Fireball Gets a Cool Car Visit

By Fireball Tim

Movie Car Design Master

I have one childhood friend. And his name is Mike. We go way back to 7th grade and… we both love cars. We caused a lot of trouble with them and could tell you things that would land us in jail. But that’s another story…

So, Mike took it upon himself to collect something bigger than a Johnny Lightning. He bought a 1931 Ford Model A Tudor. Well, not really. He actually bought a lot of Model A pieces and for the last 2 years, built this gorgeous vehicular contraption. And it’s awesome.

The greatest gift you can give someone is an experience they’ll never forget. And that’s exactly what Mike did for me today. He drove that little Black and Green beast all the way from Irwindale to Malibu. For the first time… on surface streets. When he arrived, we went over the car and all the great stories that made up how he built it. Hand painted in stipple. His boys wrenching… and they’re 7. The brand new Cokers that came in the mail. Where he found the car.

Then… we went for coffee. Up into hoyty toyty Malibu. And you shoulda seen the faces. If I had a dollar for every smile…

Cars bring people together. Adding happiness to the world. And bring peace among people. Thanks, Mike. My buddy always.

Jump for the shots…

Goodguys Orange County Get-Together 2010

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

Apparently the 2010 Goodguys Orange County (California) Get-Together was a huge deal. Our intrepid Chad Reynolds was manning the mic at the Ridetech Street Challenge Autocross all weekend, plus he sent in a photo gallery of nearly 350 of the best carsat the show, inside and out.

He was too busy to shoot the Autocross itself, but told us that the annual Editor’s Challenge was great. Each magazine or online editor got to to take one lap in a Chevy, one in a Ford, and one in Mopar (a rented new Challenger). Nick Licata of Camaro Performers took the win with Jeff Smith of Car Craft coming in second place by mere fractions of a second.

So Long, Miles!

By Jen Dunnaway

It’s been a pretty fantastic race weekend at Dover, and I’m even more in love with this dazzling, hard-driving track than I was the first time I saw a race here. In addition to being a really cool place to watch NASCAR, Dover has some incredible people–NASCAR can be a tough nut to crack, but PR director Gary Camp and the media center staff do an amazing job of opening Dover’s doors and making sure that you get a chance to see everything you want to see. If you’re ever anywhere near the East Coast, the Monster Mile is a track you need to visit.

If you’re just coming back to the internets from your own awesome weekend, you might only just now be figuring out that the blog was inundated with NASCAR coverage while you were gone–you can check out my collected blogs from Dover here, and browse through both the Nationwide gallery and the Sprint Cup gallery in our Events section. Enjoy, and watch for more weekend race coverage on CarDomain in the coming weeks. Valvoline is sending us to Charlotte, Pocono, and maybe even Infineon!

Two In A Row At Dover For Kyle Busch

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

Damn, I was really enjoying that battle between Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch–that was an extremely cool show to watch in person, and I’m sure it was great on TV as well. Too bad it was cut short by Jimmie’s pit road speeding penalty near the end of the race, because it’s unlikely that he and Kyle wouldn’t've given each other a run for their money in place of what turned out to be a cruise-control finish. Still, Kyle Busch deserves a big congrats for proving himself in Sprint Cup on the heels of his victory in the Nationwide series yesterday. Oh, and Dover still gives the coolest trophy in NASCAR.

Pit Road Pandemonium

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

The latest pit-road incident involves Clint Bowyer driving off with his jack stuck under his car, but on Dover’s pit road, it’s not hard to see why things like this happen. The pit lane here was widened and lengthened recently, but it’s still right up against the track, separated from the frontstretch by only a wall instead of the usual expanse of grass, meaning there’s no room for runout and nowhere to go when someone launches into your path. Stuff can’t help but get crazy when everyone needs to pit at once–from the roof of the media center, cars looked like they were virtually on top of each other as they slammed into the pits two- and three-wide.

The Race Is On–Who’s Your Pick To Win?

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

Let’s see: Mark Martin has won here like a million times, but Jimmie Johnson’s got the greatest percentage of wins, with five in his 16 starts at Dover. He’s also got the fastest car on the track right now, and swept bot the fall and spring races here last year. On the other hand there’s the Gibbs Toyotas: Kyle Busch won the Nationwide race yesterday and is running up front, and Denny Hamlin has momentum on his side, and was doing pretty well in yesterday’s race until he was wrecked out by Clint Bowyer at the end. Kasey Kahne walked away from the field as soon as the race started, though Johnson just chased him down and is in first. So who’s your pick? Who do you think will win today? Watch the race now on Fox.

Sprint Cup Tech Inspection

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

Out in Dover’s garage area, the cars are undergoing pre-race inspection. They pass through a number of stations, some of them in the garage and some of them outside, to make sure everything’s within spec and nobody’s trying to bend the rules too much. See a few more pics below the jump!
