Drift on the Beach!

By Karan Singh

StreetFire.net

Every once in a while I get an inclination to go to the beach like the guys in this video. The only difference is that I can’t drive my car out onto the sands of Santa Monica and drift around like the Subarus and Evos in this video! They must be at a dog beach though because there are entirely too many dogs running around!

Beautiful Rabbit TDI Conversion

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

This ’77 Rabbit is running a complete drivetrain from a ’98 TDI Jetta, and it looks to be an extremely clean swap. The newer harness and OBDII infrastructure is there as well, with the original Rabbit dash and switches all hooked up to the later-model wiring–no small task on a VW, I’d imagine. The seller wants $13K for it. See more pics below the jump, and the seller’s description at VWVortex.

Driving the Nissan Leaf

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Two years ago, Bob Lutz came to Seattle to tell us about the Volt. At that time I no idea Nissan was working on an electric vehicle and had never heard of the Leaf. Fast forward two years–both the Volt and the Leaf are very close to production and will be rolled out in a few states starting in December. But Nissan is getting a jump on the PR game by making their pre-production vehicles available to journalists. And for some reason they invited me to come drive one.

Newera Imports AE86 Trueno

By Speedhunters

Car Culture At Large

It might be hard to believe but this very clean, and uniquely colored green AE86 has recently become a donor car for a rather special project. Miguel of Newera Imports, one of the most respected Japan-based car exporters, picked up the Trueno hatch a while back and as soon as he did I rushed to shoot it at one of his yards in the Tokyo bay. Laying eyes on it for the first time I thought it was the perfect hachiroku, clean inside and out and sporting very aggressive TRD N2 overfenders, something you don’t see on street cars so often. See more of this JDM beauty at Speedhunters.

Tommy Ivo’s Tow Rig History

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

Tommy Ivo is rightfully known as drag racing’s first great showman. He had awesome looking cars that ran up to their appearance, and even his towing equipment was top shelf. He understood that the show wasn’t just on the track, in fact, the show was 24/7. Phil Burgess penned an awesome piece over on his NHRA.com blog that details the whole history of how Ivo toted his race cars around.

Not taking anything away from Phil, but the fact that Ivo included several totally kick ass stories really knocked the piece out of the park. From the creepy single-axle trailers used to haul his earliest cars to the glass-sided trailers and later Dodge truck that would become a signature of his, Ivo always seemed to have a better idea.

We really dig the fact that, until he swapped to a fifth-wheel style trailer, he tugged everything around with either Buicks or Cadillacs. In more than a few of the photos, the big sedans that had pulling duty were basically bumper dragging with the weight of tools in the trunk and the weight of the trailer pushing down on them. He claims to have racked up 100,000 miles a year on those cars touring the country. He’d leave in the Spring and come home in the late Fall. Imagine those adventures!

Anyway, Ivo revealed in this column that his autobiography is coming out sooner rather than later. Trust us when we say that we’ll be first in line for that one! This is a great piece by Burgess and Ivo. Hell, the photos are more than worth the price of admission!

Tuner Insight Parked on Seattle Street

By Jen Dunnaway

Someone apparently takes their first-gen Honda Insight pretty seriously, which isn’t surprising in a town that brought Microsoft, Amazon, and Starbucks into the world. The blackout tail lights and the headlight eyebrows are nice touches. And those canards–gee, I wonder if they do anything for the fuel mileage? Follow the jump for a couple more pics.

Driving Test Scene From License To Drive

By Jen Dunnaway

I’d forgotten how awesome this cornball flick was. This was from way back in the day when Corey Haim (R.I.P.) was just an adorable little kid and the California DMV apparently ran a fleet of 80′s Escorts and Chevettes for their driving tests. Love it!
