Ranchero vs El Camino: Which Would You Choose?

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Welcome to the first eBay Motors Showdown of 2010! For this installment we have two Detroit classics from the late 70s, both with awesome two-tone paint schemes. The ’77 El Camino is probably a bit more rough than the ’78 Ranchero, but El Caminos tend to command more money, so I thought it was fair. Plus the old school slots are way cool. Anyway, check out the auctions and then let us know: which would you choose?

im a major elco fan and this is prob one of the worst years for body style but it still blows away the ranchero by a long shoot

Well, I am normally a Ford fan, but that year of the Ranchero is ugly. So I’ll go with the El Camino!

I would probably drive either one, both would make a good daily driver with a better paint job.

I love both vehicles, but I’m not a big fan of either of these model years, so I think I’ll do something uncalled for. I’d like to add a third vehicle to the matchup. It may be FWD, but it’s still part car, part truck. It’s a 1984 Dodge Rampage!! Only things I’d change with is remove the vent shades and fender vents. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1984-Dodge-Rampage-Cool-Little-Truck-No-Reserve_W0QQitemZ300382825464QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Cars_Trucks?hash=item45f0362bf8

Jan 7, 2010 at 1:05 pm

Tough call, I’m going to have to go with the Ranchero strictly because I’m a Ford guy and they’re both too ugly to actually want.

IN REPLY TO “RICETICKET”….. Stop being a jealous hater! I am not hurting you in any way, so mind your own damn business. You can rally people to give me 1 star ratings if it helps you sleep at night. Who really cares what my rating is on Cardomain, I have 17 trophies on a shelf at home that says my car is just fine the way it is.

I would need to go with the GT – my brother has her twin without the scoop or buckets (he has the bench seat), and it is a great truck.

“moparcrazy69″ is here too asking for SOTW??! Are you going to go all over cardomain and advertise your car like a mopar whore? That guy needs a major downgrade of a 1 star bashing

Legacy_camaro
Jan 6, 2010 at 8:37 pm

if were talking flat out speed or muscle, the ranchero has a freaking 460 big block, i mean come on. maybe if the camino was an SS it would compete better with it. i might have to go ford on this one. don’t get me wrong i love the el camino, but nither truck was really in its prime during those years. i choose the one with the bigger engine hahaha.

Ranchero. “El Camino” conjures up images of tall-boy swilling Kid Rock wannabes. The Ranchero is for the guy who has to haul work supplies to the job site- I vote Ranchero.

RavenAegis45
Jan 6, 2010 at 5:33 pm

Well after looking at both there EBay pages I’d have to go with the Ranchero, Just cuz its that much cleaner both inside and out, But I still love El Comino’s. Even the name just sounds cool lol

The Ford;It can haul more and it looks better doing it.

I dig the swivel seats in the El Camino, and the fuel economy gauge is such a throwback to the 70′s, but I will be picking the Ranchero as it is in much better shape and packing a big block. Plus, its a Ford.

johncoyle206
Jan 6, 2010 at 11:21 am

The Ford is in much better shape, I have to admit. But I’m a Chevy guy, and the el Camino has better lines and a 350, so I’m going with the bow-tie. And how awesome is its fuel economy gauge? Got to love it.

El Camino all the way. Even though I grew up riding around in the back of my friend’s 77 Ranchero GT (two tone ugly brown!) I still have to go with the El Camino!
