2011 Mustang Still a Bargain
By Rob Einaudi

The 300 hp V6 Stang will start just under $23k, including destination charges, and the new 412 hp 5.0 GT will be priced just over the $30k mark, including destination charges. See the full PDF at The Mustang Source.
Which reminds me of the Mustang conversations I had with the Ford guys at NAIAS. J Mays told me that they have already started preliminary work on the 50th anniversary Stang for 2014. He said he’d like to see the car shrink down a bit and told me that IRS would be “logical” for the next generation pony car. Regarding the current generation Mustang, Mays said we can expect more special editions, though he refused to be specific when I asked him about Boss Mustangs, Bullitt Mustangs and the Mach 1.

We also had a chance to talk to Robert Gelardi, who designed the interior of the 2010 car, along with much of the cool stuff on the new 2011 5.0, including the beautiful 5.0 engine bay. Robert gave us the grand tour of the GT California Special, which has several cool features like the carbon fiber dash and seat inserts. Robert owns a Sunset Gold Metallic 2010 car (I thought he would own a Bullitt, since he designed that, too). He came home from the hospital in a gold 60s Mustang, so that color has always been special to him. Now he just has to figure out how to drop the new 5.0 in there.
Finally, we talked to Steve Ling, the main marketing guy behind the Mustang. Steve is really pumped up about the V6 cars. He thinks it will be a real hit with enthusiasts, and is particularly excited about the availability of the Track Pack on this car. In fact, he was asking us for ideas of what standard feature they could remove from new Mustang to make an even more affordable and appealing enthusiast package. I like the way Ford is thinking these days!

It’s good to see the lowdown on this. Team Mustang clearly isn’t taking any breaks these days. J. Mays might not be talking about the Boss, but I have a good feeling it’s on the way. Ford gave the silent treament back in ’05 about what was then rumors about the return of a Shelby to the lineup. I think it’s also good that Ford is getting an early start on the 50th anniversary edition. Some may not remember, but the Silver Anniversary Stangs were kind of an afterthought 2 decades ago. Thankfully, since then, Ford has been really religious about observing the Mustang’s b-day.
