Electric Beauty: Porsche 912 EV at SEMA

It’s a 1976 912 packing 85 3.3v lithium ion batteries. They power a NetGain Warp11 DC motor, which puts go to the wheels via an original Porsche 5-speed transmission. Built by Sunshine State Restorations in consultation with the Tallahassee Area Electric Vehicle Association. The overall effect? An ultra-clean classic EV. See more…

batteries are like ballast. they at least offer the opportunity to balance a car perfectly. Just a matter of whether that’s practical or not.

My first take on this is that having the original transmission in there and the torque on meth that motor must deliver… where could the acceleration possibly top off?

My second thought is that by keeping the original trans, there’s a weight penalty, and with the motor’s ultra high RPMs, are all the original gears even necessary? I seriously doubt it needs more than two speeds unless the driver wants to try and create a sonic boom.
