Video: Ferrari 599XX Laps Nürburgring in 6 Minutes, 58.16 Seconds

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

The 599XX is a 700HP, weapons-grade version of the 599GTB, and it drops Modena’s luxury appointments in favor of race-ready features like plastic windows and a roll cage. Ferrari says this run is a record for a “production-based” sports car,  and while it might be technically right, this Cavallino isn’t street-legal and ran the lap shod with slicks. So you can make your own decisions about whether this “record” is that big of a deal, but regardless, this video is sick.

Dumbass Video: Smart Car Attempts a J-Turn

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

Ah, the J-Turn. For those of you unfamiliar, it is the act of accelerating your car in reverse, cranking the wheel to one side and while the car is spinning around, jamming it into a forward gear and hammering the go pedal. It’s sometimes called a Rockford, or a Rick Hunter maneuver, and when pulled off correctly, it is loads of fun and you look like a hero. When you attempt the aforementioned move in a car with zero wheelbase and a high center of gravity, even a fifth grade science student could predict the result. These guys failed out of fourth grade apparently.

This in-car video of two blokes attempting a J-turn in a Smart car is pretty funny stuff. Listen closely right after the car goes turtle to what one of the guys mutters out. This is not the first time they’ve found themselves in this predicament.

Warning!!! If you have children in the room, there is swearing right at the end, but it’s in British, so probably hard for kids to understand.

Where Do You Work On Your Ride?

By David Clarke

highspeedhijinks

We all love to work on our cars–for the most part. A big factor in whether or not you truly enjoy wrenching on your ride is where you are doing it. I’ve done oil changes on a lift, on a pair of jack stands, and on a piece of cardboard out in the street. Let’s just say I enjoyed doing it on the lift more than on my back. Recently, I’ve had to bounce my ride from place to place in search of a decent place to work. Luckily I have a cool service manager at work, and he’s agreed to let me service my ride after hours at the dealership, as long as it’s back outside when I’m done (there’s always a hitch haha). Most of the work I’ve done in the past took place at my grandfather’s garage, but it’s great to have access to a lift for those projects that really need one. So how about you–are you fortunate enough to work out of a garage, or are you doing your wrenching on the asphalt?

Mr. Angry Enters the One Lap of America

By Mike Musto

RideLust.com

We’ve got less than a week to go before the start of the One Lap of America and to say I’m scrambling to get ready would be an understatement. The Charger is ready (for the most part) to take on another 4000 mile run and do battle with some of the meanest and fastest cars in the country. We’ll not only be hitting 9 different race tracks, but we’ll be driving some 15-18 hours per day. This is one hell of a haul ladies and gentleman and because of this we’re not going to waste the opportunity. We’ve teamed up with the VA Palo Alto Health Care System to help our wounded Veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. My co-driver for this event will be international automotive importer Chris Smith. Also accompanying us and the team that spearheaded our Road Back Home Project, is Todd Ford, a West Coast Venture Capitalist and Dr. Peter Cassini, a Neurologist in Stanford, CA. They will be piloting a Ferrari F430. Both cars have been completely vinyl wrapped to reflect the spirit of what we are trying to accomplish and to help us raise awareness for our Veterans.

Convertible 2nd Gen Firebird on eBay

By Chris Bicknell

Bick66

We all know that GM never produced a factory convertible option for the second generation Camaro or Firebird, but every now and then you see one that’s been converted.  This 1981 Pontiac Firebird Formula was recently pulled from storage with only 22,000 miles on the odometer and in need of only minor attention.  Given its new rag-top, fresh tuneup and like-new exterior some lucky bidder is going to have a badass ride.  You can bet that no one else on your block will have one like it and the best part is there’s no reserve!  Check out more pictures after the jump and see the eBay auction here.
