Fight The Power! And Utah’s Bill to Ban Aftermarket Exhausts

By John Naderi

StreetFire.net

The Specialty Equipment Manufacturer’s Association is best known for its eponymous SEMA Show, but one branch of this automotive aftermarket trade organization is that of modern day Che Guevarra in that they fight for your right to modify your car. SEMA’s Action Network (SAN) brings certain oppressive legislative measures to the attention of people like us, who want to modify their vehicles.

The latest legislative alert, which is currently moving through Utah’s senate floor, proposes to ban any exhaust not “installed by the original manufacturer of the vehicle” regardless of whether it meets DOT, NHTSA and emissions requirements. SAN is calling on us to help fight this bill by contacting the Utah state senators to get them to vote against this bill. C’mon, people, even if you don’t live in Utah don’t allow this to become a precedent for which all other states can cite. Act now. Click here to get more information on the bill.

F*** the government. As I am canadian I can’t write to them either but I whole heartedly support anyone that does because one bill like this passed is just ground work to pass more hanous bills. I hope you are successful and wish you the best of luck. If it unfortuanatley does get passed I vote a 500 vehicle really infront of the utah government building all idiling with loud or no exhaust I’d drive from canada for that

Hey, I am all against the government sticking their nose in what I do with my vehicles, my property, or my personal life.

My question is, why would you liken the Sema Action Network with a homocidal, radical Marxist revolutionary, Che Guevarra? Seems kinda counterintuitive, doesn’t it?

I was about to post this article to my facebook before I saw that.

I would write the Utah Senate but I do not have the right to do so as I am a Canadian citizen but I have read what is trying to be done and I think that there is obviously some hidden agenda. It’s like MopTop said,,,,,,GM discontiued the Pontiac line,,, which in my oppinion was a stupid thing to do so where is he going to get his 76 Trans Am exhaust work done…I have a 1995 Pontiac Sunfire GT and it was going to be $600.00 at a muffler shop to put the stock exhaust in and these guys are one of the most reasonable priced garages in the city. Try taking it to a local GM dealer and tack on another 2-3 hundred bucks. Government is supposed to help it’s citizens but so far in the US government and the lobbiests are trying to destroy all classic cars one bill at a time, now SEMA wants to take away your right to customize your car. Whats next I wonder….Here in Canada they are just trying to jack up our hydro rates, combine two taxes one of which was supposed to be abolished back in the early 1990′s and so our income level just went down and the poor just became more poor and all done against our right to vote.
I swear this world is going insane…….

wtf man they want to take everything away.

Heres my letter to them

By making this bill, what will happen to those people that install aftermarket exhaust? They will lose there jobs. With that, they will not be paying state taxes and will probably get unemployment. So as a state, this bill will not only lose money, it will force money to be spent on a unnecessary expense. What of those workers that have kids or others that depend on them to support there family? This can led to more povery in a time were making jobs is very critical.

And for myself, will I get reimburse for the aftermarket exhaust that I have installed on my car? My car will also have a decrease in mpg, this will cost me more money and causing more use of gas. And last, I own a 76 Trans Am, GM has discontined Pontiac so were would I bring my car to? I guess to any GM dealership since most other exhaust shops will have shut down.

GTwildfire, I had to comment mostly because I loved that you used the words from Johnny Dangerously. Hilarious movie. lol.

On a serious note though, I will be writing to the Utah Senate to show that I do not support this at all. People’s jobs are at risk over this.

One thing REALLY impresses me about Utah’s State Senate. I got notification of every Email sent to them, and many started opening them almost immediately. All I can say is WOW! I don’t know what they have planned but they move in the blink of an eye!

I Emailed every one of them, including the one who brought this bill to the floor, Senator Patricia Jones. With all humor aside this is just wrong and if it passes once again America will become less American.
-
I wish legislators were a little more, okay maybe in some cases a lot more thoughtful about what they propose and its effects on our society as a whole. It may seem well-intended for whatever reason but slowly our country is becoming cluttered… junked up with nit-picky laws that focus on problems that other laws already cover i.e. noise restriction laws or “disturbing the peace” and state tailpipe emission requirements.
-
If Utah does not have tailpipe emission laws in place, she is barking up the wrong tree in yet another way. She should be working on emission requirements for Utah vehicles.
-
DUH perhaps?

This is horrible our government is legislating less and less for the public. Politics now are about money, party, and name recognition. Like there aren’t more important things like unemployment, deficits, and healthcare to worry about, they gotta try and take, whats left of, the fun out of our lives. We need real people in government no political puppets.

That is one ive the stupidest laws ive heard in a while.. im willing to bet there is some 80 year old senator behind this who should have quit a long time ago and he has a neighbor with an exhaust he doesnt like??? cause some one in the city “council” around here tried the same thing and it failed miserably

I have no idea where i would find an original exaust for my 38 plymouth, and even if i did it would be for the strait six it originally came with, not the v-8 i nestled between the fenders. I would have to assume that the law would have a grandfather clause in it, but that would mean that exaust better not get rusty because it would be illegal to replace it. This is maddness. If i lived in utah i would run a 8″ exaust on my 2.2L S-10 (http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3240057)right before the bill passed to prove a point just like ChAMbER_CUStOMS said.

Well they take it way too far , id be for a law that ban Straigh pipe on 4/6 Cylinders and fart can (n1 style muffler etc etc)but to ban all aftermarket ? ehh no thanks

retroman- Your 66 mustang is a perfect example….When you need a new exhaust what are you to do? Call your local dealer, MAYBE they might have some NOS parts laying around in the warehouse. And how much will that exhaust cost you….an arm, a leg, your first born, 3 kittens, and a Utah legislators head…. Thank god i don’t like in Utah.

ChAMber_CUStOMs- I think you hit it dead on. I can’t imagine having to find a factory exhast for my ’66 Mustang. I don’t think it’s had any exhaust in 2 decades!! lol. Also what legislators fail to realize is that sometimes it’s possible to get better fuel economy out of an aftermarket performance exhaust (and intake for that matter) than it is with the stock one. Oh well, Ohio doesn’t do routine inspections so if my state follows suit and adopts this law, I doubt they’ll be crawling under my vehicle to see if it’s legal. I’ve run without a cat on one of my older cars before (again, got better MPG’s and power w/o it), and no one seemed to notice.

So what happens if your stock exhaust gets rusty and falls off. Do you just have to buy a new car? Anything you replace it with will not have been initially installed by the original manufacturer thus you will be breaking the law.

Everyone that has an interest in modified or collectable cars needs to be a supporter of SAN!

ChAMbER_CUStOMS
Feb 23, 2010 at 5:06 pm

ARE YOU KIDDING ME…that’s stupid. I had an 88 RX7 and i needed a complete exhaust system so i called to get the stock exhaust and it would have cost me 4K so i bought a racing beat presilenser and headers, and an Apex’i N1 dual exhaust for less than half the price. Imagine you have a car from the 60′s or earlier, how hard would it be to find a STOCK exhaust? This pisses me off and i live in Canada. What’s next no power adders, rims, tires, or any modification. If I lived in Utah i’d put the biggest, loudest, and even nonfunctional exhaust i could right before the bill gets passed (if it does) just to piss them off. Put an 8″ exhaust from a semi on a smart car or something so ridiculous just to prove a point.
