Toyota Owners: Big Recalls Abound
Atomicalex
Wow. That’s all I have to say about this recall. Over four million Toyota and Lexus vehicles need to return to the local motherships for the accelerator pedal problem. Dealers are being told to cut the pedal so that it can’t interfere with the floor mat, which should have already been removed or restrained (with a ziptie) by now. Please, please, please go to your dealer and have this work done – the last thing any of us here at CarDomain want to hear is that a sweet ride like DumpedCorolla‘s ended up in a wall. Toyota remains mum on the idea that there could be a serious software fault contributing to the problem. A full list of cars in the recall after the jump.

Has anybody who has wrecked actually thought of turning off the ignition to stop the engine from accelerating? Seriously?!? That’s like driver’s ed 101 right there… Sure, stressful situation, but these people who are getting up over 120mph who have time to call 911 and scream at them for 5 minutes surely would have had enough time to at least attempt to turn the ignition off… unless Toyota cars have some built in thing that doesn’t allow it?
I still also find it really bizarre that Toyota doesn’t have a brake override in their ECU, which cuts throttle if the brake is applied at the same time as the gas. My cheap little 2002 Nissan Sentra has it (well, had it back in the day, before I got rid of it), so I find it really weird that Toyota, who is suppose to be the king of everything, doesn’t have this simple feature in their ECUs. At least that’s what I’ve been hearing on the news that Toyota doesn’t have this feature, but plans on maybe putting it in sometime…
The bottom line to me… this is when I don’t like all the electrical nonsense controlling crap in cars nowadays. Too many things to go hirewire.

Gotta looove that Toyota perfection, right up till they couldn’t continue resisting the heat they were taking from all sides.

and still, it looks like they’re doing a smoke ‘n mirrors act, blaming the pedal design and dismissing other accounts, some where the gas pedal wasn’t even being touched by the driver. Guess that’s the magic floormat theory and tough crap for those who encountered it and fear their Toyotas.

Not saying other auto makers are saints with stuff like this… but Toyota has set high standards for itself and that means the fall from grace is harder. Lives depend on them doing what’s right and not just covering their butts while denying legitimate claims.
