NYIAS: The New Jaguar XJ–A Design Flaw for a High Dollar Sedan….

By Jim Brennan

UDMan

Last night at dinner, the CarDomain and StreetFire staff touched on good looking cars at the show, and the new Jaguar XJ came up for discussion. So what was the conversation about? Read on!

We were all talking about some of the beautiful cars at this year’s show, and the usual suspects came up. We all loved the Aston Martin Rapide; the Porsche Panamera was panned by all of us except by Rob; the Mercedes SLS produced a positive response; and then there was the Jaguar XJ. John Naderi thought it was gorgeous, while I thought that there was one big design flaw that should have never been acceptable in such an expensive sedan.

And here it is, a piece of black plastic that covers the panel gap on the “D” pillar. This would have been acceptable in a $20,000 GM or Ford, but not a Jaguar, with the asking price in the high $80′s. It is such a cheap shortcut for a company that prides itself on design, fluid lines, performance, and luxury. The question is this: Did Jaguar take the cheap way out, or it doesn’t rally matter?

i dont think it looks like cheap black plastic, i think it kind of flows with the cars lines. I agree not the best looking. But it barely takes away from the cars beauty. It looks so much more exciting than the older jags. It actually looks like it would be a car that had some performance to it.

It’s supposed to look like that. It’s intended to resemble wrap-around glass. Although, in that case I guess it should actually be one continuous piece of glass, on such a pricey car.

WOW! I’ve been a fan of Jaguar since I was a kid and I have to say that I TOTALLY agree. They could have, at least, painted it body color. I hope that this isn’t a sign of things to come from Tata motors!

That black plastic blade is major “no-no”. That should be C/F or monochrome aluminum body panel. It’s a Jag….come on !!

Well, do most Jag owners tint their windows? If so, it would look a little more appropriate and even complete continuity if not for the silver trim that would interupt the transition of black from side to rear.

Yeah, that’s a very desparate long shot. I’m glad I’m not the only person in the world for an eye like this stuff and still cares about it. It looks like a short-cut to me, and disappoints me in Jaguar a little.
