them for the $300 they will give me for taking them off the road. This is stupid. I live in Canada, but the USA is THE LAND OF THE FREE well this is not so fee to keep your older vehicle.

Ok, i’m fine with the cash for clunkers IF it’s a car that probably wouldn’t live much longer anyway, like lets say an old 90’s V8 car that when it stops it gets surrounded by blue smoke, it runs shitty, it’s rusted out, it’s got say like 400,000km on it, then ya, i can understand it. But that Aurora seemed to still run fine, it’s body was still good, that was a nice car. If people want to help the enviroment, go ahead, just don’t put our cars in the line of fire. A lot of people here say V8s pollute the most and get terrible gas mileage, a lot of modern V8s get better gas mileage than my 4 cylinder cavalier. Though i could care less about what my vehicles emissions are, if i didn’t buy it and drive it, trust me, someone else would, 4 cylinders are weak, slow, and more-or-less useless except for a basic commute. Personally i would much rather have something like a Grand Cherokee 4×4 V8, gets about 17-18mpg hwy.

get some info on the bill before talking s*it about it. the car you get has to achieve 10mpg combined more than the one you trade in to get the full 4500. all in all though, mileage depends on your foot more than anything. and for all those saying that this car was soooo nice, auroras are alright but fwd V8s are useless automobiles. thats why cadillac is almost done with them and gm is getting ready to as well.

Yeah for that 2 minutes that it pollutes the air is nothing compared on a yearly basis. V8’s pollute about 28 pounds per gallon. They usually have 18-24 gallon tanks. Thats about 504-672 pounds per tank. Im sure if its a daily driver they fill about 4-6 times a month, thats 2,016 pounds per month. 12 months in a year, 24,194+ pounds per year. Cars usually pollute half of that per year. Think about all these “clunkers” that are not usually kept up in maintenance because of the owner that pollutes more CO2 than an average year.

Big whoop! They are destroying a car that has a Kelly Blue Book value of $1000 (I looked it up) BUT INSTEAD IT’S PREVIOUS OWNER GOT $3500-4500. Be happy for them. If you hate cash for clunkers so much, go to the dealers yourself and offer to match the trade in price… OH, not willing to go that far huh… so quit complaining. No one is forcing anyone to trade in their car, nobody is trading in classic or antique cars worth millions, etc. It’s helping the environment getting these oil leaking, smoking, BADLY NEGLECTED cars off the roads. I work at a Ford dealer, trust me, nothing spectacular has come in on this program.

As for those of you who THINK that engine and other parts is so great and should be saved… let’s think rationally for a change and think about what a junkyard does with it’s cars. The car sits there for years, decades even, leaking all it’s fluids into the soil. But we don’t care about safe drinking water! 75% of junk cars sit there in the salvage yard and just rust away. Take a trip to one. Look around on the net for cars in barns, etc and see the old Junk yards no longer in business, but the cars still sit there in a field or the woods, what do you think is going on with those cars? If the engine is sold, it is put into another car AS IS, most people DO NOT rebuild it to like new again, so that would defeat the purpose. This way, the whole car is recycled into products we can use again. AS for the “AWFUL SMOKE” coming from running the engine until it locks up (3-5 minutes top) I suppose the thick smoke they normally pump out daily for endless hours while driving down the road is a good thing?

So yes, I love the cash for clunkers idea. I think it is a good idea. I actually think it should be expanded to include more vehicles, especially older ones. I don’t hate older cars, in fact. I wish I had money to restore a few muscle cars, but I don’t. I am just environmentally responsible. I see nothing wrong with people getting a lot more than their old car is worth and recycling it.

I work at at dealership, and it kills me to see the clunker cars being traded in.Most of the cars are under 100xxx miles and any car guy knows thats not bad miles for an older car. Half of the car are nicer and newer than what employees at the dealership drive to work everyday. I’v been trying to afford parts to build a 355 vortec for my 86 monte, and had to watch 96 chevy 1500, and a 00′ chevy 1500 with an 5.3 ls1 be destroyed. I voted for obama, and as a black man, it hurts me to say this but he fucked up on this one.

You all should know they are performing the same procedure on cars coming into junk yards. The cops are enforcing a “no junk cars” law, meaning: Any car on your property that your neighbors complain about is considered junk, and you have one week to fix it or it will be hauled away at the owners expense.

Once they finish with the ‘clunkers’, they will come after everything else.

Im not to sure what way to go one this. I can if you do have a really old car that just isnt worth having. Then yeah i say get your self a new car. But if its something that still runs good and you dont mind paying for the gas its uses then i dont see why you would want to trade it in. I have an 07 CTS that i plan on keeping untill it runs into the ground. As long as i keep it up and running it will last me at lest 10 – 20 years i hope. Never trade it in.

Im a salesmen for a local Dodge dealer here in utah. I think this Cash for clunker program, although is really helping my industry right now will do more damage in the long long run. One its not forcing but highly encourageing people who are not in the market to buy new cars when they may not be able to realy afford it. Second it takes cheaper in some cases well running cars off the market again forcing people to spend more on cars then what they can really afford. Its sad to see some of these cars crushed.

I have to partially agree with 90xjpunk.
While some of the cars being sacked are collector- or tuner-worthy, many are not.
Since they are coming from 1984-up, many of them are from a sporty-look, demasculated-performance era. (no General Lee Chargers or Mustang Bosses here) They are also under 18mpg (no one said whether they meant city or highway mpg.), which probably will take out a number of performance sports cars (I pity the fool who brings in an IROC-Z Camaro or 1983-89 350 Formula Trans Am), but are mostly expected to weed out a few big trucks and sport utilities, some which were already villified before the economic or fuel crises that spawned this bill. (My best friend’s 1992 Probe LX — which he wants to unload for something slightly newer — has good gas mileage due to its size, and most likely wouldn’t qualify.)

A shame I don’t have a clunker to bring in so that I can add a few extra thousand into my personal car-buying fund.

Still, if someone has a 19+ mpg Automatic 1st-gen Saturn SC1 they want to keep alive and operating for a few extra years, I’d be happy to negotiate a price and logisitics…

OH MY GOD! I AM SO SICK OF ALL THIS CRYING ABOUT THIS WONDERFUL IDEA. Getting these high polluting junk cars off the roads is good. Nobody but you weirdo’s think these cars are worth more than $1000, so it’s great that the government wants to give someone $4500 for them.

As for the pollution during that engine kill, I imagine the POS would do a lot more harm if someone kept on driving it! GET A LIFE PEOPLE!

this is stupid, they are taking perfectly running cars fit for the road, keeping aftermarket part distributors in buisness, and people that cannot afford new cars mobile, and destroying them. ok, the car is gone never to be driven againe, where is it going? rite into a land fill or scrapyard. so in there pursuit to make this a greener planet, they are going to increase the size of every scrapyard and land fill.

I am sure that hard to find old mustangs, etc will not be traded in for a new Toyota! Besides I thought this site was about cars NOT a venue to air political grievances.

Lets see the Limo Liberals have realy done it:

1) 250,000 cars that won’t be getting repaired or using new,
aftermarket or used parts (not so good for those folks)
2) New cars sold, unions are happy, Government happy on account of all the new taxes both sales and property.
3 People who took the cash are happy until they default on the loan that they could not afford the cars are repossesed, and added to used car inventories.No more cheap cars for new buyers!!!!

whoever thought of this idea really had their head up their ass. the government is forcing people to buy new cars, but not everyone can afford them. so then they miss the payments and the car gets taken away. this ruins their credit as well as leaving them with no means of transportation. all they are doing is ruining the economy even more. if they sold the older cars to people who cant afford a new car, they could stimulate the economy and people might be able to do more since they don’t have a huge car payment over their head. this is so stupid and ridiculous. the government sucks even more for passing this bill.

How stupid! Ruin a perfectly good motor all because of this gas guzzling idea. That car looked liked to me it was in good shape. Many don’t have that good of a car. The government needs to have their head examined. If this is the case then cash for clunkers then we better get the same for up there on the hill a program called cash for old politicians then cause they are not doing their job right.

A Perfectly good Oldsmobile Aurora Destroyed because some one wanted something newer? it didnt look in bad condition either, oh well its true this bill only passed because it’s trying to get more people to buy new cars. Whats the point if the Economy goes the same way and some of these people lose there income are just going to lose there cars, if they still owe 10,000 on a new car. 4500 might seem like alot but it really isn’t. Why sacrifice a Sure thing for something your going into dept for?

A Ford Excursion with a V10 probably wouldn’t be CFC’d unless the owner is an idiot (granted, there is a possibility). CFC, although popular is a drop-in-the-bucket regarding overall car sales, and CFC is a drop-in-the-bucket regarding the existence of presently owned used cars, and CFC is a drop-in-the-bucket regarding the available used cars on the market today.

Seek and you shall find. CFC is not pushing anything out of existence, even if you’re looking to buy your Mother-in-Law a used Ford Explorer with original Firestones…

1746639, I am looking at it with an open mind, but the vast majority of these people trading vehicles in for this program are most likely people that haven’t kept up on maintenance, and their vehicles have fallen into disrepair, or require so much maintenance to get them back to proper running order that it’s just not worth it to these people, so they’re as much at fault as the vehicles themselves. I also understand that if you have a Ford Excursion with a V10, there’s really not that much you can do to raise it’s fuel economy, but then again, someone out there needs a vehicle like that, so why destroy it? It’s a ready made vehicle, they’ve already gone through the process of manufacturing it, which polluted enough, so why “recycle” it and pollute more? Just to boost new car sales? I don’t see the logic.

Nobi… just how much more efficient can you make an old V8? Most mods/work either restore an engine to its original efficiency or make it consume more gas. Stroker? Supercharger? Turbos make engines run more effiently but many engines are not affordable or good contenders for turbos. I guess there’s NOX water injection but that’s pretty damn expensive and there’s no room for error. The best that can be done most of the time is upgrade the intake/filter, maybe some exhaust work and improve the ignition system… and still the thing might get 18 MPG with the wind at its back.

There’s such a failure of people seeing the bigger picture it’s almost funny. I love old cars just as much as everyone else, but its time for some folks to man up and look at all sides of the story with an open mind.

So, we take a ready made car, pour hazardous chemicals into it, run it until destruction sending tons of pollutants into the air in the process, take what’s left of the vehicle, and “recycle” it, the process of which pollutes even more, to use the materials created in the recycling process to make a new car, which the car manufacturing process in and of itself pollutes quite a bit.

So in the end, we’ve successfully polluted a whole lot more, and wasted a whole bunch of cash when the vehicle could have been repaired and made more efficient for a lot cheaper.

I still don’t get it.

I question the legitimacy of ecologists who support inefficient vehicles being on the road vs. much newer ones with better emissions and MPG. Something is rotten in the State of Denmark, or maybe Delaware who knows.

The Chinese are driving up oil prices these days. By reducing consumption wherever in the world it can only help and I sense hypocracy to some extent. You can’t be an ecological activist AND love driving something with a big displacement engine everywhere… so don’t even try that.

My reservation about CFC is the cost. $1 billion is a lot of money, an additional $2 billion is cutting into things that should be accomplished elsewhere, like subsidizing Electric Vehicle purchases to make them more affordable as they hit the showrooms. Also, my friends in the business, local new car dealerships, think $4500 is overkill, and that the program would have made better use of the stimulus money if it were $2500 instead. I guess they’re right about that.

So these cars continue to pollute even in death. Nice move. I voted for Obama, and I’m glad I did. Unfortunatly, it was one of his minions who came up with this brilliant (ha) plan. I’m not sure, but I think the entire engine block could have been recycled too. If they didn’t want to resell them, then melting them down to the lowest common denomiator would have been a better way to go….

Once again, another brilliant plan thoroughly thought out, and perfectly executed by us brainy Americans…

I agree that the smoke is retarded, but its not that the parts wont be used. The cars will be recycled into metal that is going to be used in new cars or other industries.

I agree the program is great…but they should be able to come up with a better way to disperse the traded in cars in a much better way. Selling them at wholesale cost and paying back some of this incredible debt that the US has? No…much too logical. Donating them to needy families? No to kind and generous. Right I have it, lets completely destroy them so that no part can be used!!

The good is that sales are up for all companies, Ford has recorded a 2.3% profit. The bad is that they are just destroying these vehicles. Personally I think it is good for the incentive, but the way they get rid of the vehicles is absolutely stupid. I am wondering if the people in our Gov’t have have any brains what-so-ever, and that is sad.
