New CarDomain Ratings System Explained
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
As part of our recently completed site migration (and yes we are still working out a few bugs) we revisited the way ratings work on CarDomain. Many people complained that they saw their ratings drop. That is not exactly the case. I asked Steve Crane, one of our developers, to explain the tweaks they made to the system.
The rating system is something we take very seriously. It serves as a two purpose piece of information that is extremely important. On one hand it gives a the ride owner a sense of how others think of their ride. On the other it shows users what rides they might be interested in spending some time learning about.
When we undertook to update the site we noticed a few issues with the system as it stood. The old system was rounding up improperly giving the impression of having a higher rating for everyone. Anything above 3 was a 3.5, anything above 3.5 went to 4 and so on. Similarly a system was meant to be in place that prevented rides with a few stacked votes (say three people voting 5) to beat out rides that have been getting consistently high votes for a long time (say fifty votes with 20 being 4 and 30 being 5) was not functioning. Both of these issues have been ‘fixed’ as it were. This will result in everyone seeing what looks like a reduction in rating.
For our long term goals a full redesign of the rating system should help everyone. We are working on a system that will reward rides that do well over the long haul and give rides that are new rewards for improvement. Also in the wings is a few ideas that will help give people who rate rides well over time more of a say in how rides rate compared to other rides. Our goal will always be to more truly reflect the votes and opinions of those doing the rating while not allowing for petty ratings or ‘bought’ ratings to influence the system.
Hopefully this answers more questions than it raises. Post your questions below and I’ll do my best to answer them.

I still can’t rate anybody! I just get a long error message.
This is it:

Oh and if CD staff is still reading this on page 3, I got an unrelated suggestion (sorry)… Lengthen blog pages by 50%. They load from top to bottom anyway, and new blog entries can come in at a frantic pace sometimes.

Aside from that, I’m sure you knew you were opening up a real can of worms with the site mods. Keep up the good work. LOL they’ll start shutting up when you see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I ended up making a new page and suddenly my last page with all the pics I deleted appeared again complete with all the pics and info. My new page seems to be working correctly with the only thing being this “mellowone” spammer that leaves dumb stuff in my comments everytime I check out my ride page. Is there, or will there be anyway to block unwanted guests from leaving comments? If so I’d be more than intrested in knowing about it. Thanks

I agree with Insane73. You should not be allowed to comment or rate unless you have your own car on here. if you want to be a MEMBER here, you need to have a ride page. PERIOD.
And back on the wasting space, then you got idiots who think it is cool to put up a car page with a toy car, pimped 4wheeler, boat, etc.
Like this guy: Member ID: blumc. He has two ride pages with toy cars. WTF?!

i think a lot of people here don’t understand that most on here that post comments of others pages are going to get more rating than the ones who never post comments. The more you use the site the better your ride is going to get rated.sites that have not be updated in months are not going to have high rating.also i see people giving bad comments on peoples pages but when you go to check out there ride most of the time they don’t even have one to show.i think you sould not be able to comment or rate if you do not have a ride on display.if they want to look fine you don’t have to be a member to look. also i lost the mods list on the side of my page and now it will not let me add them back now.

Man I see alot of folks are upset. I can understand and agree with some of the comments but I really don’t take the ratings system that seriously. I mean you take pride in your own ride. It really shouldn’t matter how others view it because people will always have an opinion no matter what you do.
As far as the rating system here is something crazy I was thinking about. I know its sounds a little extreme but how bout having the creators of cardomain rate rides. Let this count for 40% of the rating system. That way people who know cars can judge someone’s ride based on its modifications and so on. I am counting on the cardomain staff not to use any bias of course when rating cars. And then just let the other 60% of the ratings be the people who just come to a page and give ratings for whatever reason. Of course this suggestion would put alot of work into the hands of the developers of car domain but its just an idea. Maybe this will help or solve some of the issues where people who have high ratings with a pretty much bone stock car. Just a thought……….

Ok I got a question or 2. Me and my buddy were in the Top ten of Overall rides before the crash/overhaul w/e were calling it and i understand that some peoples ratings might go down. Are the ratings working again?? Iv been at 4 stars for a while now and haven’t heard if the rating system is live. Hell my old blazer is sitin at 4 stars as well lol and if your saying they are fixed if i had 4.5 before wouldnt that mean with the new system i would be somewhere between 4 and 4.5? O and another funny thing i noticed the other day it seemed all the top slotted rides and a chick posing infront of their ride does that help XD
Good luck with the debugging

I realize that you are working to fix the problems that are arrising from the recent updates and changes to the site.
I would love to update some of my pages, but, A few of the most recent page changes are missing and 1 entire page is still missing. I had completely revamped my ride pages just prior to your updating of the site, and was wondering if I need to go and revamp them again. I just would like to edit the pages in the format that they were in before all of the glitches popped up. I can’t make changes now, unless I know that the last changes I made are definately not going to pop back up and mess things up again.

JoeCool, if you don’t want to bother with past rides and see no value in it, great! don’t bother. I have different poiriorities.
-
Also, CD technical support people let me know if I’m wrong about this… the number of ride pages isn’t really much of a factor in terms of bandwidth used, it’s more a matter of webserver storage. Sure, other bandwidth issues may still exist for backup operations and such but CD can probably have millions of rides without a hiccup as long as CD staff make provisions accordingly during that progression.
-
I’m not saying list the sold rides with the owned rides necessarily, but past accomplishments should have a place. You don’t know where you’re going unless you know where you have been…

So GT wildfire:
You are saying that CarDomain should waste their already low bandwidth to keep someone’s ride page they have not updated in YEARS simply because they worked hard on it even though it is gone? WHATEVER! In that case, let me make a ride page for ALL 15 RIDES I HAVE OWNED THROUGHOUT MY LIFE. No, I keep it current and others should too!

I have doubts about the whole active ride page debate. I think its a waste of words. Punishing members who restored, reconditioned, customized or whatnot rides that they then sold for whatever reason? Again, that’s a very shortsighted… MASSIVE FAIL.
-
Is the effort that went into the ride a waste? Was it worthy and notable then Poof… clean slate? No history of accomplishments?
-
I think that notion is BULL SHIT.
-
I save Firebirds and other rides I’m interested in. I have bought them after being neglected and done what the assholes who previously owned them should have done, then I did more to them. I don’t have a large budget, am a family man and only have a few spots available. I like working on cars and bringing them back… sometimes I make money. Most of the time I just about break even when labor is not factored in, so I say to you that notion of prohibiting sold rides is asshole talk so knock it the hell off.

I to think that only rides you currantly own should be displayed on CD. I have pictures of every car I have ever owned and it would take up way to much space on the server .There are other sites not as big where you can display your other rides. CarDomain has gotten so big that I think that in it’s self causes a big problem, when something go’s wrong it really go’s wrong.

I really hate the idea of rewarding people with high ratings or showing any sort of preference to those rides….. it is one thing for ratings to mean absolutely nothing, it is another to reward people based on these random stars. You bet I’m not going to be happy if someone gets rewarded and I don’t because they have more stars…. but I have more sweat, blood, tears, and years in mine…….

odd… ok
I agree with deleting the rides that havent had any action by the owner for a year or 2…. there are people that posted a pic..saying new pics soon..planning on doing a lot..but never came back to post a pic…. maybe an eviction notice of sorts can be sent out..giving the owners a couple weeks to update or delete..or be deleted.. that would clean out a lot of cars that are taking up space..
down the page.. LunarStrain literally took the thoughts out of my mind..and put them into words on the page..I’ve been thinking the same thing for months and months.. The people who patrol the new rides saying the same copy and paste welcome to everyone who comes to the site.. it’s an easy way to get rated/guestbook comments..
Same subject.. how does someone’s ride get updated every day multiple times.. but nothing new has been done or added to their page for years..(A_K)! still getting comments/ratings..Sinner..lol
I like the new rating deal so far (except dropping from 1st to 3rd place..but I’m not complaining cos there are some that deserve it more than me THAT ARE FURTHER DOWN THE LINE)….noticed that everyone that I’ve already rated..I can rate again..double the opinion?
Only issue I am still having is my personal messages..sent/received are mixed together..and some never showed up all together…not a big deal I’m just happy to have got my pics back!!

FatalSnake
Oct 25, 2009 at 10:38 am
I have also noticed a large amount of vehicles that have been sold and mot updated in months that are taking up space. If that is the case I have owned many cars over the years and I could bombard CD with 8 rides that I don’t even know if they are being driven in the same condition or totaled. My Point being CD should post only currently owned rides and currently updated rides (say 6 months). This would free up a couple gig on your servers and would give a more accurate depiction on the vehicle ratings. Another idea for the new accounts would be to have a first 3 month rating system that is separate from the so called long time users. this might give a smooth transition to the new car without immediately knocking out the long time favorites.
Thanks CarDomain for making a fun site that we can enjoy displaying/talking about our rides. Looking forward to your fixes in the search engines too.

I think it’d be nice to have a counter on votes as well as the number of hits a page gets. I mean I like being able to see that only 100 people have looked at a ride or 10,000 people, but I’d also like to see if only 27 of those 100 or if 8,967 of the 10,000 rated a particular ride. Also, I think someone should have to have a ride listed as well as photos of it to be able to rate other rides. I can’t believe how many users on here can go around here rating rides and posting comments when they themselves don’t have one listed. As for the reworked rating system, it does seem to be improved, at least when it comes to the rides I have on here. I have two cars listed, neither all that great, and to my shock both had 4 star ratings within their first week of being listed and were on the first and second page of that particular make and model of car. Now however, mine are near the last page(which is where they belong). I can only assume a couple guys were very nice and gave them a high rating which rocketed them to the first and second page. Now truth be told I’d love to get my rating up on them, but neither deserve a high rating in their current condition.

P.S. Here’s another idea. How about exposing what people really rate your car?
Nessababy
Oct 24, 2009 at 5:55 pm
Cardomains rating system is the most serious? What the fuck.. (excuse my language) The ratings are nearly a joke.. LOOK AT ALL THE SPAMMERS MAKING 100 ACCOUNTS GIVING YOU ONE STAR.. And then if someone has a personal issue with you.
EXAMPLE: You left a comment saying, “Oh I really liked your car, but the color isn’t my taste.”
Then they downrate you..
The ratings system is a joke on this site. How can someone say it’s the ‘most serious’?
Here’s an idea, How about getting all the spammers off this site instead. Look at my comments its spammed with 1,000 + comments, but you wanna take the ratings system the ‘most serious’. I’ve seen about 5 people delete their accounts because this website is starting to be a joke.5
GTwildfire
Oct 24, 2009 at 5:24 pm
w-wait… exposing the latest ratings on your car… so ratings would be more like a graph. That’s interesting and sounds like a good improvement, but it dosen’t address the tit-for-tat.
-
right?
-
tell us more. We hate to be kept in suspense…
GTwildfire
Oct 24, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Okay, here’s an idea. Leaving a comment or message for someone restricts them from rating your ride for one week. They try and get an “oops, you cannot rate this ride for another 4 days, 5 hours and 55 minutes.
-
Maybe adjust that time to make it more lengthy.
-
To be realistic, I don’t see how “accountability” of any significance can be implemented, aside from some clever stopgaps or safeguards. Not saying my idea is particularly clever, just that there have to be more divisive ways to improve the system.

I agree with so many nof the remarks here so far. The ratings system on many sites has been flawed for years. So has the merits of gaining internet notariety. Begging for kudo’s or begging you to look at a car…doesnt work for many of us. I post, and to draw attention to myself, I do things with pictures of my car….say unique things in my profile…But I don’t activly search for ratings. I don’t beg.
A common comment would be
“Nice ride….check out mine sometime.” Now why would I wanna rush right over and check out the Festiva? Much less rate it? Did he really look at my car? Or is he after some imagined ratings system that will put him squarly in the middle of nothing?
I comment on rides. I look for fit and finish. I wanna see what others have done with thier rides. I look for photography. Yes you can make a rather plebian car look sharp with good skilz. And you dont have to have an expensive camera. (I’ve devoted a page to Phone Pics of cool rides…) Just an eye for how your car looks to you.
I look for content. Do you have a sense of humor? Do you go out of your way to make that Yugo look really cool? Is your car special to you, and do you take the time to present it to the best of your skilz? This is what I rate on. If that person sees fit to respond to my comments, then they will wander to my page by themselves with out me begging them too. Then if they rate my car, they’ve taken the time to actually come and view it without coercian. The vote becomes honest. I understand if they don’t rate, or rate it low. One…its and honest vote. Two….My car isn’t everybodies cup o’ tea. Fair enough.
I hope this new ratings program works out to give more honesty…

I wish i could see what it’s like to register to the CD, just like a new member does again, just so i could somehow see why it says “More info and pics to come soon…hopefully!” on the bottom of my brand new page.

I personally never rate anyone because it means nothing. Especially when people ask for stars, I don’t give them any. They say they put 5 stars on your page, but they just say that. There is no way to know that they did or if they just trick you into rating theirs.
The rating system needs some method of accountability. There needs to be a way to prevent the hate rating that some people just love to spread. Like if we could see who voted what, people wouldn’t go around putting 1 star on there or you’d be able to see if they gave you 5 stars. Something…..
And I think it is dumb to limit the number of categories for voting. We should be able to have as many categories as we want, not just 5.
It seems my page, ratings and all are fine… thanks.
Just the search and related rides are messed up.

I would really have to agree with PureBusiness’ idea of a some type of write-up or walk-through of how exaclty CD works, how to rate, what SOTW means, just all the basic things for a member to know. I have noticed that there have been new members that will comment back to other members, but on their own ride page. I believe with some type of walk-through(video maybe) that it would make CD a much more new user freindly site, and encourage new users to become much more active in the CD community.

I like the new changes to Car Domain, but I would really like my Guestbook fixed so it includes all the comments that I had, including any new comments that I have received since the migration. I had 20 comments on the newest car in my profile prior to the migration and now I only have 9! Not to mention some of my friends that I had are no longer listed. Hopefully the bugs get worked out soon.

Maybe we could put together a member written statement of introduction for the newbies, that would have been really cool, too me anyway.I would have understood better about what it is to be a member, and stuff!

I never really quite got the rating system. I love my cars, should it really matter what others think of them? To some it may, but I love my cars the way that are.

I found a solution to the rating problem, and that’s just to not vote unless there’s a really cool car with a cool owner that does the deserve the 5*’s! I usually wait a couple of days or weeks before I rate them to see if they’re active members. People begging to vote for their cars got really annoying and that’s why I stopped giving ratings.
.
And we can be here all we want pitching ideas on how to make it better but at the end of the day we are not going to be able to stop all those people begging for stars or downgrading your rating (happen to me 4 times and got as low as 2 stars) because they want to be on the shiny page 1 and so on and so fort. So I say let’s just vote (those who are serious about the star deal) on cars that are deserving of it and are active members of this site.

Let me add this.Back when you could make a pole question on your site(for those of you that didn’t know about that)i posed-What is your favorite thing about the Car Domain and how many cars have you rated? The results after about a 100 responses came back a little better than i anticipated. Overwhelmingly of those that took the time to answer had said it was the “People” and that they had rated about “30+” sites.. not bad!

why do i see the same “related rides” every time i am on my own page? is that going to stay like that or is it just a bug in the new system? i liked seeing all other related ride years. not just the same year ride you are currently on.

I too believe the new rides should be noticed, but that is what the “Newest Rides” section on the CD homepage is for.

The new system ok I guess, but I still think everyone needs their 15mins of fame when they start off so more people will get to see their ride and not just those who give out 5* to anything that has four wheels. I guess what I’m saying is if those first couple 5* don’t atleast put your ride on the 1st page, for me the chances of your ride getting noticed go down alot because looking through pages gets boring after a while.

RE: PureBusiness
I have come across some profiles before that have 3, 4, and 5 very high end rides with pictures that look like they came straight off the internet with copy and paste stats. only if there were a way to validate the car is actually owned by that person…….

I think lots of you guys miss the whole point of showing your cars , Its all about opinions , jesus i wish you guys would step out of that stupid mentality “If someone doesn’t give me 5 Stars its because he’s a hater (Lame excuse) He’s just jealous!
DUHHH Sure there will be some people that will downvote your car by pure jealousy.. but that’s not what the majority of people do ..
Just because you think your Honda civic look good with thoses Flashy neons and awful bodykit doesn’t mean everyone have to think like you. .
Cardomain now is kinda like Myspace
“hey hi , nice pics come check out mines”
“Oh 5 Stars for your car.. now come to my page and gimme 5 stars too”
Seriously im tired of people that spend their time looking at new ride and spam the same old shit again..
(Ex : andersen_knight )
Seriously if you want vote , stop forcing them to look at your page , otherwise you will get lots of downvote .
I Really love Cardomain for the blog and some of the cars but thats about it .. theres a lots of nice people out there but they are overshadowed by dumbasses
“Hey guys im a take a pic of me holding lots of money , gotta show the people i have money , because being Humble is SO not cool ”
PS: English is my second language so my apolagies for typos and such.

Just wanted to chime in.
Loving all the comments and suggestions.
One thing I wanted to touch on was the idea of giving new rides a few minutes of fame. I agree 100% that new rides need a showcase that lets them introduce themselves with a bit of pinash. However I think there are better ways to do this than allow someone to bribe a few friends to quickly 5 star. Look for something a bit more natural coming along.
As far as ratings. We are tossing around a lot of ideas and everything mentioned in your comments so far is certainly getting thrown in the hat.
Also you may only rate a ride once. You can ‘re-rate’ the ride but it will replace your old rating.. not add a new on. We will also be looking into anyone who creates accounts with the sole purpose of bumping or dumping a ride when they already have an account.
Just a few teasers.. thanks again for all the input!

The other stuff? You have any idea the amount of data that moves in and out of CarDomain? That pipeline isn’t free and the staff gotta be able to afford… to drive. Goodbye advertising and hello membership fees, then goodbye CarDomain.

I have said it before, and will say it again. Why don’t you save bandwidth and delete rides that have not been updated in 5 years or more. That may help.

I use to blindly trust that all of these cars were real cars that were owned and operated by a actual person..boy was i wrong. There is alot to consider when rating stuff here on the CD. Like,is this a car site that was net-jacked from E-bay,appraisal pages, wheel stores, sales reps,a racist, etc. You guys know what i mean,Right?

I like the new system a lot, my ride jumped to #3 in it’s catagory.
I have also notice what md3rdgen was saying, there are a ton of people that post their rides in the wrong catagory. Like some Ford Ranger Edge guys post their rides in the Ford Edge catagory, or the Taurus SHO guys post their rides in the Taurus Rides instead of the Taurus SHO catagory. It’s a little problem, but just thought I’d bring it up. Anyway the upgrades are going good and as always I appreciate this site and all of the content on it, and most of all how it stays free. Thanks!

does the ammount of views your page has play any effect the ranking at all? say 100 people visit a cars page but only 75 of them give a star rating does the other 25 views (that did not rate) effect the rank of where that ride will stand?

CarDomain, like any major site HAS TO go through transitions like this. It is inevitable, and development – despite lengthy and careful planning runs into problems when site mods go live. CD is approaching 700,000 rides in its ridepage inventory. That’s a mind-boggling amount of content, and that’s just ride pages. Give ‘em time, guys. They’ll smooth things out. They created the site in the first place and brought it this far, right?
-
As far as ratings are concerned, I noticed the way ratings behaved long ago. It was flawed and many seeking to promote rides they introduced make the rounds to other ride pages as part their enthusiasm of just having joined, or getting attention for their new ride if they’re an established member (many, maybe most folks do this to one extent or another, as I have in the past).
-
The longer term irons out a ride’s ratings when everyone else who rates it weigh in. In a way, the system as it was… worked, in that newer rides had 15 minutes of fame then either dropped to relative obscurity or had more buoyancy to stay higher in the list.
-
At the same time, having sunk a tuition-sized wad of cash and effort into a ride, only to have it shoved down by an un-reconditioned high-miler must’ve upset more than a few people over the years.
-
I think that a long-term consideration should take into account an introduction mode of some sort to help newer rides to get noticed and get the ratings ball rolling for them. The current system showing a rolling bar of new ride thumbnails is not an effective way to call attention to them. It’s too isolated and by balling up all additions on a sort of conveyor belt of tiny thumbnails, nobody has confidence their addition is getting attention.

Well i still upset. My truck was number 2 for almost a week or so and was rated almost 5 stars (was showing as 4.5) now im down to three stars and at the bottom of the list…Sucks major.I must agree with 65stangGuy And even worse theres ppl with vehicles that shouldnt be in the category they are in. Like one guy has a GMC 4500 with the 3500s. Not being a d*ck but i think he should be moved to the 4500s.Now another person has a boat listed. Thats just ridiculous. CarDomain u cant be serious. *To all that may have been offended i did not intend to do such i was just trying to get my point across* BTW Come check out my 99 GMC 3500 dually i’ve got some major plans for her here soon. PLease sure to give me a good rating and ill do the same for u…

7 months ago my 65 mustang was in the top 10 of all the ford mustangs on the site and hung in there for about 4 months. in a matter of 3 days my 65 dropped into the deep 600′s or worse. how is that even possible? just in the past few weeks its got back up to the first page of mustangs again. was that a result of hate raters giving 1 star over and over again? can you rate one ride more than one time and give the same star rating?

I still think Car Domain,Rating stuff and showing my work is Fun.I like that you are working to fix the rating problem.I remember how it was discouraging to a few people i can remember that didn’t understand how a new guy could rocket to the top ride position only to fall off the charts and into the ditch a few hours later.
I should count my blessings that i recovered from the CD renovations unscathed(Lucky Me!)but, i am sorry to all that have lost a great deal of their pages.I wonder what the new people from the past week think and if they can weather the storm and hang in there.
