GM Leaks Teaser Specs for 2011 Camaro Ahead of Press Release

There’s been a lot of hype over Ford’s 2011 Mustang for the past several weeks, and rightfully so–the new Mustang is totally badass! But this begs the question, how will the 2011 Camaro compare? We’re still awaiting GM’s official press release, but so far we know that the 2011 Camaro V-6 engine recently completed SAE certification testing and is now officially rated at 312 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, just barely topping the 2011 Mustang’s new 305 horsepower V-6. So far nothing new has been reported for the SS Camaro’s drivetrain. Follow the jump to see what else is new for the 2011 Camaro!

One of the more exciting new developments for 2011 is the addition of a programmable HUD (Head-Up Display), which projects selected gauge readings onto the windshield at the bottom edge of the driver’s line of sight and enables you to check vital stats without taking your eyes off the road. Already available on the Corvette, the Camaro will become the second Chevrolet vehicle to offer this cool feature.

Camaro’s Head-Up Display will include:

* Vehicle speed
* Tachometer
* Compass
* Outside air temperature
* Manual Paddle Shift Gear Indicator (if equipped)
* OnStar Turn-by-Turn
* Audio functions
* Phone information
* Selected gear
* Turn signal indicators
* High-beam indicator signal
* Vehicle messages

HUD was first offered on the 2002 Corvette, and the technology is borrowed from military fighter jets. For Camaro, it’ll be available on the 2LT and 2SS models.

Another change for 2011 is that for a limited time the Synergy Green package will be available on all trim levels.  This package was based on a 2009 SEMA concept and appeared on showroom floors earlier this year but was only available on the base 1LT. This is exciting for anyone who loves the color scheme but really wants an SS.

Correction: GM first introduced a primitive HUD system for a select few vehicles in 1988 but it didn’t catch on. It first appeared on GM vehicles in it’s more modern form for the 2001 model Corvette and became standard on the Z06 in 2002. It remains as an option on the standard coupe and convertible.

That ground effects package is stunning… verrry nice. The HUD doesn’t have to be fancy, just give a readout that’s readable. Good thing they kept the engine competitive, but I hope they come to their sense about the power brake thing.

No doubt the Camaro will stay competitive, but it doesn’t have the weight advantage the Mustang has so it’s hard to say if it will be enough to pull out on top performance wise. Sales are a no brainer though. The Mustang even with its face lift is still a 5 year old design now so the Camaro will definitely eek out on top there. And as for the heads up display, I know a guy with a ’92 Pontiac and I’ve seen this car myself, it has a HUD. Primitive, but it’s there. I was surprised a car that old had such an advanced option.
