At the beginning of this video, two cars are lined up and getting ready to drop the hammer on the freeway. Pretty standard, right? Well, just before the action starts, and out-of-control car slides into the shot and ruins everything. Yikes!

I can remember it like it was yesterday. It was the mid 80s, I was in the prime of my youth and on my first day at Deakin University. I was in a queue signing up for courses with no real idea of what I wanted to do. There were two stunning girls ahead of me who told me that they were signing up for the journalism course. So guess what I did? Yep, I followed my hormones and  signed up for the same course. Unfortunately I didn’t get the girls but I did complete my BA with a minor in journalism, so it wasn’t all bad. I did enjoy the course but I realized that doing something like following the crime beat or political reporting just wasn’t my thing. If only someone had mentioned car magazines to me. Well here I am 20 something years later and I finally have my very own four page magazine spread. If you live in my part of the world (Australia) get down to your local newsagent and check out the latest issue of Chrysler Action magazine. It’s a great magazine because it is larger than most and is printed on thick glossy paper. By the way my article starts on page 28 and covers the Chrysler show held recently at Caribbean Gardens. Also if you are a car magazine editor and you need something covered in this part of the world just drop me a line.

Jay Leno Gets the Scoop on McLaren's MP4-12C!

When Jay Leno appeared on Top Gear, Jeremy Clarkson called him the “world’s biggest petrolhead,” which is high and deserved praise for the former Tonight Show host. Leno probably knows more about cars than most of the people paid to work on them or write about them, so it’s always fun to watch when he gets serious about his favorite subject. Check out this clip where he heads over to McLaren’s Technical Centre in Woking, England and get’s the scoop on the company’s new MP4-12C.

Daytona in the Barn: The Field, Part Deux

Walking back in the thick of cars, right in front of me is a 68 Chrysler 300 2-door. It was a beautiful car at one time. Blue with a black top I believe. That would have been one heck of a cruiser back then. I don’t know what kind of engine was in there, but could have been a 440.

1957 Chevy Sedan Delivery on eBay

This week’s eBay find is a totally awesome 1957 Chevy sedan delivery. According to our research, this is one of 8,300 examples constructed by Chevy in 1957. These cars were extremely popular in NHRA Jr. Stock eliminator and were actually the lightest variant of the 150-series Chevys in 1957.

The car in the auction we found is totally intact, but does not appear to be a runner. No worries there, the biggest thing is that this is a complete car and not some basket case that was hauled out of someone’s basement. Chevy called this body style a “Utility Sedan” and ths shipping weight was 3,168 pounds, placing it about 60 pounds lighter than the normal two-door 150 Chevy.

In the 1960s, Junior Stock was the designation given to the lower (and slower) Stock eliminator classes. These particular cars were great for those classes becase the NHRA actually considered them trucks. Because of that, racers could install truck equipment, like the four-speed Hydramatic auto transmission. With a hot small-block, that transmission (in place of a cast iron case Powerglide) and better weight transfer and traction that virtually any other combo, these babies were the hot number. We’d love to see someone buy this and build a period correct racer out of it!

Hemmings Find of the Day – 1987 Modena Design Ferrari

After first coming across the Russo and Steele listing on Hemmings.com of this 1987 Modena Design Ferrari California Spyder, we thought we could add to what TA had already mentioned the other day regarding the Ferris Bueller replica Ferraris. Alas, as TA points out, the movie came out in 1986, a year before Modena Design and Research began their business (according to the Russo and Steele text). TA also notes that Mark Goyette, who built the three for the movie, sold his tooling to Precision Design. So as best we can tell, Modena Design had nothing to do with the Ferris Bueller cars, and the confusion stems from the fact that Goyette (who started building replicas in 1985) called his replicas the “Modena Spyder.”

This past month we’ve seen a whole slew of automobiles dropped to insane lowness. This Miata is no different. This car is like the crispy cornered pieces of brownies that only a select few actually enjoy. And just like any good brownie recipe, the best ones are always the most simple. 

Let’s be honest here: this car is as Mazda OEM stock as possible. The engine still retains the stock 1.6L. The exterior additions to this car has been a Mazda OEM front R-Package lip, rear R-package lip, and a OEM hardtop painted glittery silver. Really, the only things not stock is the now rare RSR GTII ExMag exhaust system, Jackson Racing Header and the Boss Frog roll bar. Continue reading at Speedhuners
