NAIAS: China Carmaker BYD on the Main Floor with a Hybrid
By Jim Brennan
UDMan
You know things in Detroit are depressing when a small Chinese car builder is taking up premium space on the main floor. BYD is showing off their gas electric hybrid called the F3DM. This car will have the ability to plug in to a standard 110V household current, or it can do a “quick charge” at a charging station. This is more of an electric vehicle than the Prius or Insight hybrids, as it can run about 50 miles on just electric power before the gasoline engine is needed.

Dirty Tesla
Atomicalex
As if we wouldn’t believe them… Telsa decided that the best way to prove their cars are viable transport was to drive one from the factory to Detroit. That’s fine, and the map graphics and driver signatures are cool, but did you have to leave the road salt and dirt all over it?
Mazda 2
Atomicalex
Mazda continues to dominate the small sporty car scene with the 3, and its smaller sibling is on the way. The 2 is coming to a dealer’s lot this summer, and there’s a Mazdaspeed option available – the 2Evil. No details, but who cares – if it’s as good as the Mazdaspeed 3 and weighs 300 pounds less, it’s going to be huge. Metaphorically, of course. Check out the 2 Surf after the jump.
2012 Ford Focus Unveiled at NAIAS
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
The big Ford press conference was all about the new 2012 Focus. This is truly a global car and a huge effort by Ford. The new car will be available as both a hatch and wagon. Power comes from a a new 2.0-liter direct-injected four banger rated at 155 hp and 145 pound-feet of torque. Buyers can select either a 6 speed manual or dual-clutch PowerShift automatic. When I saw the first pics that leaked out I wasn’t that impressed, but it looks sharp in person. More pics after the jump!

Yellow Paint
Atomicalex
Rob and I don’t agree about this yellow paint on the new Mustang 5.0. There’s a long history of yellow Mustangs, and there’s even a fan club for them. I love this pearl yellow, Rob thinks it’s not so hot. Of course, I don’t like the yellow on the Lexus LF-CH, but Rob thinks that works. See another pic of the ‘Stang and a pic of the Lexus nastiness after the jump, and tell us what you think.
Hyundai Equus – What’s That on Your Hood?
Atomicalex
Hyundai continues its push upward with the Equus. Is this news? Not really, especially on the coattails of the Genesis. But what’s up with the flying hood ornament? It looks like a giant bug. But who knows – the car on display has a rather prominent sticker indicating that it’s a prototype, and details are subject to change. Note to Hyundai – I think I’ve spotted something that could do with a change.
