New Taurus Cop Car

By David Clarke

highspeedhijinks

For the last several decades the Ford Crown Victoria has ruled the roost when it came to police-issued transportation. The only thing more antiquated than the 33-year-old “Panther” chassis it ran on might be the horses used by mounted police. So needless to say, this platform was long overdue for an upgrade. With more powerful and fuel-friendly competition out there already in the from of the Dodge Charger and Chevrolet Impala, Ford found it necessary to bring out their big new shiny gun: as of 2012, the Taurus will be the vehicle of choice for Ford’s Police Interceptor program. The base model police package will use the 3.5L v6 that puts out a respectable 263hp and 250lbft of torque. The pursuit vehicle, on the other hand, will be rocking all-wheel drive and the 365hp twin-turbo Eco Boost 3.5 found in the SHO.  Beefed-up brakes, a recalibrated stability control system, and doors that swing 10 degrees wider are just a few of the amenities Ford included to make the Taurus more police friendly. See more pics below the jump.

I wonder how many cops are gonna try to take one of them home with them as their daily driver. The twin turbo SHO is not your average police pursuit car. Can you just imagine the little bit of tweaking it will take to get that twin turbo screaming? Now the cops will drive better cars than your average joe. Better eat them doughnuts outside the car. LOL

All that I can say is, talk about distracted driving.

To my understanding police departments weren’t going to be using the new Taurus because it’s a unibody car. Obviously this poses a big problem because when this car hits another in an attempt to spin the latter car out MASSIVE damage will be done to the cruiser.
Unless of course they’ve decided to add a special frame under these cruisers while performing all the other modifications.
All I know is if this is the direction cruisers are going in I am no longer worried about being chased by a cop.

I’m just waiting for my town to start putting more of their chargers up for auction. Especially the ghost one, they’ve been using it since 2006 and if i recall correctly, when they got it the paper said it was modded to have over 460hp.

The Taurus got big shoes to fill. When I got my Marquis, I was very skeptical but it made me a believer. Aside from an ’88 Seville I once had the Marquis was a very solid car, probably more solid… and the Seville was a brick. When I used the term “squishy” I meant body panels. Tauruses had years, many years of rear bumpers breaking loose at the wheel wells, Tauruses had years of doors that would fold like paper with one hip check if your arms were full. I’ve seen this again and again and it does not instill confidence.

I know that FORD has improved their products, but I’m wtill skeptical. The 4.7 V8 is an engine that’s very hard to top for durability, and only one thing proves durability… time.

The new Taurus based Interceptor matches and in most comparisons execeeds the Crown Victoria. Believe me I love the CVPI and I’m looking to buy one soon, but the Taurus based Interceptor is just much more up to date. For the full story check out autoblog or Leftlanenews, the Taurus based Interceptor is a great successor to the CVPI.

Well, the SHOs are pretty quick, so it was no surprise to me that the Taurus would be marketed to Ohio’s finest and other police forces across the nation. I’ve ridden in a new SHO, and it’s not as squishy as you might think. There’s enough space in the trunk to hide 5 bodies- er- an extra large tool kit back there. Seating is comfortable and the ride is smooth do to the 20″ run flat tires. Rear visibility could use improvement, and it may also be harder to see over the dash for shorter balder officers. The SHO is pretty quick in spite of weighing 4500 lbs. It’s a car I like to drive, but I don’t want to own one. For the price of a SHO, you could almost get a BMW or Mercedes. It’s also alot quieter than the old ones, and perhaps not as much of a track star due to its girth. I couldn’t hear engine running at all, even under full acceleration.

well this isn’t really anything special. now if it was the Mustang instead of the Taurus then ya i’d love it, it would just be bad ass to see a 2010 Camaro cop car, 2010 Mustang cop car and 2010 Challenger cop car all sitting next to each other. i never really cared for Ford cars except for the Mustang and Crown Vics so i have to agree with GTwildfire that the Crown Vic was the last good Ford cop car

Something tells me the Taurus’ body is squishy in comparison with the Crown Vic. I’m skeptical they’re as tough. The Taurus name was tarnished long ago when I had one, and a Sable but I guess there’s no comparison, still my experiences make me real skeptical but… if this means he breaks down instead of handing me a ticket I wouldn’t mind.

Something else to look out for in the rear view mirror. Good looking cop car and an overdue change.
