Back to the Future

Danz Custom of Menasha, Wisconsin built this ‘69 Camaro in 2006 to look like the Camaro concept that finally made it to production in 2010. Trippy, huh? More pics and the statement from the builder after the jump. Via carpictures

This is a 1969 Danz Camaro SS concept car. I built the car in 2006. In 2006 the new Camaro was just a concept with no definite plans to go to production. I took a real 1969 Camaro and modified it to look some what like the 2006 concept Camaro. Thinking that I would have the only one in the world if the Camaro never went to production. I combined the original 69 Camaro design with the 2006 concept Camaro design, with my own designs. Especially the hood scoop and rear spoiler design are my own. I gave GM pictures of my car in Jan 2007. It appears that the 2010 SLP Camaro has a simular designed hood scoop and rear spoiler to my car. To power my car I went with a 427 small block with the vintage dual 4-barrel crossram manifold and carbs. I went in that direction because I wanted the legendary 427 cubic inch and also to use the vintage dual 4-barrel crossram. Backed with a 700 r transmission to a Ford 9″ differential. Well to each his own, I guess… Now that I’ve said that, this is just disgusting. The car is hideous, and he also ruined a classic car to make this monstrosity. Noone should be allowed to do such a thing. He obviously has the money, why couldn’t he modify a new Camaro into this?

I will be fair to this guy… as I did see this car in person. The Craftsmanship is very well done, as is the paint. I understand what he was after, however, he made the car look like more of a characturture of the actual car. A lot more “Car-Toony” if you will. The front end is a bit overdone and the rear looks like an upside down tail of a ‘70′1/2 Camaro. The wheels just don’t work at all. And the vinyl top? I think that ages the car rather than adds appealing Retro quality. I applaud the effort, but I guess I just ask why is all. Merging the two cars doesn’t quite work out too well here. B+ for effort, C- for execution, B+ for craftsmanship.

They ruined that perfect 69 trying to make it look like the ugly ‘10. Did succeed in making it ugly, though. Can they save it and revert it back?

It does look rad, but it bums me out that a 40 year old classic was sacrificed.

“427 small block” Legendary 427. No engine pics, so no clue if he has a big bloc or small block in that thing. One would think he’d want to go 327…

Pretty damn slick if you ask me. I’m not some ultra “gotta keep everything stock” type of Jimbo. I love creativity. and i love the Camaro.

RareT, cobaltdrver07, and every one else that nit picked this car. Shut the hell up. This guy built it from scratch. YES, It is a bit out of proportion and the vynl roof doesnt really go with the car, So what! At least he isnt one of those morons that pitch classic cars to the junk yard or a cash for clunkers “Go Green” scam designed only to remove V8 cars. People built crazy cars all the time that really dont look good at all. Some are even factory (Scion XB, Nissan Cube, ect.) This guy did a good job for building it from scratch. Nothing on this car is so rediculous that he should be ridiculed for it. It is a great idea, just out of proportion, and the angle on these pictures makes the proportions a bit worse than they are. Read the article linked to this and you will see better picture. If you read through, alot of people love this car, as I am sure the builder does, and that it kinda the point. As long as it appeals to someone there will always be an audience for it. And if you cant appreciate the hard work and inginuity that went it to this then you should beat with a stick and sent back to preschool.

I’m not a hater…. but that is just wrong, is done wrong and it looks wrong. The proportions are not adequate, the lines angles are completely surreal, it reminds me of the “Monkees GTO” funny looking but not cool.
I’m not against modern restorations, but it’s gotta be done right.
Check out this 1970 Mustang for example:

This car is awesome , i haven’t seen a car that really got me psyched like this in a long time. i think he captured a perfect blend of modern and classic camaro. i DONT think anyting that was suggested to be changed should be. This guy didn’t build this car to be a production vehicle nor a concept of a production vehicle, he just captured camaro history in one vehicle and did it very well.

I think it looks pretty good. I don’t care too much for the pointy front and the bulky rear end, but it still looks pretty bad ass.

first off, great job with all the work and labor that went into the car. The paint and bodywork looks amazing. Now as far as the 69/10 look, not so good. Im going to agree with RareT and Coboltdriver07. It looks like Jay Leno and J-Lo had a car baby.

The hoodscoop is too big, the taillight pairs are too far from each other, the front end is too pointy, the rear end is too bulky, it should never have a rust trap, vinyl top. One more thing: why are the front lights round, the rear lights and exhaust round, and yet the side lights are rectangular? I know they are original, but they don’t mix with this car. Great attempt, but it misses the mark. I’ll take the ‘09 model or the ‘69 model.

A little pointy at the front, but it looks way better than the new one. The new one is too big, and tall.

i completely agree with cobaltdriver07, it just doesn’t look right. Its almost like the whole body is out of proportion, with a massive front end, skinny sides, and a huge (ugly) rear end. Now i know this was before the production car was made, and is based off the concept, but i feel his time was wasted. all the money he spent could’ve gone toward the production car instead of this atrocity. Or he could’ve just made a nice resto-mod.

WOW now that is freaky. I scrolled by this twice thinking it was yet another of the latest version. Quick glances don’t always work in the CD BLOG, LOL…

The doors and roof line were the headsmacker. I really am in awe with this transformation, and the very unique idea of taking an original and updating it to look a newer version of itself…

The nose & grille are awesome. Incredible job overall.

this camaro is absolutely hideous they ruined a classic dont get me wrong i love the new camaro and the 69 camaro but thats what they should stay as two seperate entities not merged together they completely screwed the whole concept up the grill and well the entire nose for that matter looks completely ridiculous for god sake the car looks like it has a damn chin and the ass end looks like they chopped off a boat and added tail lights to it. leave th camaros as they are new and classic not a hybrid of the two although i can appreciate the time and effort and money put in to making this ride but to me it wasnt done right at all and honestly the two should never be combined in to one thats why we have modern and classic to differentiate the two even though the new camaro has stylings of the 69. i dont know this is just my opinion but im sure some of you guys out there will agree with me to a degree.
