Muscle Car Sales Boom Against All Odds

By Brian Lohnes

Everyone, it seems, even the auto company executives themselves, is perplexed as to why sales of cars like the Mustang, Camaro, and Challenger continue to troop onward and upward when the rest of new car sales slump. Why would people be driving cool, powerful, fun to drive cars? What would attract a buyer to a car that stands out from the crowd, allows owners to compete at the race track in, and has great looks and sound?

Maybe some guy working in the basement of one of the domestic auto companies will churn out some massive spread sheet that comes to the stunning conclusion that people don’t really want to buy bland junk.

When you read the quotes from the guys that work for Chevy in this Wall Street Journal story you’ll probably be as frustrated as we were.

Viva la muscle!

It’s the same story as it was in the mid ’80s. People are getting tired of driving torqueless boringly styled econoboxes again. Muscle cars appeal to baby boomers and the young generation alike. They have learned to evolve with the times while keeping the same basic formula. I think people wanna be different, and also own a car that can actually pass something other than a moped. Muscle cars may never be as efficient as the over rated hybrids being sold, but they will always be more fun. No guy in his right mind wants to pass off a Prius to his son. He dreams of leaving him a Mustang, Camaro, Challenger, etc. I just hope the bean counters across the globe realize that once Americans get used to fuel prices again, they’ll be back to buying power hungry guzzlers. All I got to say is… Vroom!!! bub, bub, bub, bub…. Man, I love the sound of a big block in the morning!!!
