Track To Street: The ZO6 Carbon

By Chris Bicknell

Bick66

In recent years, it seems the gap between racing and production is greater than ever. With our modern wave of pony cars, it’s nice to see that this seems to be changing. Still, with its 50 years of racing experience, the Corvette stands above the rest, but have you ever wondered exactly how components from legitimate race cars translate to their “track edition” counterparts in the showroom?  The sixth-generation Corvette is packed full of technology developed by the C5R racing team, and the new 2011 ZO6 Carbon edition is a great example of a production vehicle that employs real racing hardware. Check out the Corvette racing series video below to see for yourself.

Mbeezy3405 – well it made it seem like you were talking about and to everybody that was talking down on leather. but my cloth seats don’t bother me when i wear shorts and i’m not tall but also my shorts usually go to the middle of my knees when i sit (i don’t “sag” them, just i only wear jean shorts and they’re always long enough to go just past my knees while standing and middle of my knees when i sit). the actual feel of my cloth seats feel better than most other cloth i’m assuming. plus here in NC even though it don’t get below 0 we get all kinds of temps, in the summer it’s high 90s (low 100s usually for a couple weeks) and humidity in the 90s so leather don’t feel to good when it’s hot and when you’ve had the windows up, also it still gets cold here to, below freezing for a high sometimes so that cold leather wouldn’t feel to great either. cloth don’t get hot or cold. plus cloth doesn’t tear or rip nearly as easy as leather. none of the cloth in my truck is ripped or torn or anything and it’s a 98 (had the truck since 04) but i’ve seen elather seats in vehicles less than 5 years old all fucked up, i know some people aren’t as easy so it’s hard to compare but so far i’ve only see cig burns in cloth seats in any vehicle, leather seats i’ve seen cig burns, rips, torn, everything. i’ve seen vehicles 20+ years old with cloths seats and the cloth looks very worn but still no cuts or rips. from what i’ve seen the only time leather seats will have no cuts or rips after being more than 10 years old the vehicle was hardly driven as in less than 100,000 miles. i mean i know some people take care of their leather seats, my only point is that it seems that it takes more to take care of leather seats and cloth seems to last longer. so personally leather has nothing over cloth, even the feel is fine with me and don’t bother me in any way. but like you said this it jsut me personally so it’s not like i talk down to anybody that like’s leather seats because i don’t, would be stupid to. but my best friend let his wife pick the last car they got, an 03 Mustang V6 with leather seats and he said he loved the car at first but that was probably just knowing he had a Mustang, but he said now he wishes he never bought it and that he don’t like leather seats anymore basically for the same reasons i don’t like leather. but that’s just me i guess

Southernguy- just so were clear i was initially talking about jens comment about it being frou frou thats why i started off my opinion with addressing that, none of it was towards you, i personally enjoy leather, have in all my vehicles, its a personal preferance, Gm’s interiors have never screamed luxury but practicality instead which i get, thats why i buy imports, my Acura TL (RIPieces)i bought specifically because of the interior, woodgrain navi cream leather, didnt add to the performance but the many compliments i got on it constantly made me prouder and prouder of my car, and i blow greenery all day in my cars so its easier to air out vs cloth, but like i said its personal preferance, when wearing shorts i dont like my legs scratching on cloth i like the supple feel of leather, so in that light it does have some advantages but again its personal preferance not a necessity or something that imporves performance, but in a race car you dont have leather material because you slide and when the surface is wet its even worse, so thats why i agree with the suede inserts

Mbeezy3405 – well i never mentioned anything about the leather/suede in the Vette, everything i meant was about all leather seats in general so we agree on this just you think im talking about this Vette in particular which im not, im talking about leather seats in general. my whole point is just that leather is over rated, no real advantage to it. in a luxury car maybe i see that but im not the type to get luxury, i want something for performance and/or practicality so leather wouldn’t fit into anything i’d have or want even in a dialy driver. my cloth bucket seats did perfect when i put 2,000 miles on my truck in 1 month. don’t need leather seats to be comfortable like that heated seat and built in navi shit don’t either. some people think they need leather to be comfortable when they don’t. so when i said if i had the money for a Vette i might even switch them out with cloth i didn’t mean in this car, i meant in anything with all leather seats because i just have no interest in leather seats.

Agreed everyone has their likes and dislikes and if youve got the money too do what you want with it go for it (Look at that tweaker vette for instance) but i was just saying it serves a purpose and isnt really overdone as some might think, now having navi, heated seats and power everything like retroman mentioned shouldnt be on a race related car, just my opinion though, overall i think we can agree its a sick ass vette

Mbeezy3405 – actually i wasn’t complaining about the leather/suede combo, i was just saying i never cared for full leather seats period, and you know what, i could be in a car that cost a 1/4 Million and i wouldn’t mind cloth seats, i’d still actually prefer cloth. so if i had the money to have a Corvette i might actually change the leather to cloth to be honest. i don’t care how much a vehicle cost, i still wouldn’t want leather. i don’t see any advantages of it however you look at it

I like this alot, great idea for a racing anniversary car, but for all of you who are complaining about the leather/suede combo it serves a purpose other than being “frou-frou”, if youve ever taken a high speed turn in leather bucket seats it dosent quite work as well as you would hope, the suede inserts keep you planted in your seat, example ive driven both the S2000 (my dads is an 03′ white with all red and has 12k miles on it) and the S2000 CR which has the suede seats, same car but the difference with the seats is ridiculous while taking high speed corners, and the reason they have the leather is to set it apart from the rest, thats like buying a lambo or porsche and getting seats that a kia has in it, makes no sense, yeah they could have done cloth instead but why be average with an above average car? just a thought….

I drove a fairly new base model Z51 recently. It is by no means not the first Vette I’ve driven, but definitely the first in awhile so I had to reacquaint myself with the breed. I was shocked at all the necessary crap they had in it. At first, I felt like I was in a luxury car. It had this auto adjust feature on the seat which almost trash compacted me against the steering wheel. It was power everything, heat and cool settings on everything, satellite radio with navigation, heads up display (perhaps the only extra I liked), and a bunch of other stuff a die hard minimalist sports car fan like me doesn’t care about. My other gripe was it was an automatic. But even still, she handled like a dream and took off like a rocket when I commanded her to. If I were to own one though, I think I’d opt out of as many the extras as I could.

i love the car but it looks like all they did was take some of the things from the ZR1 and put it on the ZO6 Carbon so nothing really different, any Corvette is still bad ass though. and ya i agree, i never cared for leather, as long as the seat itself is comfortable i’m happy, i don’t care if it’s leather. plus with cloth you’re ass don’t get hot in the summer or cold in the winter. it could be 5° outside and my truck’s seat not be cold at all and it could be 100° and the seat not be hot even if i had my windows (tinted) up all day for a week. even if i bought a luxury car i wouldn’t care for leather. i think some people these days just want too much and then they bitch about it costing too much yet they have a built in Navi, 6 disc CD changer, heated leather seats with massage and all that BS. i’ve driven a lot of miles in my 12 year old Chevy Silverado with cloth bucket seats and it’s plenty comfortable to drive hours and hours in 1 day (i did it before, put about 2000 miles on my truck in 1 month, 3 round trips) so it doesn’t have to be leather to be comfortable, i think some people just want to say they have leather seats.

Oh, but this car looks awesome. I love how much the street car and race car share. It’s a rare and refreshing thing to see these days.

I agree, Suzy. I miss the good old vinyl interiors of the 60′s and 70′s. They last longer, wear better, they’re cheaper, look just as good at first and better later plus it doesn’t come from such a messed up industry. The whole leather = luxury thing is just silly.

Very nice! Now if only they’d offer it cloth interior, I’d be sold. That overdone suede-and-leather looks gross and is way too frou-frou for a race car.
