Chevy II Gasser Owner Pissed Off at Car and Driver
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
Car and Driver recently ran a feature article on the BMW X6 M where they took the new Bimmer off roading, road racing and drag racing. One photo in the article appears to show the Bimmer pulling ahead of an altered wheelbase 63 Chevy II at Milan Dragway. A close look at the photo shows that it is clearly Photoshopped. Well, the Chevy owner is pissed, and has posted on the H.A.M.B. and the Car and Driver forums. And he doesn’t mince words.
Buddy called a coupla days ago kinda laughing asking me when did you get your doors blown off by a suv,I thought he was kiddin me. I know this world is messed up but WHY try to decive the public? Alls I can say is the mag, editors and writers are LAIRS,CHEATERS and WANNA BE SCAMMERS.
Bring that ol bmw out, title fer title and write an artical bout that.
I’ll be driven around in a little red suv.
No wonder the only time i see that mag is in the doctors office, makes me sick.
Keep in mind that the Chevy runs the quarter in high 9s @ 135 mph while the Bimmer covers the quarter 12.8 seconds @ 110mph. A bit of a difference, huh? So does the Chevy owner deserve to be angry? Does Car and Driver owe him an apology for altering the photo? Thanks for the tip, Tim!

No to mince words. It’s about pride! The A–H@1e that photochoped it should have his jewels block chopped for that! C&D owes him at the least a formal applogie just for using his pic without his permission and maybe enough greenbacks to fill his gas tank 30 or 40 times worth for the world wide slap in the face!!

I would have been totally upset, and I don’t blame the Chevy owner! Obviously it’s about pride, but when the Chevy owner poured his heart, passion, and wallet into something that reflects hard work, pride is worth defending.

He has every right to be miffed. First, the x6 in general is the answer to a question that NO ONE asked. And second, thats a 3 second difference. who are they trying to fool? C&D’s old address is the same as BMW’s corporate headquaters, also. Only in michigan

yeah, i can kinda see why the chevy guys mad. he spent so much time and what not buildin a 9 sec car, just to have it look bad in a mag by a new car. and yeah car and driver should have asked first. but this picture is just to catch your attention and read the article, and to show that its a fast vehicle. that chevy guy should be happy his car was in a magazine.

They should pay him some cash for the fake picture shown his car getting beatn by an suv. Second they should pay him for simply just using his car in their magazine. You can beleive everything you see or read in magazines, etc.

jesus christ people calm down its just a picture. nowhere in this article did c/d try and say the bmw beat the chevy. photoshopped or not, this picture isnt anywhere near the finishline, its at the lights. its a good pic for the magazine. nothing to do with trying to sell cars. do you really think those in the market for an 80+k suv would be persuaded one way or the other by this picture??? i dont understand what they’re “lying” about, this is a launch! this pic doesnt say who the winner is! who is deceiving who?! 5% of this article might have been relevant to this picture. for all of you who love picturebooks without words… i guess thats perfect. and the chevy owner really shoudlnt be crying this much.

Man they should give that guy an apology anyway. That’s messed up. And what the hell are they doing even photoshopping this BMW suv on a dragstrip anyway? Man that’s pathetic and Car and Driver ought to be shot.

The only place CD screwed up is not getting authorization for using his image in the article. Having said that, the guy need to take a chill pill.

Its crap and it is a lie. Words or not, the picture shows something that clearly didnt happen and 9 out of 10 times wouldnt. Stop pretending.

Not good for Car & Driver. They usually seem pretty realistic. The Nova owner shouldn’t be so mad though, I doubt anyone really believes that BMW would beat an all out drag car. 12 sec is pretty impressive though. And harris, if you’re going to hate on someone’s spelling you should learn to spell things correctly yourself.

I gave this more thought though. The pic shows the BMW slightly ahead but yeah… having the idea it was winning is a really knee-jerk conclusion. There would have to be a delay on the Nova, which would become a Bimmer-seeking missile on it’s half of the green.

I can see why its owner would be pissed though. They should have been upfront with him and shown him the shopped image, then sought his approval. If I were him I would have demanded a caption… and some cash.

READY FOR SOME ULTIMATE IRONY?!? I found myself this weekend in an ICU waiting room this weekend in Dover, DE. My Mom’s Aorta tore open and she had to go in for prompt repairs of course. She’s one very lucky lady. She had two extremely qualified surgeons fix her up and it looks like she’ll be okay.

Anyway I had my choice of Car & Driver or Motor Trend. I read Motor Trend 3 times.

As if anyone would take that rag seriously. They give out car and truck of the year awards to the highest bidder. How else would you explain the renault alliance winning in the 80`s. They owe an apology to the owner. But if they do it will be burried an the back were nobody will see it. They are nothing more than a sales broucher the truth would sell more cars than lies. A suv running 12.8 is damm respectable to bad the magazine is not.

I think they should apologize not for the fact that they made it look like the bmw is winning in a photoshop picture but for the fact that they did not ask the owner of the chevy if it was alright to use a photo of his car in there magazine and say that the bimmer will look like it is eating your car for breakfast so that it will sell becuase we are getting kick backs from bmw to make them look good, i mean i get the magazine for free everymonth and almost every issue has them praising bmw at least and i have counted 4-10 times an issue even if it isnt the better car in any respect, no disrespect to bimmer owners if its your thing great cars are about individuality just saying there are tons of cars out there and all they do is bimmers.

DARN TOOTIN’ LAIRS!!11 THEM VARMENTS GOT ME AGEEN!
really. lol calm it down, it’s a magazine…of course they’re going to try and make it look more interesting through any means of editing. Plus, they were GIVEN the X6 M by BMW to test….you really think they want to show a picture of it ass-dragging 3 lengths behind a car? Despite the fact that the gasser is a purpose built dragger, people are going to see that the BMW is losing, and therefore, must not be that great. C&D has to think of their own butts too in terms of making their sponsors happy.

I honestly can’t believe that this has gotten the traction it has. Anybody who actually RTFA would know that the photo was a setup/photoshop job. Plus, the Chevy (and the butthurt owner/driver) is more or less unidentifiable in the ‘art’. It takes VERY thin skin to be upset about this, instead of just laughing it off.

Honestly they shouldn’t have used a picture of his car without his permission, especially in a situation where they are trying to create an action shot where it looks like his car is loosing to a slower car. I can understand his frustration. Magazines like car and driver and motor trend don’t really interest me because there are no real tech articles. They seem to be aimed at consumers who want someone to tell them what car to buy rather than enthusiasts that want ideas on stuff to do to the cars they enjoy.

@Tony: I don’t think the car was white, I think that it was a blank white space/wall behind the BMW when the actual photo was taken. It’s possible they still changed the color of the Chevy, though.

My friend tells me; In NHRA pro bracket, the BMW would get a three second head start. So it would be a fair race. That’s how pro-stock bracket works!

I despise Car and Driver and will never -ever- subscribe to their magazine again. They have have a knack for favoring foreign cars even if the results say otherwise, and I think they are poor at what they do. Just my honest opinion.

They should’ve just changed the color of the Chevy while they were doing the other PS work (which isn’t the most convincing I’ve ever seen). CRISIS AVERTED. Did the article say that the BMW beat the Chevy or something? Even if was a real race a freeze frame like this doesn’t tell much of the story and certainly shouldn’t be used to tell who won the race. So unless they said something about it beating drag cars or that particular car, I don’t think an apology or anything like that is in order. That being said, the whole thing is pretty lame on C&D’s part.

The doctor’s office observation is right, I’ll flip through the pages of C&D 5 times rather than Women’s Day or God knows what else BUT aside from using it to pass time in one of the most boring environments on Earth, I wouldn’t wipe my ass with pages when credibility is to be considered.
