The Most Badass Movie Car Ever!

By Mike Musto

RideLust.com

Last night as I was skimming through the channels I came upon what is perhaps the most badass movie car ever to grace the big screen. It was made in 1973, had zoomies for exhaust pipes and a big honkin’ Weiand blower that helped this beast pump out 600 horsepower. You see Mad Max was on, not the Road Warrior mind you, but the original movie that started it all. I first saw this post-apocalyptic import when I was about 8 years old and I’ll never forget it. The phrase: “Last of the V8 Interceptors”, is a line that refers to one car only, this being the 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT of one Max Rockatansky. This was the car that Max used to get his revenge on the psychotic biker gang that mowed down his family and the one that he later used to scour the Australian wasteland in search of fuel.

I then began to think of my all time favorite movie cars and believe it or not, I’ve actually put a lot of thought into labeling the Interceptor as the #1 most badass movie car ever. I figured that if I’m actually going to throw this out there that I’d better have some sort of reasons as to why it hit the el numero uno spot. Now, it’s obvious that some people out there are going to disagree with me, and even though you’d all be wrong, everyone’s entitled to their opinions. So without further adieu here are my rules for naming the most BADASS movie car to ever hit the silver screen.

RULES:
1. It has to look the business. Meaning, if you saw it coming towards you the vehicle in question would make you stop and say, “Damn, that thing is BADASS.”

2. Sound. If it doesn’t rattle the tiles off the wall or make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up then it has no grounds being considered. This thing should sound like WAR at start-up.

3. Presence. This is a big one. The vehicle in question has to have a presence that makes it immediately trounce all others in a parking lot situation. Simply stated, this would be the car you would walk over to first, to check out.

4. Power. If we pop the hood and spy a slant-6 with a one barrel you’re out. A V8 (or maybe a V12) is the only thing that will qualify.

5. It CANNOT be possessed in any way, shape or form. So for those of you that wanted to put up Christine or that weird Lincoln type thing from “The Car”… well, you’re S.O.L.

6. It has to be real. Example: the Tumbler from Batman, this is a real working and driving vehicle, so it definitely qualifies. The Mach 5 from Speed Racer or Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, however… Well, if you choose these as badass vehicles you should be locked in their trunks without an air hose…

7. It’s has to have had a major role in the movie, which means it either had to be the hero car or best supporting actor. Small cameos will not do.

8. Hmm… well… there is no 8. So just hit the above 7 and let me know your picks…

i guess im not partial to the multi produced vehicles like chargers/cameros/mustangs etc, needs to be something unique, thats why i chose the car from wraith, Dodge’s M4S…

Dodge M4S Turbo Interceptor – which stands for “Mid-engine 4-cylinder Sport. 6 prop cars were built, 4 of which were only bodies and destroyed during filming. Another two fully-functional props were built for an estimated $1,500,000. The Dodge M4S was powered by a Mopar 2.2 “Trans” four cylinder engine twin-cam that produced 440 horsepower.

2.2 Trans Four OHC 8 valve I4 (2198 cc / 132 cid)
400 Horsepower @ 7000 RPM
300 lbs of torque
0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds (estimated)
1/4 mile: 12.9 seconds @ 104 mph (estimated)
Top Speed: 194.8 (observed speed – Road & Track Magazine)

Really, the TLB ’55 Chevy would take any other movie car and shove it up the owners’ ass. The TLB ’55 reeked of all out bad-ass, no-bullshit, modern gunslinger business.

What’s this “Batmobile” bullshit? That’s for geeks who don’t know what a “car” is. We’re not talking about tanks, we’re talking automobiles. The most bad ass movie car ever is the all-business, all go and no show primer gray ’55 Chevy in Two-Lane Blacktop. Nothing can compare to the looks and noises.

I’m going to go more modern and put a vote in for bumblebee.

But I’d also like to throw one in for Blade’s charger too.

I don’t Know if the dodge MS4 from the Wraith follows all the rules. If I remember the movie correctly the car is driven by the ghost of the dead boyfriend and since the car can vanish and re-appear that might put it in the ballpark of “Christine”. I agree it is a badass car and one would have to be blind not to check it out in a parking lot. but I don’t think its a follows the rules here.

Yo Mike… What about the Dodge MS4 turbo Intercepter from “The Wraith” The movie itself had some pretty cool race scenes and if you guys havent seen it its worth a look on a rainy day… Some poor acting/special effects… but it has some cool parts… I think it was made around 1985-90…Sci-fi/Drama http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zx2QgPS4ssk

Well if there’s a couple of movie cars that I think are pretty badass, my top choice would have to be the 72 buick riviera in crank. Ok so its competely stock and doesn’t have any fanc buttons or a blower sticking a foot and a half out the hood. But that car looks so badass stock.its always been my favorite car since I watched due south as a kid. The fact that Jason Statham drives it in crank just makes it that much more badass, I watched that movie and wished I didn’t sell mine when I couldn’t restore it. Second car is the white Challenger in the original vanishing point, the roar from that thing when he’s pulling through the gears makes you want a four speed muscle machine. Again no fancy buttons and flare, just pure badass.

the Mach 5 would qualify since it was built with a 73 Corvette, but my vote is for Project X in The Hollywood Knights!

Mabb1 – Totally agree.
.
There are a few lesser known movies out there that have some simply amazing cars as well as car chases. Obviously “Shaker Run” is one, then there is “To Live and Die in LA” with a mid-80′s Chevy Caprice, “Short Time” with a Dodge Diplomat as well as “Midnight Run” with Robert Deniro and Charle Grodin… they ran from the cops through the desert in a old K5 Blazer… Good Stuff!

Here’s a 2 for 1 deal,A movie made here in New Zealand around 1985 ,You can have either the Trans am ,Striped out stunt car or later in the clip the racer Ford Capri,Both driven on open public roads in the days before CGI .
I like the capri

My vote has got to go for the ’55 Chevy from 2 lane blacktop. Not only does it qualify for all of the above rules, it was flat black, flip front, ala gasser style, it also had hydraulic throttle linkage hooked to the 2 carbs, and it has movie history tying it to American Graffiti. The ’55 from the original crash scene for 2 lane blacktop at the end, which was never used, is the same ’55 Chevy from Graffiti.

Well id have to say the 1973 stingray from “corvette summer ” has to be a wild ride, Come on guys switching a ride to right hand drive just to hang out with chics on the curb side, to sweet, and the car from the “wraith” that was a bad ass ride.

I Agree the interceptor there is a bad-ass ride, though the blower was poorly faked for the movie, any car guy knows that you do not activate the blower belt via switch, the spoilers, flares, and scoops make up for that though so it still gets a vote. I gotta agree with fortyfordsedan, the Blade charger was also bad-ass, but why only stop with that one the general lee practically flew, and the fast and furious charger was sick as all hell (in both movies)so 68-70 chargers are the shit.
MiamiMiataGroup Transformers did not come out until 1984 there were no 70s transformers

I more I look at the more I want one. In fact that may be the only movie/tv car I actually clone…

Oct 21, 2009 at 9:35 am

Yeah, definately the Interceptor.

And in second place: “It’s got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it’s got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It’s a model made before catalytic converters so it’ll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?”

The Charger from Blade is also a pretty badass car. Its hard to beat the car from Mad Max though. It just has that look

Grandpa Munster’s Drag-U-La, considering how early this ride existed, is one seriously sick ride and it must’ve helped forge the way for many sick TV rides that followed.
