Canadian Officials Crush Modified Cars

By Michael Berenis

Tampa Sports Car Examiner

“If you want to get in the business of street racing, souping it up, or driving it, this is what’s going to happen to your car. We’re going to take it away from you, and we’re going to destroy it.” So if I modify my car for high performance you are going to crush it even if I don’t race? What do you all think about this trend towards preemptively seizing and destroying modded vehicles? Read more at Tampa Sports Car Examiner.

They can only seize cars if they are caught doing something wrong, or illegally modded. So i’d advise canadian ricers to stop cutting off their cat’s, but that’s just me.

Thats not what actually happens. They did that for the first few weeks to scare kids with shitty civics. I have a modified car, my friends do too and nothing happens. Its if you race you get your car taken away for 10 days, up to a 10,000 dollar fine and you license is gone for 10 days.

Sorry for the knee-jerk reaction but this kinda thing pisses me off to no end.

Politically, well heh… I have about as much confidence in the Canadian public/voters as I do with Americans. If politicians happen to be oriented to shoot down a stupid bill and the public agrees, all the better BUT if they are off on a tangent and do something assenine (or asseten in this case) I don’t think the public has it in them to twist arms.
Those of us who are upset enough are simply diluted by too many morons that let this kind of stuff happen again, and again.

Crushing cars used for illegal street racing? Don’t have much of a problem with that. The solution to keeping your car in tact is simple, don’t street race. Taking someone’s car and crushing it because they’ve modified it and it “could” be used to street race? No, that’s not right at all.

Canadians where this is happening need to stand up for themselves and stop the goverment officials who support that logic.

Don’t people ever learn from history?? Do the terms Whiskey rebellion and Prohibition mean anything to you?? Now, I don’t expect Canadians to know everything there is about U.S. history as I don’t know a whole lot about Canadian history, but still… In the past, the government tried to heavily tax and eradicate alcohol somewhat unjustly. I don’t drink, but that’s my choice. What I’m saying is that trying to eliminate hi-performance vehicles won’t work just like Prohibition didn’t work. I understand the intentions are good, but the methods of addressing those intentions is just horribly wrong, and won’t work. I wouldn’t be surprised if some gearheads started arming their cars with James Bond gadgetry to fight of the police now. After all, we gearheads do have the know how. One oil slick coming up…

I’d also like to add that aftermarket parts are a 16 billion dollar Canadian industry, which employs 1.2% of the entire population. It also is 1.2% of the Canadian GDP.

agreed with 98Altima– boycotting the country as a whole won’t help. What will help is if all Canadians write their country officials. One thing we can all agree though, is that this is taking away the Canadian right to creativity and individualism.

GTwildfire, boycotting Canada and telling us to kiss your ass? That seems to me like more of a shit approach then our politicians crushing cars. It’d be more effective to do the opposite and start buying up tons of custom parts that were build here

I understand why everyone is upset over this but you have to keep in mind that these poor politicians and law makers need good photo ops. The Canadian public needs to know that all these well paid public officials are doing something about our current issues and what better way than to smash up a few perfectly good cars with a front end loader (most cost effective/emission friendly way of course). I mean they could donate them to a high schools which would return them to legal condition (with some of that economic action plan money..preferably taken out of the HUGE advertising budget..whole other rant) upon which they could donate them to low income families or meals on wheels, etc..but I suppose there’s not much wow factor in that…

I’m with you GT.. this is totally bogus and if this is ever brought to be a bill in DC I say we flood the streets and picket. This is so wrong in many ways.

God this really… AAAARGH! where do they stop? What, they look at your car and it looks fast they crush it? Just like in the ‘states they use the fact that driving is a privelege and that extends allllllllll the way to freely being able to destroy your property NEVERMIND there’s no indication of guilt or wrongdoing?

WTF!?!

NO more Molson. NO more Canadian ANYTHING. That’s it. They can kiss my ass.
