Kooky Kustom 1961 Corvair on eBay

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

Talk about bizarro world! This 1961 Chevrolet Corvair was put through the full kustom treatment in the late 1960s or early 1970s and then stored. It’s a time capsule to a world we’re not sure we wanted to be taken back to. Just about every inch of this Corvair was modified somehow, including the nose which looks oddly Mustang-ish to us.

The car is being sold sans-engine, but it does have the four-speed transmission intact. According to the seller the car had some type of hydraulic suspension, and several other features of the car operate via hydraulic controls, like the trunk and hood. None of that hydraulic stuff works, but it’s there to be repaired.

The rear of the car is pretty cool with its smoothed sides and the strange louvers on the trunk. The crazy lacquer paint is totally perfect for the time period and frankly, there aren’t many shops that could replicate that look today. The targa roof is creepy and we’re thinking that unless the rest of the car was braced up, it’ll be flexy.

We’re putting this one in the, “We dig it so long as someone else owns it,” category. Would you buy it?

Nurse Ratchet

By Speedhunters

Car Culture At Large

As I walked through the pits at the March Meet last weekend passing drag cars of all shapes and sizes, I spotted an absolute monster of a vehicle. Was that an old school ambulance? Indeed it was. From the time when they were made from fullsize passenger cars and not from vans. And it wasn’t just any old ambulance, but one of the fastest in the world. Meet Nurse Ratchet. An Education on Ice

By Ryan Douthit

Drivingsports.com

There’s been some debate on the “YouTubes” regarding my ability to handle a car on ice. Recently, Subaru gave me an opportunity to put these critics to rest by reviewing my techniques with a bona-fide expert in the field.

My mentor would be none other than John Haugland, an instructor at the Norwegian Winter Rally School in Norway, where he has had such star pupils as Petter Solberg and Richard Burns, among others. Our classroom would be a custom-built ice-racing circuit, along with a set of various Subaru Impreza models.

Now, keep in mind, the techniques we’re covering today are specifically for competitive driving only. You really shouldn’t be yanking the handbrake as you enter the local school driveway. Not cool. Continue reading after the jump!

By Rob Krider

Racerboy

The Krider Racing Big Sausage Pizza Delivery Acura Integra, sporting the CarDomain decals on the rear quarter panels, finished second overall and won the “good class” at the 24 Hours of LeMons Sears Pointless event. The team’s success was due in large part to the hard work of the Men in Black, Krider Racing’s pit crew, who had the fastest pit stops at the event. What Did You Do This Weekend?

By Jen Dunnaway

We jumped in Chris’s new Z51 Corvette and drove it as far up Mount Rainier as we could legally get. Amazingly, there was snow up there–the first I’ve seen all winter!–and though I was worried about the ‘Vette getting squirrelly on its summer tires, it stayed surefootedly planted to the occasionally slushy road just fine the whole way up and back. Check out page 2 of Chris’s ride page for more pics.

And how about you? What did you do this weekend?

Driver Ejected And Walks Away

By Michael Berenis

Tampa Sports Car Examiner

Due to a lack of build ethic and proper safety tactics, the driver of this 1955 Chevy was ejected from the flying rubble and lived to tell the tale. Not everyone is as lucky as this guy, he was up and walking away before the car was even done flipping. Read more about the miracle caught on tape at Tampa Sports Car Examiner.

Back To The Future 2 Fast 2 Furious Mashup

Yep, it’s really goofy, and I don’t think it’s going to do much for the cause of casting a DeLorean in the next Fast And Furious installment. But fun to watch nonetheless, and bonus points for the fake DeLorean engine sounds. Thanks to Austin for the tip.

Wow, I Guess It Really Is All About The Benjamins

Ben Franklin and a gun isn’t necessarily the first combo that’d come to mind if I was trying to come up with an airbrushed hood mural for my donk, but I guess that’s why I don’t own a donk. For a better look, check out Uncle Ben’s ’72 Caprice, “Benji Lopez”. The bodywork sequence is really cool!

Dune Bus

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Tom built one of the coolest VW Buses I’ve ever seen. From his ride page:

This is our family “dune bus” The whole idea started after a day of pushing pulling and changing plugs on my kids quads outin the Oregon Dunes. So over a beer around the campfire my buddy says “Hey it would be cool if you took an old VW bus and made it into a sand toy to haul your kids around”……So we did just that.
