Tastefully Underglowed Grand Am

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

Ever since I put my foot in my mouth the other week by suggesting that no one’s doing neon anymore, I’ve been noticing lots of tasty underglow on CarDomain. Check out Sean’s nicely-appointed Grand Am. In addition to the nice combination of the popsicle red with the silver, I’m definitely digging the wheels. Check out the ride page!

Jen is easily amused lol. Played out underglow, played out rims. Maybe if it was lower…

Neon is still an option if done right. The “street Glow” is sort of out but if you place neon in a cool spot, such as inside the engine bay of a ’42 Ford truck with the vented hood so the light seeps out from the hood vents. Or in my case, I was considering putting a glow inside the front fender vents of my C5, the kind you turn on when parked, I think that would be trippy.

Neon lights were cool in 1995-1996 and were played out by 1998….

its only cool when it can’t be seen. I think that one LED strip under the car nearest to the middle of the vehicle looks best. Then you don’t see the focused strips of light on the ground. Just a nice glow emanating from somewhere underneath

Not a big fan of underglow really unless it’s on an 18 wheeler…

The Grand Am look clean; I’m not to crazy about the LED lights.. I have a Grand Am my self with a rear mounted turbo.

the only part of the car that should have led is the head or tail lamps.

I got a 02 grand am gt. Nothing done to it yet, but seeing the neon gives me some ideas. I still just plan on putting a carbon fiber hood on it, play with the exhaust and performance chip. Maybe some 18′s and LED lights.

I’ve thought of doing underglow, and won’t rule out an install in the future.

This install looks good but I don’t like the front’s exposure. You can see the light source, which seems like a big mistake to me. I would recommend making a shield to hide the light source and creating a perforated aluminum grille for the lower openings out of sheet aluminum, punched hole pattern NOT the stupid chicken wire or expanded aluminum crap.

My grandmother rolled with underglows on her 1990 firebird back in the early 90′s. It was quite the show stopper b/c it was so rare and expensive. It was the first time I felt what it’s like to ride in a modified car lol. I think the kit cost her around $800 installed. Today, these kits go for about $100 and can be installed easily, but the quality has dropped. Her kit used coaxial cable (like what comes out of the wall for your TV) and new kits use really cheap 14-16 gauge wiring. I’ve always been a fan of them, but we won’t see these going on the Subaru anytime soon. (They wouldn’t last one trip into the forest lol)
