Why Outlaw 8.5 Cars Rule

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

We’ve mentioned that the WCHRA race that we’ll be broadcasting live this weekend will feature an Outlaw 8.5 class. The great equalizer in this category is the fact that all competitors are limited to teeny-tiny, 8.5-inch-wide slicks. Considering that Stock Eliminator cars get to run a 9-incher, these tires are seriously small. Do not confuse a small tire with a slow car, though. These guys haul the mail.

The class is contested in the eighth-mile, mainly because the cars wearing the small tires are capable of smoking them at 1000 feet and the black track their way down the strip. It’s just too risky to run them all the way out the back door. The strongest cars in the class (nationally) are running in the very low 5-second range in the eighth.

Big wheelies are a staple of the class which seems kind of backward. You’d expect lots of tire smoke, and there is some when racers miss the setup, but when they hit it, the cars carry the front ends like they’re filled with helium.

A Quick JDM Van Fix

By Speedhunters

Car Culture At Large

It’s been some time since a hot looking Japanese van has been posted here, no? Here’s a very tasty looking dark green Odyssey found in the vast Minkara archive. Oh Honda, if you could just import the J-Odyssey to the USA, that’d be swell.

Discourages Tailgaters

By Jen Dunnaway

James Bond fan Colin Furze invented a seat-mounted flame-thrower for his scooter when he got sick of being crowded by aggressive drivers. Nice idea, with a variety of possible automotive applications. Those flapping polyester coat-tails so close to an open flame make me a little nervous, though–I mean, how epic would it be if the guy set himself on fire? More at MailOnline, via VWVortex.

Sneak Peak: Samuel Hubinette’s 2010 Dodge Challenger Drift Car

By John Naderi

StreetFire.net

You are looking at a shot of a 2010 Formula Drift car that almost didn’t happen. Samuel Hubinette, a two-time Formula Drift Champion who finished fourth in points last year had a trying 2009 season to say the least. First was the rather untimely bankruptcy of Chrysler that left his Nuformz Mopar/BFGoodrich team without sponsorship for the majority of last season followed by the tragic death of his team owner, Shaun Carlson just before last year’s FD finals.

But Samuel picked himself up and dusted off the tire bits and is preparing to come back with this 2010 Dodge Challenger that will include sponsorship from his longtime supporters Dodge and BFGoodrich. Samuel will also campaign the car under his newly formed eponymous Samuel Hubinette Racing team. But Samuel won‘t be the only driver on Team SHR as veteran rally ace Andrew Comrie-Picard will drive the team’s iconic Dodge Viper SRT-10. Hit the jump to see more pictures and a rough video of this car, which is very much still a work in progress.
