Under The Lights At Viva Las Vegas
By Speedhunters
Car Culture At Large
Last Friday night, after losing my fair share of cash in the casinos, I headed over to the The Orleans Hotel to see if anything was going on at ground zero for Viva Las Vegas. The main show wouldn’t be going on until Saturday, but I figured I might be able to catch some cars cruising around under the lights. See the whole gallery of night shots at Speedhunters.

What’s The Oldest Car You’d Run As Your Daily Driver?
By Jen Dunnaway
Editor
When I was little, beating around every day in a 50′s car was considered a bit on the eccentric side, but not out of the question–hey, they were only 30-year-old cars back then, same as the 80′s rides I drive to work today. It’s true that you can make any car your daily driver as long as it’s inherently durable and you keep up on the maintenance, but it seems to me that to run something like this gorgeous ’57 Dodge Coronet, as its previous owner did, you’d have to be okay with some pretty burly risks. I admire people who are down with running their classic rides in all kinds of weather and traffic and parking them out between the beige road appliances in the employee lot–but would you do it? For me, 1975 would be the approximate cutoff vintage for my daily driver. Anything older than that, I’d mostly just want to pamper. How about you–what’s the oldest car you’d drive to work every day? Oh, and check out the auction for the ultra-clean Coronet on eBay.
The Smoking Tire Smokes Tires of 2011 Mustang GT
By John Coyle
Deputy Editor
Last week, Matt Farah and the guys from the Smoking Tire got a chance to play with Ford’s 2011 V6 Mustang, and Matt said it might just be the most might just be the most significant car built in the States this year. High praise indeed. But in this episode, they get their hands on the Blue Oval’s brand-new 412HP 5.0 GT! They flog it on Mulholland and even get a chance to drag the trick Pony against the new Camaro SS. If you know the specs of these beefy pieces of American muscle, you can probably guess which one comes out on top…
’66 Sting Ray Found Rotting in Seattle’s Industrial Wasteland
Bick66
While navigating the back roads of America’s 3rd largest industrial area just South of Seattle I was shocked to find a 1966 Corvette Sting Ray resting quietly between two huge warehouses. Heavy spring winds had all but stripped the classic sports car of its ragged cover, and it was obvious that it hadn’t moved in quite some time–the tab showed it having been last registered in 1988, and it’s suffered some substantial fiberglass damage to the right rear quarter. Aside from that, the car looks complete and would make an awesome restoration project. I’d love to track down the owner and learn the story behind this beautiful Corvette. See more pictures after the jump and tell us, what rare cars have you found in unexpected places?

RC Cars Look Seriously Cool In Ultra Slow-Mo
By Jen Dunnaway
Editor
If you’ve ever gotten a chance to go over one of these pro-quality RC cars up close, you’ve been amazed by how precisely the components mimic their full-sized corollaries–it’s like all your favorite car parts only smaller!–so I guess it’s no surprise that, weird body-panel distortion aside, these tiny rides appear to behave exactly the way full-grown vehicles do when you slow them down enough to really be able to see what’s going on when you slam them around. Enjoy the show–the footage toward the end of the baja cars playing in the puddles is worth holding out for.
Speeding Police Destroy Galant

A very tastefully modified Mitsubishi Galant was destroyed by a police cruiser chasing a speeding motorist. Was this really worth the speeding ticket? I think not! Read more about the chaos at Tampa Sports Car Examiner.
No Burnouts For Camaro After 2012?
By Jen Dunnaway
Editor
Mr. Angry says that brake override systems will be going into new GM’s in 2012, which means that the simultaneous mashing of gas and brake will produce no cool smoke effects. This is great news for future Prius owners, but hey, if you’re in the market for a RWD muscle car, isn’t burnoutability part of what you’re paying for? More at RideLust.

Photo of the Day
By Jen Dunnaway
Editor
Today’s photo comes from our buddies at That Will Buff Out. I’m always a little sad to see a trailer cruising down the highway with a load of crushed cars (I’m not one of those people who thinks, “Yay, new Kias!”). At least at the scene of a wreck like this, you’d have a chance to make sure there’s nothing good in there. Keep your Photo of the Day tips and PM’s coming!

0-60 Deputy Editor Shoots Off Mouth, Gets Challenged
By John Coyle
Deputy Editor
0-60 Deputy Editor Matt Tuccillo recently shot off his mouth and bragged that on any given day, he could drive 9/10ths as well as Vaughn Gittin Jr. Understandably, Vaughn wasn’t intimidated—and neither was his girlfriend Abby. So they grabbed his 2010 Mustang and headed out to a parking lot to figure out who was better at drifting, Matt or Abby. So who was on top to when the tire smoke cleared? Anybody remember this episode of the Brady Bunch?

Diesel Mustangs? In Europe?
Atomicalex
I caught Ford’s Dave Piatek on the radio this morning talking about expanding the reach of the Mustang to Europe. Ok, that make sense–the Mustang has evolved into a thoroughbred, and the 2011 car is well-suited for the continent with its good V6 fuel economy and a chassis that stays composed at autobahn speeds. Plus, Europeans do like horsepower. But diesel? Holy cow. You thought the new 5.0 V8 roasted tires, but imagine a hi-po turbocharged oil-burner in there! It’s the recipe for a whole new level of smoke. Do you think Europe will have any idea what hit it?
