A Peek Inside The Texas DeLorean Facility

By Jen Dunnaway

Culturemap is running a lovely photo essay on the DMC headquarters in Houson, where DeLoreans from around the country are maintained and refurbished, and where “new” DeLoreans are assembled from the NOS and reproduction parts and panels that are stockpiled there. Hit the jump for the pics, and view the full article here.

@ Mustangfeverrr: Just to clarify, none of the Deloreans came from the factory painted. (The stainless actually holds up great against the elements.) Before the factory closed, they were experimenting with some painting and tinted clearcoat options, but nothing made it to production. There are some cars out there that people like to claim are “factory painted”. There were some that were painted by the dealers in an effort to move inventory. Otherwise, the ones you see that are painted were most likely either painted to hide body damage or just to have a more “unique” Delorean.

I guess they didn’t get the memo that stainless steel isn’t exactly “stainless” when exposed to the elements, hence many of the last units having actual paint jobs instead of bare metal exteriors…
Still, pretty cool though. As mentioned, they weren’t exactly Ferraris (I beat one in a stoplight race back in the day in my ’83 VW GTI), but a great riding, very cool car.
I’d be interested to see what they’re asking for them now.

Here is the link to where you can purchase a new one (built from new & rebuilt parts) or a used one: http://www.delorean.com/index-5.html

I wonder if they had any Flux Capacitors left over? I hope so because that was one slow heavy azz car. Does it come complete with a brick of Coke in the back?

Cool to see CarDomain doing a feature on Deloreans. They really are unique cars with an interesting history. Not powerhouses by any means, but with a little effort that can be overcome. (Mine has a air/water intercooled twin turbo PRV 3.0 and is also widened 8″) If you can get past the flux capacitor comments and cocaine jokes, it’s really cool seeing most people’s reaction to the Delorean. (which always gets more attention than other “exotics” yet costs a tiny fraction of what they do.)

Ahhh, the memories.
I use to work at the original factory in Belfast. It didn’t look anything like the one in Houston!
Glad they are still being kept alive.
My DeLorean was under powered, poorly built, and unreliable on the highway. The electrical system sucked and you could never predict when you were going to have a problem with the doors.
But it was fun to drive.
It’s good they have upgraded all of the weak areas and made it reliable.

It may have been mentioned but what is the name of the facility and how much is it to buy one, what are the different options, does the company have a website for those interested in purchasing one?
Thanx

Well, I’ve got two Deloreans. Vin 941 (the 441st one produced and it is modified with a Water Cooled Turbo) quite fun to drive. It’s also got lowered Eibach performance springs and 18″ rear rims and 17″ front rims which look nicer than the original 15″ and 14″ rims. Very cool. I’ve also got Vin 4984 a Stock Delorean that I often take out on the road. They’re very nice touring cars. They aren’t really meant for around town and not meant to be fast off the line. They are very fun to drive. The new cars produced use a the original engines with modifications to the engine and exhaust to draw a bit more horsepower. They can now be built with lots of fine options that didn’t exist in 1981.

This is seriously cool!!

I had no idea a company existed like this!?

Even if the Renault engine wasn’t the most powerful, these are really cool cars.

To whom ever thought of posting this – thanks!

I hope they do well from a business point of view, and if you just are in love with the car get one, but considering performance developement, this car is really lacking. A Honda Civic 4 cyl could out drag it and beat it around any road course! John D ran out of money to get the car where it should have been in handling, power, quality.

Flew through the article so I may have missed the information but, I have a question. Are these new DeLoreans using the same Euro V-6 that powered the original? Seems like a Camaro 300HP V6,a Taurus/Milan/Lincoln V-6 could provide much greater power to weight and better mileage, all at the same time. Love to see the DeLorean beat extinction.

I wonder if they do “Back to The Future” Editions. There was a DeLorean here around town but the guy got in a car wreck and totaled it. I never knew there was a place like this that did nothing but build DeLoreans from NOS and refurbished parts. I’ve heard of 1 or 2 people that do just DeLoreans but not in a big facility like this, just a regular autp garage type place or on the side at their house.
