Wow! Now that’s Cheap Insurance!

By Alex Vickers

Katakuna

I’ve gone back and forth about actually fixing this car: should I shell out $400 to get it running, or should I let it sit in my driveway like redneck yard art? Should I save it from eternal damnation, or should I leave it to rot in automotive hell? Should I breathe life into it once more, or should I pull the plug (so to speak)?

Here’s what’s almost made up my mind: I just got an insurance quote from Hagerty Collector Car Insurance. An entire year’s policy would only cost me $315.82 a year. Think about that: It’s only thirty dollars a month! I’m only eighteen years old, and I got an insurance quote for a man thrice my age. Hit the jump to read more…

What made such a low premium possible? The car itself. It’s forty-seven years old, it’s in relatively decent shape despite its exterior appearance, and it’s got less than 43,000 miles on it. It’s got the largest engine ever offered, but it’s still only a 1600 Dual Port. The fact it only puts out 50 horsepower helps a lot too. There was also a thing about historical plates, but apparently getting those means you can only drive it on weekends.

When you think about it, how many male drivers my age can boast about low insurance rates? My friend Tinker and I were comparing quotes just the other day, and his quote on a 1996 Crown Vic came out to be over $340. A month. The look on my face must’ve been priceless.

What about you? What kind of insurance do you have? How much are your premiums?

Yeah, I guess that’s cheap…… but check out my car…. I pay $25 a month to insure a 94 Corolla!!! lol. I’m 23 though. But $25/month is pretty darn cheap as well!

Alex, are you planning to store that bug in a garage? If not, Hagerty will tell you you’re SOL. I’ve investigated just about every outfit offering classic-car coverage and the only one that didn’t insist on “fully-enclosed, lockable storage” was State Farm–and they wanted the car to be finished. Not “needs paint,” not “gonna do the interior some day,” but finished.
Which is why both my Furies are additional cars on my regular Geico policy, with liability only.

Man, that is awesome news. I myself am actually shopping for a Bug. I’ve been casually making offers on them here in Seattle. So far no luck but I’m only willing to pay up to $900.

Look for Safety features for lower insurance example ABS, AIR Bags (lots of them) this will lower insurance because it is cheaper to repair or replace a car then it is a Human. I went from my ’92 Bonneville to an ’89 Sunbird insurance went up cause I went from two air bags and ABS to no safety except small crumple zones. Oh yeah put every thing you can insure on your policy house apartment other cars it helps a lot.

“Hagerty provides coverage for collector vehicles that are used on a limited basis — e.g. club functions, exhibitions, organized meets, tours and limited pleasure driving.”

FYI that means you won’t be able to drive it to work, won’t be able to drive it to run errands, won’t be able to put serious miles on it.

If you are going to use the bug for driving on a nice saturday this insurance will work for you, if you expect to use it like a regular car it won’t. And if you try to use it like a regular car and get in an accident on your way to work or something they will deny your claim (meaning you have to pay for you and the other guy’s repairs) and drop your policy.

Make sure you know what you’re getting with that policy. I have a ’62 Comet that I keep regular insurance on because I like being able to use it whenever and wherever I want.
