Differential Goes Out With a Bang!

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

Here’s another reason why it’s smart to give drag cars a little breathing room. Just after the driver manages to plant the tires, the differential explodes and pops straight out of the car. Sucks to be the owner, but at least no pieces landed in anyone’s skull…

That could have ended badly! At least it dropped clean, could have been worse for the spectators. Ouch!

First off, that wasn’t a Camaro. Second, to answer VWLarry’s question (BTW, I’m a lurker over at VW Vortex, congrats on talking to “Jay”!) this looks to be the land of OZ- I’m guessing that’s a Holden or Chrysler, and thus is part of an Australian sanctioning body. What may have happened is that when the pinion escaped the pumpkin, it shot forward and broke the output shaft from the transmission, and then slid out when the car rolled forward. All a loop would do is prevent a car from pole-vaulting during a run.
Interesting video, though.

Good old high-speed comeapart. Was this NHRA, or what sanctioner? I thought that most classes in NHRA were required to use a driveshaft strap(s) to contain it when it decides to go for a walk.
