Camaro Wrests Sales Lead Back From Mustang

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

Like a pair of heavyweight prize fighters trading blows, the Camaro and Mustang continue to fight for sales and performance supremacy here in America. According to the dudes at Camaro5.com, 6,321 Camaros left dealer lots in August as opposed to 5,570 Mustangs. Obviously the inhabitants of the Camaro-centric site were happy with this news.

The Dodge Challenger (which we still think is the hottestĀ looking car of the troika) seems to be withering on the vine in the face of competition, moving a scant 3.283 units.

While it is awesome that there is a sales battle to write about, we need to put things in perspective. In 1987 Chevy sold 137,760 Camaros which is an average of 11,480 per month, verging on double current volume. If that isn’t a reality check on where the automotive marketplace is right now, we don’t know what is.

We’ll stop being a wet blanket now and remind ourselves that it is still possible to walk into a showroom and score a hunk of American iron with more than 400 hp, in three different styles. That’s good news any way you slice it.

Hit the link below, these dudes at Camaro5 are fancy! There are all kinds of charts and graphics. Hell, it looks like a Ross Perot infomercial!

Though the sales figures are low compared to yesteryear, the cars are very popular and will probably hold their value better than previous generations.

VV That’s a good point. The Challenger, while the best looking in my opinion (I’m mostly a Mustang fan too), just isn’t the best performance bang for the buck. The V6 model is the heaviest and the least powerful of the 3. The Hemi version while still severely overweight still doesn’t have the power to get off the line quicker than the other two. The Mustang is approaching the SRTs 425hp rating, weighs hundreds of pounds less, and Dodge has done nothing to gain a competitive advantage. Put the car on a diet and give it some of that 600hp grunt we lost with the Viper this year.

Camaros and Mustangs don’t cost arms and legs…Don’t think you can get an R/T decsently equipped, new, for under $30K…
