Mint Comanche

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Douglas just picked up this mint Comanche and is looking to swap in a bigger engine. If you have any suggestions, leave a comment on his ride page.

I love these things. I still don’t get why Jeep doesn’t continue to offer a pickup.

JEEP has a history of making some nice vehicles… and some bad moves. I wasn’t thrilled with them pulling the Cherokee and replacing it with the Liberty. Guess they tried to woo the Rav4 crowd. Alienated umpteen years of Cherokee enthusiasts instead…

I always liked the Comanche, partly because of its strong family resemblance to the Cherokee. Nice little truck, especially if properly cared for.

I always assumed the Comanche went away because of Chrysler’s acquistion of AMC in 1987. They had the Dakota, which in its first incarnation was about the same size as the last-gen Comanche, so why make both?

don’t listen to them, I’ve been screwing with my cherokee (96) and my dads 91 for years. there are loads of things you can do to the 4.0 h.o without swapping for another engine. BEST thing to do would be to keep the 4.0 and stroke it to 4.6 or 4.7. hell if you go on ebay there is a stroker engine with a WARRANTY that makes over 300ft lbs of torque and 300 horsepower. then swap the intake from a 99 style cherokee to the renix intake you have, bore out the throttle body (also available on ebay) put a set of aftermarket long tube headers on it and a K&N fipk 2 intake system topped off with a jet stage 2 chip. Swap the axle for a grand cherokees rear end with disc brakes, and build up the transmission with a shift kit.. you’ll have the meanest sleeper on the block. capable of beating camaro ss’s and keeping up with stock corvettes. (then you can always supercharge it with a hesco (or other) kit. Ridiculous power and torue for a jeep. screw the hemi.

From experience a well tuned GM 4.3L V-6 will give you the power you want with pretty good full economy. I had a 91 GMC Sonoma with it and stomped the hell out of a 350 powered S10… Its fairly cheap to get and will fit in your engine bay with room to spare. Don’t drop a huge V8 because you will end up weighing the front end down and won’t have any room for essentials like steering or the fromt CV axles for the 4 wheel drive

4.0 would probably the easiest swap but what the guy below me said HEMI i may not be a MOPAR guy but I do admire a burly V8 hemi screaming or should i say roaring down the street.

I have always loved these trucks. I have thought a lot about getting one myself. The other engine option is of course the 4.0 and there are enough Cherokees and Wranglers out there with the 4.0, there are a lot of performance boltons available for that engine. I’d just put a 4.0 in it and hop that up if I were you.
