Spooky Night Shots of a Russian Junkyard

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

Since I’ve spent a lot—like, a lot—of time watching slow-motion drift videos over on StreetFire, my patience for artsy automotive stuff has been pretty much exhausted. But I still thought these night shots of this Russian junkyard were totally cool, in a spooky kind of way. I guess it helps if you’re fascinated by Soviet-era iron, like I am, but even non-gearheads should be able to appreciate these pictures. Head over to English Russia for the full set.

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Here’s an e-mail that came into our inbox recently:

Im 16 years old and check this website religiously day in and day out for the past couple of years. Im almost 16 and have worked and worked to save up enough money for a car. My problem is that my parents dont think i need a car, and sure i dont but, im stuck driving my parents mini van everywhere. Im almost 16 and im just sick of it i want something i can love thats mine i dont need to go fast or anything but working with cars is something ive always wanted to do, but never have i got the opportunity to because my parents tell me that “i pretty much have a car, why would i need my own”. i just kinda needed to vent and i know the people at CarDomain will understand. thanks for taking your time and reading this.

Procar M1s at Monaco

By Speedhunters

Car Culture At Large

This footage to me, seems a bit inconceivable, as I’m only used seeing F1 cars hammering around the streets of Monaco…. not a field of M1s! The race was won by a certain Niki Lauda BTW…

The Cash For Clunkers Tally Is In; Here's What Sold

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

The numbers have been tallied and it looks like the Cash for Clunkers program aided not only the sale of small economy cars, but also helped bump truck sales and even moved a few Hummers! As an example, Ford sold 22,338 examples of its Focus and more than 16,000 F-150s. Curious.

Other suprise sales numbers included the 15 Hummer HT3s that were sold, and 1,152 Smart cars that were moved off lots. To show just how steep the battle is for truck sales, the Toyota Tundra sold only slightly more than 2,000 units during the program. The Prius, more than 15,000.Chevy sold 16,300 Silverado trucks.

Despite the fact that so many trucks were sold the government is still calling the program a success and the Secretary of Transportation, Ray LaHood proudly proclaimed that Clunkers, “helped consumers ditch costly gas-guzzlers for safer, more fuel-efficient vehicles that are much better for the environment.” He forgot to add, “and can tow more.”

Meanwhile, some dealers are still not paid, and new-car sales sank like the Titanic when the program ended. No one is reporting how many people really went back to work due to Clunkers or how much that cost us per job. Some scrapyards are so overwhelmed that they are crushing cars without ever parting them out, and others are suffering from reduced scrap prices.

Here’s the Associated Press story on the sales figures.

An Afternoon with John Fitch

By Dan Strohl

Hemmings

In my line of work, I get the chance to talk with many legends of the auto industry – men who have shaped automotive history in some way in the pursuit of speed, safety, profit, fame, glory or their own ideas of what is right and wrong, automobile-wise. A few months ago, I was lucky enough to have spoken with John Fitch for a Hot Rod Hero article in Hemmings Muscle Machines, and when he invited me down to his place in Lime Rock, Connecticut, I jumped at the chance to meet him in person. CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot – The 1977 – 79 AMX by American Motors

By Jim Brennan

UDMan

Welcome to another installment of the CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot, a regular feature which aims to expand the definition of what a muscle car is, and to get readers to exclaim “WTF” in the process. American Motors was once again in the middle of a financial meltdown, desperately trying to find the right product, while at the same time cutting development costs to stay afloat. One way of bringing in the showroom traffic the dealers so desperately needed was to offer a performance model built from an existing model. However, by the late 70′s, most of these performance models were merely tape stripe and wheel additions, and without any real enhancements to the engine, or the handling. AMC did manage to offer a pretty good V8 option for the Hornet, and the hatchback two-door Hornet body style was only three years old, and still looked sharp. But because of AMC’s financial situation, there were actually based on three different models. Let’s take a look at the 1977 through 1979 AMC AMX.

What's New at NorthWest Auto Salon

By Ryan Porter

IN-N-OUT Editor

Last week I stopped by NorthWest Auto Salon to see what’s new.  I’d love to tell you it was completely random, but with a hot car show the following weekend I had a feeling that the NWAS crew might have some interesting cars, and I was right.  You might recognize the Carrera GT from our visit last year but wait till you see what else was in the shop! Also, if you’re here in the NW make sure to vote for the NWAS crew again this year in the King5TV Best of the Western Washington.

Aside from the great cars that were in the shop Blake told me that the shop has been staying super busy with their mobile detail work, and we’re not just talking in Seattle.  Scuderia details down in California, paint restoration down in Portland, and some supercar details in our own backyard.  Talk about a rough job.  Let’s see who can name every car pictured in this blog! More after the jump.

Dana Mecum on Mecum Auctions: an Interview

By Joseph DeLucca

Luxvelocity

I recently had the chance to interview Mr. Dana Mecum, CEO of Mecum auctions. If your are interested in getting in on the auction game or are just curious about his company, it is a really great interview. Also if you’re a huge muscle car fan like myself then getting to see the HDTV tapings of the show on television is a huge treat. Someday I hope to snatch up a hot muscle car from one of these auctions. What is your dream muscle car from the past?

1) What was the first car you fell in love with?

Dana Mecum: The first car I fell in love with was actually a motorcycle. When I was 14, I had a Honda 125 for off-road use, however I did ride it on the highway and freedom was found.

How my passion for cars relates to my business? There’s a fine line there. Again, my father has been selling cars for close to 60 years now, so I grew up around selling cars. I have just as much a passion of making a deal as I have a passion for a car, so oftentimes it’s caused conflict in my business life. The way I’ve been able to raise and provide for my family has been selling cars. Over the years, there have been times I’ve made a poor decision and not sold the car because I liked the car more than the money. At times this has created a conflict. There are cars that I’m really in love with and fascinated by, so the way those cars usually get sold is the intrigue or the art of the deal outweighs my passion for the car.

The A-Team Van Revealed!

By Fireball Tim

Movie Car Design Master

Wow! Holy crap! It’s unbelievable! Sorry, none of these things. The A-Team van has been revealed and it’s… well, the A-Team Van.

Not really any different, this shot taken on set. But hey, you can’t mess with Mr.T. Oh wait, Mr. T isn’t in this. Neither is Starbuck, uh, I mean “what’s his name.” And George Peppard is sleeping with the fishes, so that leaves….. the A-Team Van?

YAYYYY!! The crew is back!! At least one of them. Ok, I’m done here.
