Project Nightmares

By David Clarke

Rob’s recent post about the Hondabaru (or whatever you want to call it) kind of gave me nightmares. Just think of all the obstacles that builder had to overcome to get such a contraption to work. Even thinking back on my own projects, I don’t envy what this builder had to go through. For instance, my header install on my ’84 Caprice should’ve been fairly straightforward–little did I know that by the time all was said and done, I would have to fabricate accessory brackets, modify my shift linkage, and source a “double hump” transmission crossmember only to find out that it too needs fabrication before it will fit. This is supposed to be fun, right? Luckily in my case these are all minor bumps in the road, but a few more and this could fast become a project nightmare. How about you–what was the one project that you wished you never started, or wished you  could be done with already?

hahaha… well yeah. The Fiero, which has been an ongoing project for quite a few months, and now the grand prix which needs a trans taking priority over the fiero.

Between that and side projects to try and make enough money to survive while I’m unemployed, I’m starting to entertain putting the Fiero on craigslist, moving my prix from the shop to my driveway and buying a dangerously cheap a to b ride that doesn’t need too much work.

Well that would have to be my current project that many of you might be familiar with…the Armored Truck build…http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2925230… everyday is a major battle in one form or another, nothing can just come together without a fight. Every issue always seems to lead directly into my wallet also…but we’re starting to win the battle as it is finally starting to take shape.

If your not familiar with it check it out and leave me your comments. Many new updates & pictures coming soon from the last 4 months worth of progress!

I have a few projects in mind but I’m a little afraid to….

I want to pull out my engine and clean it up. I do not have the shop or the equipment to do that.

I tried to wire up a simple cigarette lighter socket and got burned. I wasn’t paying attention and the wire got hot, started to melt, and almost caught fire in my hand.

Hmmm, let’s see…I have a couple relating to my ’91 Daytona. First, there was the battery replacement where I discovered that the old battery had leaked–causing the hold-down tab and the bolt securing it to fuse into a solid mass. Not only did I have to bend it out of the way without breaking the plastic battery tray or punching a hole in the old battery, I then had to bend it BACK to install the NEW battery–ALSO without punching a hole in the battery.
Then there was the turn-signal switch that wouldn’t signal a left. Took me two years to locate a working, used one in a yard (they’re unavailable from Chrysler and nobody was making them in the aftermarket). During that time, I had to locate a replacement cluster as well, since my odometer quit (found one showing within a hundred miles of my estimated true mileage). Swapping the cluster and the switch took, no kidding, the better part of a day. It’s all screws and plugs, but it was still a nightmare, requiring me to disassemble and reassemble the whole instrument pod several times.
Then there was replacing the battery in my Stratus. It’s inside the left front fender and you have to go through the wheelhouse to get at it. It’s held in place by one English bolt and one metric, I kid you not. The icing on that particular cake is that the manual says you don’t have to pull the LF wheel to get the battery out, but you really do. Turned the wheel to full lock like the manual says, jacked it up until the suspension was completely unloaded and the battery still hit the tire.
And don’t even get me started about the hassles that developed when I decided to replace the ancient hoses on my clothes washer…
