Papa John Gives Out 35,847 Pizzas to Camaro Owners!

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

When Papa John Schnatter was reunited with his beloved 1971 1/2 Camaro after 25 years, he was so stoked that he not only paid 250,000 grand to its current owner, but promised to give every Camaro owner a free pizza. So yesterday, 35, 847 proud Camaro owners took him up on the offer, while the heads of Pizza Hut and Domino’s tried to figure out a way to make their companies look human in the face of Papa’s blinding awesomeness. Head over to Jalopnik to check out a gallery full of Camaro owners posing with their pies.

Bad-Ass Supermoto Rider Makes Bad-Ass Video

By John Coyle

For some reason, most of the motorcycle videos which have been uploaded to StreetFire lately have been either clips of MotoGP races—which, don’t get me wrong, totally rock—or kind of boring. This video, on the other hand, is neither. Not only does this rider know his way around a bike, he’s found some killer locations to tear up, and both Ryan and I were impressed by the quality of this footage. Oh, and if you’re curious, he’s really good at wheelies. Like really good. There’s one part where it seems like he’s got the bike at a 90-degree angle! Can anyone tell what kind of machine he’s riding?

Not Found on Ebay: A Large Freightliner Pickup Truck

By Jim Brennan

The years between 2003 and 2008 were known for a lot of things, but will most likely be remembered as the era of extravagance. Everything had to be big: movies that routinely grossed over $100 million, homes that had bathrooms bigger than most houses of the 60′s, celebrity salaries that outpaced the gross national product of most small countries, and everything from luxury yachts to exotic cars were reaching unheard-of prices. It was true that nothing created success like excess. So in honor of the era of excess, I give you an excessively large pickup. Is this a personal vehicle? Why yes, it is.

NorthWest MogFest 2009

By David Belau

I still haven’t made it to NorthWest MogFest. Thankfully, my friends went again this year to prove how lame I am.

Mogfest started out as a gathering for Unimog owners to hang out and drive their machines. It’s grown into a gathering for all European off-road machines.

I’ll try to go next year and prove my manhood. Until then, enjoy the pictures my friends sent to me. (Special thanks to Doug, Luke, Art, Andy, Pete and the rest of the clan.)

Mustang, Challenger, and Camaro To Take On NASCAR?

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

With the Car of Tomorrow redesign underway in NASCAR’s second-tier Nationwide Series, there’s been a lot of wild-ass speculation about whether the Big Three might seize the opportunity to introduce their newest crop of pony cars to stock car racing. It’s not as far-fetched as you might think: there were those CoT prototypes tested last year at Richmond, Ford has all but committed at least some version of its Mustang to run in Nationwide, and the mags and the blogs have been mulling over the idea for months. Two main threads within the CoT development discussion include 1. the importance of running a car that’s closer to “real” cars available at the showroom, and 2. the idea that the car would be different enough from Sprint Cup’s CoT that Sprint Cup drivers would have no particular advantage in the series–so in other words, you wouldn’t have to watch Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch win the race on cruise control weekend after weekend, with the rookies whom Nationwide is supposed to serve bringing up the rear of the pack. I think the racing of factory-based Mustangs, Camaros, and Challengers would not only be awesome, but it’d give the ailing Nationwide series the shot in the arm it needs: it could finally be cool in its own right, rather than a little-brother series to Sprint Cup and a lazy playground for already-established NASCAR champs. Check out Murray Pfaff’s rendering from the October 2009 issue of Hot Rod, which, apart from the fact that it depicts the supposed Nationwide cars in Sprint Cup sponsorship regalia, gives a pretty good idea of what Detroit’s pony cars might look like racing side-by-side on the track. The whole thing kind of begs the question, though: what’s Toyota supposed to run?

Detroit Free Press to Muscle Car Fans: Don't Panic

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

Call us nuts, but we were actually feeling pretty good after reading this piece from the Detroit Free Press. Writer Mark Phelan brings up some great points and actually clues us in on some existing technology that is going to give some immediate help (when implemented) in the fuel economy department of gasoline engines.

There’s so much doom and gloom happening in the media on a nearly daily basis with respect to cars, especially the types of cars we like. It was great to read something that actually gave us some hope for the future that isn’t pie in the sky fantasy.

If you are looking for some positive muscle car ju-ju click on the link to the Detroit Free Press story.

I Be Trippin…

By David Clarke

Stupid lingo aside, I’m getting ready to go on my first road trip of the summer. Well technically it’s still summer, but I’ll be heading to Pittsburgh, PA on September 10th from Albany, NY which rounds out to about 1000 miles there and back.  I’m going there to see the Steelers home opener with two die-hard Steelers fans to watch the game and to watch the Superbowl Championship ceremony. My trip itinerary includes driving down I-90 west into Buffalo, NY where we’ll be picking up one of the two fans, and then promptly heading back onto I-90 where we’ll eventually hit I-79 South into Pittsburgh. And what we’ll be taking this manly roadtrip in, none other than a dark gray 2007 Hyundai Elantra Sedan. Chosen for its maximum gas mileage and a minimum comfort. This is gonna be fun. Have you taken your road trip yet, if so where did ya go ?

Graphic UK PSAs: We Need These in the States

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

Last night, I was watching NBC when Brian Williams reported on the controversy over this new anti-texting while driving spot from the UK. It’s not even showing on the tube in the States, but people here are watching it online, and that was apparently enough to warrant a mention on the most-watched nightly news in the country. Now, this spot is graphic and upsetting for sure, but you know what else is graphic and upsetting? Kids getting killed because they’re glued to their cell phones when they should be looking at the road. And the idea that Americans would be offended by graphic violence in the name of safety, when folks are regularly shown getting murdered and autopsied for entertainment—see NCIS, Law and Order, CSI—is utterly ridiculous. Personally, I think we should have spots like this here, even though the cynic in me says we’re so immune to brutal violence they wouldn’t do any good.  What do you think?
