Should Jeeps and Mustangs Have “Refined” Interiors?

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Jalopnik is all excited about the revised interior in the 2011 Jeep. And most of the automotive press did backflips over the 2010+ Mustang interior. Honestly, though, I prefer the older, less “refined” interiors in the 2007 – 2010 Wrangler and the 2005 – 2009 Mustang. I think that Jeeps and Mustang should be more plain jane and less “soft touch.” Below is a pic of the 2011 Wrangler interior. I’ve pasted interior pics from the 2007 Wrangler, the 2011 Mustang GT and the 2008 Bullitt after the jump! Check ‘em out and let us know which interiors you prefer!

its funny.. My ’10 Unlimited Rubicon has leather seats and the nav system… guess what.. those things don’t affects it’s ability to go off road at all.. I pulled the carpet so it’s easy to clean up. While I wheel it just about every weekend.. i also drive it to work everyday.. that’s the nice thing about this rig. you CAN do both!!

I also have a ’94 Mustang GT Convertible 5spd. I didn’t have a problem with the interior in’94 when I bought it and I don’t have a problem with it now! I did do a few mods to it, like pulling the 2.73 rear gear in favor of a 3.73, MAC exhaust from the headers back, lowered and braced with subframe connectors.. and it’s a beauty!!

I wonder how many of the commenters here have ever actually driven/owned a Jeep or a Mustang (that daddy didnt buy for them)….

Jeep needs to stick to being utilitarian, the chrome trim is disgusting. Jeep needed to stick with the niche market by producing capable 4×4 off road vehicles with basic interior design.

The mustangs guages are very nice…but considering the $price$, seriously dissapointed with the quality. Fords have always been famous for cheapo interiors. The jeep is supposed to be less flashy, yes. Considering that the jeep interior is almost nicer than the mustangs would most certainly turn me away from ever buying a Ford. Its a shame Ford can come out with such a great looking car w/a great drivetrain & totally ruin the car by trying to pocket every penny by skimping on the interior. Ford is all about making money…customer satisfaction is not their goal & its obvious. Take that into consideration before buying one of their cars.

we have a Wrangler. Its a 95 and the interior is perfect. No doors or top about 9 months of the year, its getting rained on right now – go buy a Rover. The first guy mentioned GMC trucks, well I have a Chevy Avalanche and almost pulled out all my hair when i was shopping. The Z71 package used to mean “off road” now it must mean “Escalade” because its had leather, Onstalker, Bose crap, and buttons on top of buttons, and dont get me started on that center console instead of a whole seat. Its a F’n truck and thats how I use it. Thankfully I found a used 4wd with a rear locker and none of the mentioned worthless garbage. The interior and trim should match the vehicle, luxury cars should have lots of useless crap, but the other vehicles…

Depends on the trim package. Look at a GMC Sierra work truck vs a Sierra “Luxury” version. Same trucks, same drive train, different interiors and “shiny stuff”. The Mustang GT should offer a Hard Core package that uses cloth interior, manual trans only, AC as an option, all manual seats/windows/locks, standard low end radio and less sound deadening material. And then the Premium should have the creature comforts and updated interiors. This would allow the enthusiast without 40k to still get a 400+hp car and the executive who has 50k to get his comfort and “show” and still keep all the go. Just my .02……

I feel like the Mustang should have a nice interior. It’s a 30k+ car. I like everything in the 2011 except the radio/climate control area. It’s improved over the 2009 and older but it still needs work. I suppose that is easily fixed with a quality dash kit though. Just wish it didn’t look so cheap from the factory.

Jeeps are meant to have fun in thats what there built for not to cruz in so whats the sense in all of the extra stuff. Most jeeps get the doors ripped off anyways so theres no point to AC lol. As far as the mustang would you rather have 800hp or heated seats? lol no question 800hp!!!!

Of course they should have refined interiors, who wants to drive in a plain pizza box. I like all the frills as not as it’s not overdone

if by refined you mean polished aliminum diamond plate!?

then yes,

if you mean woodgrain, leather and plastic!?

you know why girl cars are girl cars :D

You know what is really sad on all of this is that the people who buy these vehicles don’t really look at the history. If you don’t know the history behind the name and all you really need to do your research. I got my collection of cars and after doing the research on all of them you got to really love the history on the model. That is reason for my collection is for the history not for the ego and the attitude of things its for the love. I belong to the South Central Mustang Club out of Wichita,Ks and the members in the club are great. They love the mustang for the history. It says something that you are proud of the work that has gone into the making of the vehicle. The research that goes into each is amazing. Respect what goes into a car or a truck cause there is lot of hard work went into it.

Idealy they should still to original lean interiors. the problem is, think of how many people buy the Jeeps and Mustangs simply for the status and image. 90% of Harley-Davidson owners are only in it for the status and the “look, i’m a badass now because i own a Harley.” I know because I work for a dealer and deal with these people every day. Its the same story with new Camaro owners, Mustang owners and Jeep owners. Plush fancy interiors are needed to attract that 90% of the customer field or the whole things a flop. its sad but true

i dont know about mustangs, never really tickled my fancy, but as for jeeps, i know that there should never ever be any chrome, leather, or mud flaps. all of these things are sins against the jeep. jeeps are not supposed to look good, (though often they do) and are not supposed to be made for comfort. they are off road vehicles, not mall crawler date night cars. now all that being said, i dont care if they put in luxury items, as long as they dont sacrifice off-road preformance. and it all has to be waterproof, for when the top and doors are off. and if they make the doors non-removable, my sawzall will get a workout.

The 07 Jeep is ok but the 2011 is terrible an automatic and steering wheel controls should never be in a Wrangler they have other models to be luxury and just carry the name the Wrangler needs to stay a JEEP the mustang is ok though they are a newer car with newer interior they all changed over the years exterior and interior to match the time.

I personally like the soft touch interiors. The 05-09 mustang interior was extremely tacky and cheap. My 91 fox has, in my opinion, great interior that was similar in quality with interiors of other vehicles of the same era. Why should someone pay $30k for a new mustang or jeep and be rewarded with tacky cheap plastic that looks like a fisher price toy set? Honestly the 05-09 mustang interior was the reason a few of my friends didn’t buy the car. My girlfriends cavelier has nicer interior than the s197 mustangs. Ford definitely needed to upgrade the interior. Personally I am amazed this is even a debate. Ford dropped the ball on the 05-09 interior. Who actually wants cheap interior in a car?? The majority of the mustangs on the road are daily drivers that people occasionally play with. Since that is the case, interior comfort and quality is a priority for the vast majority of car buyers. Not many people with drop 30k on a new car to make it a purpose built race or drag car.

mustangs = drag cars..”All business”.. no fluff.

Jeeps = rock crawlers..”all dirty”..no extra stuff

The point (GTwildfire and BigMike) is that this is just another step in them dumbing down the Wrangler, to the point where it is someday SURE to have IFS, maybe even IRS, and be nothing more than a name and a good marketing ploy. That day is not that far off….I’m fine with the WK2 having the fantastic interior it has, it deserves it.

The Mustangs so far have felt like shit, and I really felt awful just riding in them. The interior faded quickly, things rattled, and Ford should have felt long ago that they could make a new interior that’s probably overkill just so show that there’s no need to have a Mustang’s interior be total garbage. Total, complete garbage.

New Mustang looks great. The old interiors were nice too, but the new one is a definete improvement in terms of styling.(and I’m more of a camaro fan myself). Not liking the new jeep interior, at least the old one suits the vehicle.

Gotta agree with GTwildfire on this one. Is the term “less-refined” actually being used here? Now I’ll admit, there’s something nostalgic about driving an old mustang with the wood steering wheel and a bench seat or a CJ with no roof and just a few gauges to let you know what you need to. But you can’t honestly tell me that these interiors in these new cars are too refined for anybody! It’s a sign of the times. The new mustang interiors are gorgeous and utilize a much better leather on the seats, steering wheel, and better materials overall and it looks like the Jeep will too. It not only feels better to drive, but it raises the bar of the company and the brand. I love these new interiors!

Jeep – metal dash with the speedo centered. Replace nav screen with a good old compass.

I don’t really care about the mustangs but as far as jeep goes. If a yuppy is gonna drive it then sure put all that fancy crap in there. If someone is gonna wheel it, one they’re crazy with that price tag, and two most of the new jeeps if not all are all IFS now so they’re not all that capable IMHO. If your gonna make it more “fancy”, at least make the interior more durable from human error and outside elements. Don’t get me wrong though, I love Jeep In fact I own one. I just don’t like how they’re going completely street for all the yuppys that want be a billy badass and say they have a jeep yet they never leave pavement their entire lives. Have a good day everybody :)

It’s not LOOKS that define quality as far as interiors go, it’s TEXTURE, and from that perspective, the Mustang’s was terrible. The Wrangler’s is supposed to be.

Honestly, the Mustang interiors look the same modern style. The Jeep interior, the previous looked very cheap and 90s, but the newer one looks a little better. BUT… if I’m using a Jeep like it should be used, I’d much rather cover the inside of the 07 in MUD lol. But it’s not like I’d take the new Jeep offroad…. that thing doesn’t look like it belongs offroad.

To me, personally, they all look more or less the same, cheap with too much plastic. I like old cars though, when they actually cared about styling, so I’m biased. So what the pointy knobs and metal dashes scramble you like an egg in a crash.

i drove my friends ’08 mustang arround this weekend, the thing that bothered me the most was the shifter, it’s realy awkward to use.

I find opinions like this about “refined interiors” intellectually insulting. It’s like getting a form letter from a politician you complain to… no thought, just effortlessly pumped out there in the review to beef it up and add a touch of elite credibility…
-
It seems everything should have a better interior. I bet is they reviewed a commercial van they’d need therapy for life.
-
The best interior for a given model is what is appropriate. If you buy a Cadillac or BMW expect nice finishes, materials and lots of attention paid to getting it right. If you buy a Tata Nano expect that you will be able to sit, steer and tell how fast you are going. All else in between needs only be appropriate for what kind of vehicle it is, Period.

Not really bothered by the interiors as long as there isn’t gobs of faux chrome and brushed aluminum.

mustangs should have good interiors (and now they do). jeeps should have good interiors (and now they do). WRANGLER owners should not cry about their interiors. GO BUY A WK2 already!

i like the way the 07 wrangler interior was… drove one in hawaii on my honeymoon and it was straight forward… nothing complicated and the way a jeep should be… and as far as the new 10 mustangs go, its nice sporty and it fits with the car

Okay, after driving a 2008 wrangler for a while now, I would have to say the interior needed work. Its one of those things where people who don’t own the said cars complain, but the people who had to deal with the cheap ass interior on the older unlimited’s asked for. And I even got a set of sick katzskin leather full material replacements, made the interior a WHOLE lot better. the original seats are nice, but there’s nothing like leather. I like the new redesign, too bad about the F***** horrible engine. Needs at least the Ram V-6, even with my old stock rims it had NOTHING before around 2500 rpms, and the tranny loved to shift up. Next one’s gonna be a manual. Thank you and goodnight.

I dont know why your all hot and botered by the Rob, but they look like the same damn thing. There are a few small differences but both interiors are still boxy and gross like before. I almost bought a 2006 Roush3 brand new until i drove it around for the weekend and could not get over how plain the inside felt for the price tag.

I’m not saying they should or shouldn’t, but the previous models look nicer without all the plasti-chrome gingerbread.
