Photo of the Day

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

Today’s photo comes from my kid sister, who’s traveling right now, and who sent me this cool snap of a sweet vintage Skyline she found parked on the street in Hong Kong. Of course, there’s no ride page to link to, so I’ve included another view of the car below the jump.

Download StreetFire’s iPhone App!

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

StreetFire’s iPhone app is finally done! Seriously, this took forever. Not because our dev guys had any trouble making it, mind you, but because getting something approved by Apple is a bureaucratic nightmare. Fortunately, that grueling process is over with, and StreetVids is now available! Obviously, you can use it to watch videos—Top Gear, anyone?—but if you have the 3GS, you can shoot and upload video too. So if you’re out at the track watching drags, or just happen to stumble across some hilarious donk on the street in front of your work, you can instantly share it with the world. Personally, I love my iPhone, and I’ve been waiting for this forever. I also have to admit I’m pumped that I wrote the description for the App Store…

Do You Have A Fuelly Account?

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

I was reminded of Fuelly.com recently when I ran across the cool MPG widget at the top of Josh’s Ford Festiva page. I wanted one! If you’re a terminally disorganized individual like myself, tracking your gas mileage by scribbling odometer readings on pay-at-the-pump receipts and then trying to remember to organize them later is pretty much not going to happen. And in my case, the task is made a little more annoying by the fact that my Escort GT lacks a working gas gauge and is a Canadian car with an odometer that reads in kms. Fuelly takes care of all that by letting you just punch in your fuel-up info in any denomination and then does all the relevant conversions and calculations for you.  They’ve apparently also got a mobile app that allows you to enter your info right at the pump, but I haven’t evolved that far yet.

Since that really awful gas-price crunch of a couple of summers ago, obsessing over fuel mileage has become a little less trendy, but it’s still a sensible metric for tracking the the overall health of your ride and the true cost (or savings) associated with mods ranging from a new set of tires to a new fuel-delivery setup. Fuelly lets you get into a bit of a MPG pissing contest with other members, and its line graph format makes you want to beat your previous scores. Anyway, I spent a little too much time geeking out on the site this morning, but now I’m curious–are any of you on Fuelly? Link your Fuelly homepage in the comments. Here’s mine.

Score a Ridealong With Burnout Winner Kevin Harvick

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

As part of the only-in-NASCAR pageantry leading up to the exhibition Showdown and All-Star races at Charlotte next month, Pennzoil is running a stock-car burnout contest at Charlotte Motor Speedway May 22. And this year, one crazed superfan will get to ride shotgun with former winner Kevin Harvick. The Penzoil Ultra Victory Challenge gives top Sprint Cup drivers the opportunity to demonstrate the art of roasting tires in a 30-second “freestyle burnout,” though this year they also get the chance to earn extra points for knocking things over (yep, you read that right) while in full-on victory donut mode. I caught part of the spectacle on TV last year, and it was pretty cool–obviously not as wild as those anarchic Australian burnout comps where they peg the motor until everything blows up, but it’s cool to see top-tier NASCAR drivers engaging in some seriously goofy hijinks as part of the sport’s official proceedings. Check out Charlotte Motor Speedway’s Facebook page for updates, and the official contest page here!

A 4-Door Cadillac That Goes Tens

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

Making big Cadillacs run hard isn’t a new thing, but it never gets old either. This drag video, which we believe was shot at Byron Dragway in Byron, Illinois is awesome. It shows a claimed street race machine from Chi-town on the strip stomping the daylights out of what looks to be a full-race Camaro. We want this car bad!

Sleepers rule, but this thing is beyond sleeper. If you looked at that car and thought 10.20s through the mufflers, you’re way better than us. Our friend Courtney Hines, owner of Cad Company, has built killer Caddy power for decades. In fact, he built the world’s fastest Cadillac, in the Spectre Performance Streamliner, but seeing another one of these beasts plowing down a drag strip still gets us lathered up.

We know what the guy in the Camaro was thinking when he saw the rear doors of the Cad come by, “What the hell?!”

Tuners

By David Wallens

Grassroots Motorsports

Everyone needs a good tuner. Oh, sure, we can all read an air-fuel gauge, but at some point it’s nice to work with an expert. That’s where Ed Senf comes in. He tunes Grand-Am and World Challenge cars, but every now and then he’ll come down to our level. He recently worked his magic and added a Hondata to my B16A-powered CRX. Guess what? It now pulls like a freight train.

Ward’s Surprising 2010 Interior of the Year Awards

By Chris Bicknell

Bick66

For years now, Chevrolet has been known for producing vehicle interiors with substandard materials and an overall lack of attention to detail. The fit, finish and quality of even enthusiast cars such as the 4th gen Camaro and the C5 Corvette felt cheap and didn’t match the performance, quality or aesthetic appeal of the vehicle as a whole. This has baffled me since as drivers, don’t we tend to spend most of our time looking at the inside of our cars? That being said, I was pleasantly surprised to find not one, but two Chevrolet models on the list of Ward’s top 10 interiors of 2010. Amazingly enough, the Camaro and Equinox share this list with name plates such as the Porsche Panamera, BMW Gran Turismo and Infiniti M56. Although I don’t really agree with all the cars chosen or the way they’ve been classed, it’s nice to see think that GM might be making some moves in the right direction. Follow the jump for the complete list with categories and pictures.

What new 2010 interior would make your top ten list?

That’s A Normal-Sized Woman Standing Next To That Thing

By Jen Dunnaway

Powered by a 16-liter inline motor from a PT boat, guzzling fuel from its 50-gallon tank through dual Zenith carbs, the behemoth Hudson Invader is the latest in the whackjob creator’s bizarre stable of “LARGER THAN LIFE SUPER CARS.” The rambling auction copy advises the curious to “GOOGLE TO PHOTOS AND HISTORY OF THESE AUTOMOBILES” if they want to know what the hell is up with these freakishly large vehicles, so I did–check out La Bestione and Van Blerick, clearly creations of a mad genuis. Still scratching my head, though–the eBay auction has to be seen to be believed.

Video: Formula Drifters Tear up Hollywood Blvd

By John Naderi

StreetFire.net

Tonight Hollywood Blvd went up in smoke. No, it wasn’t the premier of the long awaited remake to the Cheech and Chong Classic (see: Express, Pineapple). The smoke enveloping the touristy Hollywood and Highland area was of the spent tire variety from the likes of BFGoodrich, Falken and Nitto. And it was all part of a drift demo produced by Formula Drift. Hit the jump to see how and why FD scorched the Walk of Fame plus some quick videos from the event.
