10 Badass Future Collectibles for $20k or Less
By Mike Musto
RideLust.com
Over the last few years values in the collector car market have gone up and down more times then Oprah’s scale. Cars that were once in the six-figures are now in the five-figures with more market flux to come. Buyers who are new to the market can easily become confused and it is very easy to get taken advantage of by sellers who are less than honest.
I get e-mails constantly inquiring as to what cars to pick up as future collectibles. I also get asked my opinion on what the best bang for the buck is amongst these automobiles. After doing a bit of research, I’ve put together a list of automobiles that I would classify as having “future collect-ability”. These are cars that can be purchased right now and are priced between: $8,000 – $20,000.
1. 1983-1984: VW Rabbit GTI
90 hp / 106 ft-lbs tq. 1.8-liter 4 cylinder, Top Speed: 114 mph
What you are looking at here is the first real hot hatch to be brought into the United States. Even though it only had 90 hp, the high-revving GTI was a total blast to drive. It was quick, handled great and looked the business with its signature grill and wheels. Good examples can be had for between: $8,000 – $10,000.

I’m going to kick myself one day for not buying a late 80s Chrysler Conquest or (to a lesser extent) or Mitsubishi Starion. I’ve been saying this for a few years and the market for them seems to be climbing more every year.
RWD, turbo, compact, and good looks. A deadly combination.
Also, a good guide is to follow the trends that rednecks drive.

It’s a good write up, Mike, but I do feel that 5 GM vehicles on a Top Ten list is perhaps just a little biased. There are other vehicles out there that are gaining collectibility. What about the Honda CRX, Ford LTD, or the 80s Turbo Dodges. I especially think that the turbo Dodges ought to be considered. For one, have you ever seen a vehicle with the Shelby name on it not turn out not to be a good investment?? Shelbys are collectible from the day they leave the lot. More and more Shelby fans who are discouraged by Mustang prices are turning to the Chrysler Shelbys. The trickle has been slow, but I’ve seen prices rise over the past year or so. Mopar has made some great cars prior to the Viper. I think of the 80s as a continuation of where they left off in ’73. We had the Omni GLH, Charger GLHS, Shelby Dakota and Daytona all capping it off in ’91 with the Spirit R/T and the Daytona IROC. In case you don’t know much about those last two, they were sleepers to the core, especially the Spirit. It had the title as world’s fastest sedan in ’91 and ’92. Not bad for a ride that evolved from a k-car. In my opinion, the turbo Dodges deserve to be up there as do the Ford LTD and Honda CRX. I can’t find it at the moment, but I assure you, that an article written by Hemmings in 2007 agrees with me totally.
