Boaterhome For Sale on Hemmings

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

Hey, what’s more American than a Boaterhome? Just 21 were made back in ’86 by Sport King. The Econoline-based rig functioned as an RV on land, but when you got to the lake–plop! You can unload your boat in under two minutes without having to get out of your vehicle! Oh wait, I think you have to get out of your vehicle to get into the boat. Darn it. See the ad on Hemmings!

Samuel Hubinette’s New Drift Challenger On The Track

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

A Jalopnik reader scored this raw video of Hubinette testing his new Formula Drift Challenger at Adams Motorsports Park this week. There’s a slightly more produced similar video making the rounds, but it’s tarted up with goofy music that obscures the film’s true soundtrack: the guttural roar of that 800 hp, methanol-injected 410. Accordingly, the raw version below is better. Enjoy! Via Jalopnik.

Drifting: Sport or Spectacle?

By David Clarke

highspeedhijinks

The other evening I was having a healthy discussion with one of my friends (let’s call him Hal) on whether certain automotive exploits could be considered motorsports. One we agreed on was demolition derbies–they clearly do not constitute a “sport”. But another activity that we ultimately disagreed on was drifting. I believe without question that drifting is indeed a sport. Thanks to organizations like Formula D, it has a points system, major sponsors, backing from the auto manufacturers, and a dedicated fan base. Hal on the other hand thought that drifting was more of an exhibition that belongs at the state fairgrounds somewhere between the monster trucks and the pickup tug-of-war. My argument for the place of drifting in motorsports relied largely on the fact that drifters have a skill that not every joe blow behind the wheel can achieve–their work takes tremendous effort and discipline, not to mention the precision engineering that goes into their vehicles. Hal’s argument, on the other hand, was that sliding around blowing smoke is not the fastest way around the track, and seems more like showing off–if drifting is a sport, you might as well count lowrider jumping contests within motorsports as well. We were kind of at a stalemate, so I guess it’s up to you fine folks to settle this age-old argument for us. Drifting: legitimate motorsport or empty spectacle?

Video: The Worlds Quickest Time Attack Car. In the World!

By John Naderi

StreetFire.net

Any time attack fanboi worth his salt can tell you that the car to beat, the mack daddy, who’s your daddy, big daddy is the HKS CT230R JDM Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. The car, driven by Nobuteru “No One Better” Taniguchi, has been wrecking clocks all over Japan owning tuning car records at all of the top tracks, most notably the Tsukuba circuit. At this, the World’s most legendary time attack circuit NOB put up a record-setting 53.589-second lap a few years back that still stands to this day.

In 2007 HKS took its show on the road and tripped on over to the USDM side of the Pac rim; more specifically, Buttonwillow Raceway Park’s Race #13 configuration in a clockwise fashion. Think of Buttonwillow as Tsukuba’s much less attractive soul sister, only with better BBQ. Once again, HKS plus NOB equaled time attack dominance and their 1:43.523 put the North American tuner record well out of reach. Or we should say well out of reach for anyone whose name is not Dennis Kottke. Who is Dennis Kottke? Today he is the owner of the world’s quickest time attack machine, oddly enough this title is nowhere near good enough for him. Hit the jump to find out why.

There’s been a lot of hype over Ford’s 2011 Mustang for the past several weeks, and rightfully so–the new Mustang is totally badass! But this begs the question, how will the 2011 Camaro compare? We’re still awaiting GM’s official press release, but so far we know that the 2011 Camaro V-6 engine recently completed SAE certification testing and is now officially rated at 312 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, just barely topping the 2011 Mustang’s new 305 horsepower V-6. So far nothing new has been reported for the SS Camaro’s drivetrain. Follow the jump to see what else is new for the 2011 Camaro!

Barris Kustoms Releases a Custom 2010 Camaro, We Release Our Lunch

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

Some truly whacked stuff has left the doors of Barris Kustoms in recent years. There was that Prius for starters, but this 2010 Camaro “Spirit” beats them all by a country mile. A “kustom” that was constructed by swapping the grill for some chain parts store chrome and hideous paint, this is a sad addition to the Barris Kustoms legacy. And he plans to sell multiple copies through the Chevy dealer network!

It’s time for George to put the tools and ideas down and step away from the car. This is true even if the only tool he is holding is the screwdriver used to install the awful grille in the “Spirit.” When we read the breathless release that describes this car as “one of the hottest and long-awaited ‘kustom’ Chevrolets in history,” we were moved to laughter. Check out BANGShift to learn more.
