What Did You Do This Weekend?
By Jen Dunnaway

I had a very fulfilling weekend: swapped out a tie rod end on my diesel Escort, watched a little NASCAR on TV, made some burritos, and toured the all-new Griot’s Garage facility (more on that in a bit). I also went and checked out a junkyard I’d never been to before: Pull A Part in Tacoma. There was a ton of cars there, with a decent selection of older vehicles. The place was the usual seasonal rowboat-worthy lake, and it seemed a little pricier than some of the other U-Pulls I’ve visited in the area. But I found everything I was looking for there, and will be happy to give them some repeat business.
How about you? What did you do this weekend?

On Saturday, I went to the big cruise in Ocean City with a friend. Spent three hours working my way from one corner of the lot to the other, then went to an all-Mopar get-together in a shopping center parking lot on 45th Street.
I filled my camera’s memory stick with over 160 photos (only 512MB at 6.0MP), which I’m gradually putting up at Flickr this week. Lots of great cars there. Ever seen a hot-rodded Graham? Neither had I, until Saturday. Sadly, it was gone by the time I made it back to that part of the lot. Definitely worth the long drive from Glen Burnie and the hunt for parking.
Sunday was supposed to be the Mid-Atlantic Mopar Meet at Mason-Dixon Dragway, but it was rescheduled to June 13 due to rain.

I work retail so technically today is the start of my weekend. MEH I finished tearing out my headliner in the Jeep. Nasty, nasty stuff up there. Hoping to build a replacement for the sun shade today or tomorrow. I am going full on redneck. Taking some scrap oak boards that I got from work and milling them down to 1/8. Once I have enough I plan on gluing them to a canvas backing so that I can have a roll-top desk style shade for my sun roof.

Chose to ride the motorcycle instead of working on the Caprice. That car has worn my patence thin for the moment. Back on it in a few weeks when I save up some more dough.

Worked on the 240Z all weekend. Flushed the coolant. Installed 160 degree thermostat. Bleed the brakes twice – and now have brakes that last for more than 5 min. Installed billet specialties optima battery mount and optima battery, cleaned the wheels. Test striped sections of paint. Began dissassembling dash to install new speedo and tach – PITA. Finally took it for a ride without something going awry.

Excellent site, keep up the good work. I read a lot of blogs on a daily basis and for the most part, people lack substance but, I just wanted to make a quick comment to say I’m glad I found your blog. Thanks

I love the “What did you do this weekend?” segment, missed it when it was gone. It’s a kind of therapy, even if nobody else gives a crap.

This weekend I finished the steering rack replacement on my recent acquisition, a dangerously cheap ’97 Malibu. The original rack had been broken off and shacked haphazardly into place with U bolts that had come loose (go figure). Anyway replacing the rack resolved the passenger side’s broken mount but I had to come up with something for the driver side since a tab on the subframe broke.
I ended up drilling two holes in a spare Fiero strut mount plate which I know will hold, since it took about 90 minutes for me to drill 2 holes in this thing. I don’t know what kind of steel it’s made from, but it’s anything but normal and strong as hell. If I didn’t know how to sharpen drill bits I would have toasted every one in the box with the drill press.
-
Wierder yet, on a hunch I put a masonry bit in the drill press, DIDN’T lube while drilling, INTENTIONALLY ramping up the heat until it went critical and that’s what got through the piece pretty efficiently. Yet even wierderer… the masonry bit was unharmed, lol.
-
Fabbing can be some freaky s##t sometimes. Anyway the piece tied down the DS of the rack very nicely and the car can turn left, right and go straight even… wheee… now to get the POS on the road.

Drove around 210+ miles on Sunday and I had left 1/2 tank of gas left and then finally watched iron man 2 at the end of the day. And finally have a date for the Camaro to be shipped!

I swapped the Impala’s wiper motor for one I bought on eBay. It didn’t work, unfortunately. Back to the drawing board on that one.

Installed new Powerslot rotors and Hawk HPS pads front and rear on my 240sx. Went to the open car show in Kaslo BC.
