Kooky Kustom 1961 Corvair on eBay

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

Talk about bizarro world! This 1961 Chevrolet Corvair was put through the full kustom treatment in the late 1960s or early 1970s and then stored. It’s a time capsule to a world we’re not sure we wanted to be taken back to. Just about every inch of this Corvair was modified somehow, including the nose which looks oddly Mustang-ish to us.

The car is being sold sans-engine, but it does have the four-speed transmission intact. According to the seller the car had some type of hydraulic suspension, and several other features of the car operate via hydraulic controls, like the trunk and hood. None of that hydraulic stuff works, but it’s there to be repaired.

The rear of the car is pretty cool with its smoothed sides and the strange louvers on the trunk. The crazy lacquer paint is totally perfect for the time period and frankly, there aren’t many shops that could replicate that look today. The targa roof is creepy and we’re thinking that unless the rest of the car was braced up, it’ll be flexy.

We’re putting this one in the, “We dig it so long as someone else owns it,” category. Would you buy it?

I wouldnt’ take it. But you realize that paint today would cost thousands to reproduce. Not to mention all the louvring, and frenched antenna(s). The semi ragtop. It might have been top of the line back in the day, but at least it was american.

I always thought that the Corvair was a nightmare on wheels, deadly, dangerous were a few words to describe it,,,think about it part Corvette part Bel-Air and never resembled either. Then this catasrophy good luck selling this peice of crap. That is all I can say, I would feel safer in a Pinto…

So, I can see the story behind this. Some returning Vietnam veterans were prolly gathered around the pool table smoking marajuana and drinking a few beers at the local biker club when one was like “Dude, I got this Corvair. Why don’t we chop it up and paint it all psychadelic.” And the others were like “Far out. Let’s do it, man.” Well, that’s just my take. And to any Vietnam vets out there, you have my full respect, whether you took to drug or heavy alcohol use or not after your service. I can’t begin to imagine the hardships you faced. Thank-you. Because of you, I’m proud to serve where you once did.

Get rid of the ugly-ass copper and fear and loathing in las vegas psychedelia paint job for something like black, rub out a small spot or two of body fab ridiculousness and this car could… could possibly look pretty kickass. Of course those steelies and rubber gotta go desperately and what’s that shit on the hood?

Anyway I don’t know… I think a major source of omygosh is the paint. It’s not hopeless, it seems.
