SLS AMG Barrel Roll: Fake, Still Cool

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

Look, I know it’s possible for cars to drive upside down. But that doesn’t mean I’m ready to buy this clip where Mercedes’ new SLS AMG pulls a barrel roll while blasting through a tunnel. But I really don’t care. I think this is my favorite car on the planet right now, and I’ll basically watch anything that features it and its absolutely gorgeous engine note. So what do you think? Clever fake? Not-so-clever fake?

Mike Simcoe: Going Global with Design at Chevy

By Katherine Helmetag

Atomicalex

“There’s no doubt about it, it’s an amazing place. The history, the ghosts. You know you are somewhere special.” That’s how Mike Simcoe, Executive Director of Design for Chevrolet, describes working at GM Tech Center’s design studios in Warren, MI. Designed by Eero Saarinen at the height of the Atomic Age, the complex is an mid-century masterpiece and a place where design and style invade every view. It’s the perfect place to lead a design renaissance from. Simcoe talked to me about the new global design language for Chevrolet, and no, it does not specify two tail lights on every car. More after the jump.

NAIAS: Walking Around the EcoXperience

By Jim Brennan

UDMan

On the lower floor of the Cobo Hall Convention Center, there was a track (of sorts) that was set up so everyone could pilot an electric (or Hybrid) vehicle. There were many models that were made available by the various manufacturers, even models that were not on sale in the US yet. There were cars from Tango, CT&T, Think, Mitsubishi (which is odd because they didn’t attend the show), Mercedes Benz, Smart, and GM.

NAIAS – A Lick of Mercury

By Matt Wellumson

Neuwerks

Inside (or next to) the Ford booth at NAIAS, exists a small, little known division of Ford Motor company, known as Mercury. A brand most of us relate to our grandparents or older neighbors, more than the live youthful image they attempted with models like the ill-fated Cougar sport coupe.

Feeling like somewhat of an afterthought next to Ford, Volvo, and Lincoln, Mercury featured only three of their current models. Present at NAIAS 2010, are the Milan, Mariner, and Mountaineer. Sadly for those interested in their full size RWD car, the Grand Marquis, it was not present. Could this be the last time we see of Mercury at NAIAS? Time will tell, but at least we got a small taste!

The Story of a Chevelle and A Demolished Dealership

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

We ran into a bittersweet story on SouthtownStar.com about an Illinois man who owns a 1967 Chevelle that he bought brand new from the now demolished Sunrise Chevrolet located in Midlothian, Illinois. Upon hearing that the dealer was closed, he managed to get his car on the property to take some last photos before the wrecking ball flattened the place forever.

The Chevelle is a really georgeous 1967 SS that has been put back to stock condition after living lots of its life with a 500hp, 427ci big-block under the hood. It was nut-and-bolt restored and has scored nearly 980 points on a 1,000-point judging scale. The good news is that the guy still drives the thing.

Lots of car dealerships are going to meet the same fate as Sunrise Chevrolet because they either could not sustain their business, or they had the rug yanked out from under them by the very companies whose products they dutifully sold for decades.

There was a time when a car dealership represented lots of good things. It was a community hub for employment, it was a literal holding yard for all the gearhead desires any car crazy kid harbored, and it was a destination for a dad and his son to go see the new models (even if they weren’t buying) every fall.

Anyone else out there own an original car from a local dealer?

Hemmings

After yesterday’s HFOD, I decided to go looking for an under-$10k two-door on Hemmings.com, just to prove to myself that they do exist, and quickly stumbled upon this one, a 1983 Chrysler Town and Country convertible that looks to be in great shape out in Palm Springs, California. From the seller’s description:

Equipped with air conditioning, power windows & door locks, power top, remote mirrors, AM/FM cassette stereo, cruise control, power seats, digital dash, premium Mark Cross leather, and more… Car had new top installed one year ago.

GT2 Battle at Laguna Seca

By Speedhunters

Car Culture At Large

I might be miles behind the times but I just found this video on the Driftworks forum and was absolutely blown away by these last few laps in the ALMS GT2 class at Laguna Seca between Jorg Bergmeister and Jan Magnussen. I’ll be making a point of following this series in 2010.

The main question is, who do you think was right or wrong on the last corner of the last lap?
