Six Degrees of Automotive Separation: Saab and Hudson
By Dan Strohl
Hemmings
In looking over the responses to our previous Hemmings Six Degrees of Automotive Separation Challenges, we seem to get more responses when we try to link domestic and foreign companies. So we’re going to put that theory to the test this week by asking you to link two companies with proud racing histories and innovative technologies. Yes, it’s Saab, builders of turbocharged rallying flyers, versus Hudson, builders of step-down NASCAR legends. Though never in direct competition, they share at least one common thread. Can you identify it? Continue reading at Hemmings.

Formula Drift Seattle, Part 1
Antonio Alvendia
It’s really, really late. I just got to the Formula D “host hotel” in Bothell, WA not too long ago, where tons of the Formula D tour regulars are sitting out in the lobby and outside patios with drinks in hand, being loud and cracking jokes, trying to unwind from a long day at the track. However, some teams had a longer day at the track than others… when I arrived to the Formula D pit area, I noticed Robbie Nishida‘s Dynamic Autosports/Hankook Tire 350Z up on jackstands, in the dusty, dirt covered pit area of Evergreen Speedway. Apparently, just a few minutes before I arrived, Robbie’s 350Z made contact with the wall on one of his practice runs, severely damaging the left side of his car. Above is a photo of the car, with the hood, fender, and suspension off as the Dynamic team hustles to collect parts to repair the car in time for tomorrow’s main qualifying session. "I Survived Cash For Clunkers"
By Jen Dunnaway
Editor
Wouldn’t it be cool if this ’85 Toronado could say this someday? Once the Cash For Clunkers nightmare is over, I’d like to print bumper stickers bearing the phrase and distribute them to every cool old heap still on the road. Sure, it’s true that right now the program is mostly just turning a bunch of Ford Explorers into metal cubes–but with trade-ins piling into the tens of thousands, you’ve got to know that plenty of rare old junk is surely being lost as well. And yes, Oldsmobile’s fugly front-wheel-drive weirdmobile might today be considered just an automotive freak of nature, hardly deserving of historical note and certainly not worth plucking off the scrap heap. But I’m betting that someday we’re going to be sorry that we crushed them all. I sure hope this one finds a good home.

Now, Fireball's Seen Everything
By Fireball Tim
Movie Car Design Master
I live in Malibu. Yes, movie stars, expensive cars, small dogs with diamond collars. Yea, I know what you’re thinking… “If only I could have a diamond collar.” Yea, don’t hide it. No? You don’t want one? Well, then you’re like me… ’cause that’s just plain stupid.
On the weekends, Malibu becomes a haven for the insane. Drivers, gawkers, paparazzi, tourists and yes, cars of all sorts. But this past weekend was unusual as I’ve never seen this before. A SUSHI ROACH COACH.
Imagine the great food this thing has. Sashimi Bugs… California Roach Rolls… Terayaki Sow Bugs. Mmmm. And, at only 42 bucks a roll, it’s a deal. So, get on down here…
Oh, but the day didn’t end there. Oh no… In came Dennis Woodruff’s “Dumb Car,” Angeline’s Pink Corvette (She wanted $10 bucks to take a photo of it. Pst…whatever Pinky) Then a slew of slow exotics due to the Chippy waiting for them. Looks like he was gunnin’ someone, but he was really just sleeping. Plus a few classic beasts, oh and the Space Shuttle landed. My dogs loved that.
All in all, it was a day unlike most days in this town. Come visit. Just bring your checkbook and American Express Black Card. And stay away from Ryan O’Neill if you see him. He’s not in a very good mood these days…

Novikov Almost Flips Out During WRC Finland!
By John Coyle
Deputy Editor
When he crested a hill during a stage of WRC Rally in Finland, Evgeny Novikov’s lead foot nearly caused his Citroen C4 to pull a burly back flip. Yikes! The in-car footage actually reminds me of the view from the cockpit of my Dad’s old Piper during takeoff. First, the nose comes up, and then it’s nothing but sky. As the announcer—in my opinion, hysterically—points out, this near-miss “indicates why not every jump should be taken flat-out.” That’s some classic British understatement for you.

Caption Contest: This Week's Winner!
By John Coyle
Deputy Editor
Oh. My. God. I can hardly believe it. There wasn’t one “priceless” submission this week! I almost want to go back and see if I missed one, but as journalists like to say, a development like that’s “too good to fact check.” Bravo, guys. Also, I wanted to thank LedZeppelin for trying to help me out by picking his favorites. I didn’t go with any of his suggestions, but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the effort. Anyway, maybe it’s just my sadness over all the poor “Clunkers” being destroyed, but this week’s winner is DJs-zj360, who came up with: “Aw, the poor thing must of hung itself before getting traded in for that hot new CARS deal.” Tune in tomorrow for the next installment of our race-ready Caption Contest!

Artchis AE86s at Sugo Raceway
Antonio Alvendia
In celebration of our beloved “Hachiroku Day” today (8/6/2009), I thought I’d post up some photos from my archive of AE86 photos. I have sooooooo many AE86 photos in my hard drives and photo albums it’s ridiculous. So many in fact, that I could start an AE86 only blog site if I felt like it! But no time for that right now, as right now we’re concentrating on building Motor Mavens and telling the whole world about our site!
I wasn’t sure if I should categorize this as “Point&Shoot” or “Archaeology” since these pics seem to fit into both categories. I just decided on “Point&Shoot” since these pics are more that style anyway… they aren’t artistic or photographically dope, but it doesn’t matter. The subject matter is off the hook!
These pics are three years old – they were taken back in spring of 2006, to be exact. I was in Japan for a “work/vacation,” just hanging out with Team Orange, and I decided to roll up to D1 Sugo with them. When we arrived, the lower division D1 qualifying had just ended, and I was so happy to see all these dope AE86s around! I must have looked ridiculous as hell, taking a million photos of these AE86s on their loader trucks… the owners of the cars laughed at me, probably thinking “damn, this guy is going bananas taking all these photos!
