Hemmings Find of the Day: 1948 Chrysler Town and Country

By Dan Strohl

Hemmings

So last week at Hershey, we got an earful on the issue of Chrysler Town and Country cars in the Classic Car Club of America. Whatever your position on the issue, there’s no denying that T&Cs are some of the most sought-after and prestigious postwar American cars, especially the convertible versions. So it’s not unusual to find one, beautifully restored with a few personal touches, on Hemmings.com. What is unusual is to find one on Hemmings.com, but physically located in Paris, France. We’re pointed to the seller’s website to find out how it found its way in the land of Simcas and Renaults. Continue reading at Hemmings

Crazy Cars

By Ron Honig

WaytooFurious

Unfortunately I have been stuck at home for the past few days. All I can say is thank God for the internet, otherwise I would have been climbing the walls by now. No matter how many channels you have, TV just sucks during the day. While I was surfing the net I came across a bunch of wacky cars including this little gem. Check them out at the Herald Sun. You may have seen some of these previously but nonetheless it has some interesting stuff.

Classic Corvette Commercials

By Michael Berenis

Tampa Sports Car Examiner

“They call her Corvette, and she belongs to the highways.” The Chevrolet Corvette throughout automotive history has represented the finest in American performance. Known for high power, low profiles, and the most exciting ride you will ever experience, the Corvette dominates the American performance scene. The name comes from a ship design named “corvette.” This unique ship was small, fast, and could out handle other ships of its time. The modern Corvette lacks cannons, salt-cured meat, grog, a crew of 60 seamen and sails, but still holds some qualities of the original ship. Precise handling, untouchable speed, and unique appearance are still common traits shared between the ship and modern automobile.

Corvette propaganda has always been interesting to watch. “They built her to handle like an angel…” as the first 1953 video suggests below. This is totally true! Whether you are a fan of the Corvette or not, take time to enjoy the following footage. Learn more about Corvette classic commercials at Tampa Sports Car Examiner.

Fireball's "Cool Designs of the Week!"

By Fireball Tim

Movie Car Design Master

Ok, here we go. Ok… wait a second. I need to take a breath on this one. As I do this, I contemplate one of my soccer coaches saying “be one with the ball, Fireball.” So… “I’m being one with the post.” Ok, think I’m ready now…

CARS!!!!!!! WOOOHOOOOOOO!!!!! (Breath) Welcome to another edition of Fireball’s CDW! That “Cool Designs of the Week” for those that have not been affected by my unfortunate condition. I have a terminal illness called “CARdio MyCOOLopathy.” It’s contagious, just so you know. And gets worse every day. Side affects include excessive salivation surrounding sculptured form, eyeball extension involving potential speed and alien bursting chest pain in regards to voluptuous lines. No, I’m not talking about your girlfriends, (although if that were true, what lucky men you’d be) I’m talking about this week’s cool rides.

Oh, an one more thing. As with most weeks, I threw in a few not so cool rides. In the profession, we call them “Suckassters.” I’m just sayin…’ OK!

1. THE ASTON MARTIN VOLARE

Aston-Martin-Volare

Ooooo. Knees are quivering. And I’m pretty sure that there’s a cold shower in my near future. A proportionally perfect dynamo of glistened metal. A blissful combination of God induced form. Yea, it’s nice, in a whole Goddess Genevieve just told you that she’s in love with you and will never have another …sort a way. Mmm…

Throwing Down the Gauntlet: The 'Maximum Bob' Lutz Cadillac CTS-V Challenge

By Rich Truesdell

Automotive Traveler

GM’s Bob Lutz is staking the Cadillac CTS-V against all-comers as part of General Motors “May the Best Car Win” advertising challenge. Automotive Traveler is up to the challenge and takes him up on his offer (as does Jalopnik, The Truth About Cars, Autoblog, and others!)

The Cadillac CTS is in the opinion of this reviewer, a world-class luxury car, a clear case where GM set the development bar high against its intended competition, and in most regards, exceeded expectations. Clearly, offering a class-competitive entry closer in size and power to a BMW 5 Series while priced closer to a 3 Series was a smart positioning move. This was followed by the introduction of the mammothly-powered CTS-V, with a 556-horsepower engine that would set at the time a production sedan lap record at the Nürburgring of 7:59:32 (anything under eight minutes is damn fast). The CTS-V clearly had the BMW M5 in its crosshairs and its time to tell the automotive world that America had finally came to play with the big dogs. Now, how to get this message across? Thus the CTS-V Challenge at the Monticello Motor Club 90 miles north of New York City. If GM invites us to the party where we plan to show up in a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. Read more about our challenge, and the course layout at Automotive Traveler.

Caption Contest: This Week's Winner!

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

For the last two days, it’d been raining here in La La Land. Apparently, this is an incredibly rare occurrence, because it was the only thing anyone could talk about. The fact that it’s so rare was particularly comforting to me because first, multiple days of drizzle is not what I moved from Seattle to experience, and second, at about four AM Tuesday, I discovered that the ceiling in my room leaks. Good times. But enough about not-so-sunny California, let’s get down to business. Now, most of the time, I have a hard time making a decision about a winner—but this one couldn’t have been easier. This week, the big bag of swag goes to _VeTeX_, who came up with; “I’ll call you back. I’m going into a tunnel.” _VeTeX_, tea actually came out my nose when I read your submission. Bravo! Tune in tomorrow for the next installment of our wicked-awesome Caption Contest!

Ken Block to Compete in World Rally Championship!

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

Talk about big news: Gymkhana virtuoso Ken Block is heading to World Rally Championship. But since Subaru has dropped out of the series, he’ll be joining the Monster Ford team and piloting a 2009-spec Ford Focus WRC. Personally, I can’t wait to see how he does against some of the best drivers on the planet, because while playing paintball and smashing florescent lightbulbs with Rob Dyrdek—as he did in the underwhelming Gymkhana Two Infomercial—is a well and good, I prefer drivers to be judged by how fast they can complete a circuit, rather than how pretty they look doing it. Hopefully, Block’s pop culture status will make the fans who’ve so rabidly consumed his internet exploits tune into the WRC, which has been looking to get one of its Pilotis into the door of the lucrative US market. Check out the video below for some footage of Block and new teammate Chris Atkinson behind the wheel of a ’78 Ford Escort MK2, and stay tuned for info on how he fares in his first race.
