Mercury: Another One Bites The Dust

By Jen Dunnaway

It’s official: Ford’s Mercury division is the latest casualty of the automakers’ brand-shedding craze that has claimed a host of GM littermates and narrowly missed a beloved Euro or two. I guess it’s only right to say that Mercury will be missed, that they produced a lot of cool cars back in the day, etc., but I honestly can’t muster up anything to feel other than numbness. Brand killings are getting to be an almost daily occurrence, and it’s hard to recall much of anything cool that’s come out of Mercury in recent memory that isn’t just a novelty variant on the corresponding Ford product: the 5.0L Capri comes to mind. And with its current offerings of porky SUVs and blandly derivative sedans, it’s clear the make has been dying a slow death for years. R.I.P.

Actually, Courtney_S, unless your looking for badging and trim, finding parts will never be all that hard. There are at least 8 Fords for every Mercury, and guess what?? They’re all essentially the same car minus trim and badging. Same goes with Lincoln. I’ve swapped parts easily between the three brands for many of my friends.

Mercury has seen its final days. It has been officially announced that Ford will no longer be creating the Ford Mercury automobile. The design isn’t really creating enough cash to keep it in production. The auto has been around for decades, and has had its fair share of time. The only remaining question, is the Mercury planning to turn into a classic auto, or an old piece of junk? Oh, and now how prolonged until finding parts for my Mercury is going to be next to impossible. Hopefully that doesn’t happen until I get rid of my vehicle. For me I think Ford company should give a second thought if they are really going to dispose “mercury.” They should still consider if a lot of people still wants it or not.

Wow… I remember posting in this thread. It disappeared. I hope I didn’t offend anyone.

troutster, Ford really has not done any promotion for Mercury in the past few years. For example, did you know that there was a commertial for the Mercury Marauder. The commertial was only used a few times. Ford also did a bad job with sales promotion with Mercury, once again I will use the example of the Marauder. It was supposed to sell for $25,000 but a sales representive at a promotion event for the Marauder released the price as $35,000. Its things like that, that lead to Mercury’s death along with the constant target group changes.

It’s a shame to see Mercury go away. I work at a Ford Mercury dealership as a Level 3 Sales Consultant here in northwestern Pennsylvania and have been selling Ford and Mercury vehicles both for 6 years now…I have driven many Mercury vehicles and Mercury has some very nice cars…I actually almost bought a Milan a couple of years ago myself….definitely a little more “classy” of a vehicle than the Fords…Although our Ford sales far exceed our Mercury sales every month and every year, we sell a ton of Mariners and a decent amount of Milans….we’re #1 in Mercury sales in our region and usually top 5 or top 3 in the region in total new sales each month….One thing about Mercury is that they are very comparable in price to Ford models which is nice to tell people because some of them have a perception before stepping on our lot that Mercury is so much more expensive than Ford which may have been true years ago, but a is big misconception over the last few years..heck, even rebates on some Mercury models are better than rebates on Ford vehicles so it’s always nice to re-educate someone on a Mercury vehicle and watch them say “wow, I would’ve never considered a Mercury before because I thought they cost a lot more.” Now that Mercury is going away, I don’t know what make our dealership will pick up in it’s place…my manager told us that the owners and company controller were thinking about maybe trying to pick up Lincoln but he told him that we are not in an area where we could do well with them because of the economy and subpar credit around here…My co-workers and I all agree with him…we think the owner wants Lincoln just so he can drive a Navigator or some other big expensive SUV LOL…I guess we will just see what happens next…Thank you Mercury for your many years of producing fine automobiles and giving me an opportunity to sell them.

I was hoping they’d revive the brand starting with a Mustang-based retro-styled Cougar, but I guess these days, one pony car per automaker is become standard. Was also hoping for a Comet. Didn’t have to be new. I’d settle for an imported rebadged Ford from another market (like the Falcon…), but hopes and dreams all too soon come to an end. RIP Mercury.

well for up here in canada, mercury has not been around since 2000. so it doesn’t really matter. you still see used mercs up here but those are imported through the ford dealers i think. anyway the marauder was the only merc i really liked.

I agree totally that Mercury has been a dying breed since the 70s. All of their vehicles were just rebadged Fords with only a few exceptions. I am a big fan of the first gen Cougars, and I guess I like all the Mercury versions of the Fords but I don’t think cutting Mercury is going to be a real automotive loss. The last thing that really had any spark of individuality was the Marauder and even that was only a testosterone injected Crown Vic. Mercury, like Oldsmobile, hadn’t really been a flavorful and unique brand for a long time. I think it makes a lot of sense for Ford to trim it.
63Meteor, I disagree. I don’t think that Mercury’s failure was in promotion, I think it was in substance. Mercury didn’t really offer much more or different than Ford did so there wasn’t much brand differentiation. Of course that was Ford’s fault, no question, but at this point it makes sense to get rid of it instead of pouring money into a dying brand.

Its sad that Ford is killing Mercury, they could have made something out of the company. As a part of a Mercury family it is truly a sad thing, since we have 4 Mercurys, its a depressing feeling. Be it our Mercury Meteors or our Marauders (2003-2004), they are extremely great cars. If Ford had just promoted Mercury better, they would be making a ton of money off of them.

Well the last car that they made that had any impact would have to be the 1970 Eliminator. Since then they have been slowly fading away. I would say that I miss them but they left a long time ago.
