The Dale Brochure in Full
By Dan Strohl
Hemmings
Thanks to Kevin Gibbs, I recently got to pen one of the most interesting stories I’ve written lately. Certainly the strangest. See, Kevin wrote in asking us whether we’d heard of a fiberglass three-wheeled car from 1974-1975 called the Dale – he keeps a scrapbook of such oddities, but had yet to collect photos of one for his scrapbook.
We not only found photos for him, but also a long and sordid story involving scams, men on the run from the feds, and a transsexual. You can read the whole story in the March 2010 issue of Hemmings Motor News, out on newsstands now, but in the meantime, thanks to our friend Geoff Hacker, we have a set of scans from the original Dale brochure. And I do agree, this car was way ahead of its time and needs to be recognized on the CD blog.

Not sure if you saw this link, but it was pretty informative for me. I first learned about the car when I was just passing time looking at classic cars on NADA’s website. Of course, they had all the usual brands listed, a few I’ve kinda heard of, and of course the one that got my attention. I just had to google it, and it took me here: http://www.playboymotorcars.com/

impressive. Why hasn’t it made it into the CD blog? It was ahead of its time.
-
unfortunately being ahead of your time in the automotive industry is a death sentence, as history has shown over and over again.

I’m a little more surprised at that, but maybe it was ahead of its time. If their (playboy) rides weren’t stupid in looks or function and they were made during the popular years of the magazine I’d bet they would’ve lasted 6 years instead of 3.

Never heard of the Dale, but just last week, I learned about a car produced from ’48 to ’51 called the Playboy. Apparently, the magazine of the same name got its title from the defunct car company.

Much of the time I think the names of oddball and/or failed vehicles are part of what did them in.
-
Dale?
-
what the heck is that? I’ll tell ya what it is… a poor-ass name for an offering.
-
well at least it’s better than “Bugazzi”.
