What Decade Are You Tackling Next?
By Jen Dunnaway

As gearheads, we’ve always got our eye on our next project. You’ve got a ton of stuff bookmarked on Craigslist, and your eBay Motors notifications are dialed, right? Still, it can be easy to slip into a rut this way. Do you ever feel as if you’re doomed to keep buying up variants on the same car until you die? Maybe you’re stuck trying to re-create a ride you regret selling, or your backyard has become a sort of animal shelter for a certain make and model. Whatever it is you’re into, sometimes it can be tempting to break into a completely different automotive era, to shake your inertia and bust out of your comfort zone by making your next ride a total departure from what you’re used to working on. Read more…

For example, I’ve got a serious hankering to get my hands into a ’58 Pontiac or Buick–I’ve wanted a 50′s car ever since I was a kid. But somehow, I’ve been side-tracked into 80′s cars to the point where they are all I own. Don’t get me wrong: each of my cars was a choice and I enjoy them all tremendously. But I feel at this point that if I give in to the temptation to get a DeLorean or a K-car convertible or four-eyes Firebird–yet another variation on the theme–I really will be stuck in the 80′s forever. The time to break out of my rut is now!
So how about you? Got your eye on a ride that’s a complete departure from your usual? What decade are you going to tackle next?

Also, I have owned nearing 30 cars in my life, I recently did some figuring and over 20 have been 80′s cars, with a few 70′s cars and one 60′s car thrown in for good measure.

I am quite officially stuck in the 80′s. I have 9 cars right now, 7 from the 80′s, 1 from the 20′s and one from the 70′s. I have been looking very hard for an early 60′s 2 door ford car that I can afford, but that is very difficult to do. I have also been keeping my eyes open for a 50′s 2 door car for a decent price. This also hasn’t gone well. Oh well, I will just go find me another 80′s car.

I’ve done a decent job of covering several decades with the toys I’ve owned. When I was in my late teens I owned a couple of ’90′s imports but since then I’ve had: 1966 Impala, 1967 Ford F250, 1975 Firebird, 1976 Corvette, 1983 GMC S15, 1985 Chevy S10, 1986 Trans Am, 1989 Chevy Cheyenne, 1991 Chevy S10, 1994 GMC Z71, 1996 Chevy Blazer, 2000 Mustang and my 2005 Z51 Corvette. A few others along the way but this cover most of them. Even if my 2000 Convertible Mustang was technically an ’00′s car I feel like I stepped into a new era when I bought my 2005 Corvette recently. 2004 and prior seemed really like nice ’90′s cars where 2005 seemed to mark the beginning of a new era with nearly every auto maker making big changes. I hear ya about revisiting cars I miss, I still look at ’70′s Firebirds and Corvettes on Craigslist all the time!

I try to keep things interesting. So far I’ve owned or do own 2 early ’90s Dodges (both Spirits, so yes I understand your temptation to buy another k-car, Jen, cause I want a third), 1 60s (Mustang), 1 2000s (Buick Century), and 1 80s (89 Festiva). I’d really love to have a late Model T, Model A, ’55 T-bird, ’57 Bel-Air, ’40s woodie wagon or ‘vert, early ’70s muscle car, and even a 1903 Ford Model A or 1903 Cadillac. Those last 2 prolly won’t happen seeing each is very rare and worth upwards of $250k in spite of not having any electric amenities whatsoever and looking alot like a motorized horse-drawn cart, which is exactly what early cars were.

I like you will be stuck in the 80s as its what I know best. If I had to jump decades though, it would have to be into the 60′s, but the early 60′s not late 60′s. I have a hankering for a 1964 Pontiac Grand Prix.
